U.L. listing 813447, California State Fire Marshal listing 3230.0981:104 and New York City 8SA/MEA listing 280-91-M apply to these dampers. 1. SMOKE DAMPER REQUIREMENTS Smoke dampers are required to close and prevent the passage of air and smoke through ducts or ventilation openings in smoke barriers. Smoke dampers are also applied In engineered smoke control systems to establish air pressure differentials and thereby prevent the spread of smoke. 2. LOCATION OF DAMPER IN DUCTWORK Place the damper assembly in its proper position relative to the barrier as shown in the figure to the right. The plane of the closed damper blades must be within 24 In. of the rated smoke baffler and before any duct Inlets or outlets, S. CLEARANCES REQUIRED BETWEEN FIRE DAMPER SLEEVES AND WALL/FLOOR OPENINGS Fire damper and sleeve assemblies expand during periods of intense heat. Therefore it is essential that openings in walls or floors be larger than the fire damper and sleeve assembly to allow for this expansion. Minimum clearances required between the outside of tire damper sleeve assemblies and wall/floor openings are: • Oalvsnited steel fire dampers and sleeves: n/? per foot of damper width and height with a minimum clearance of t/a". When an access door is incorporated as a part of sleeve, the sleeve may extend a maximum of 16" beyond the wall or floor opening on the access door side. 3. ATTACHING FIRE DAMPERS TO SLEEVES Fire dampers must be attached to sleeves as shown in Figure S. All four sides of the damper frame must be attached to the sleeve with one row of attachments on each side of the blade channel. Attachments must be spaced a maximum of 6" on centers and a maximum of 2" from corners, A minimum of 4 attachments (2 on each side of the blade channel) per side (16 per damper) are required. One of the methods of attachment shown below must be used. - tack or spot welds - #10 sheet metal screws - t /4" bolts and nuts - 3 /Ie" steel pop rivets 4. SECURING FIRE DAMPER AND SLEEVES TO WALL AND FLOOR OPENINGS. Fire damper and sleeve assemblies must be installed in wail and floor openings using retaining angles on each side of the wall or floor as described below: - Retaining angles must be a minimum of 16 gauge steel with minimum 1 x 11/2" legs. For dampers with height greater than 48 ", retaining angles must be v minimum of 16 gauge steal with minimum 1 x 2W' legs. - Retaining angles must be attached to tho sleeve using the procedures and methods described in Section 3. The angles must be attached to all 4 sides of the sleeve with butt joints at each comer. A minimum of two attachments we required on each side, top and bottom. The angles need not bo attached to each other at the corners. - Retaining angles must completely cover the clearance space between the sleeve and the wall /floor opening, plus overlap the wall /floor a minimum of 1". This coverage Includes all comers (see Figure 6). - Retaining angles should not bo fastened to tho wall /floor material. The angles should only sandwich the wall /floor and allow for damper /sleeve expansion during periods of intense heat. - For grille installation on fire dampers up through 36" x 36" maximum, angle legs may be reversed and one leg inserted into the wall /floor opening provided the required clearance is maintained between angle leg fasteners and the wall /floor opening. Retaining angles used in conjunction with grille installations must be a minimum of 16 gauge steel and have a minimum of s /e" x 1" legs (this is only applicable to 1' /z hour rated fire dampers; 3 hour fire dampers and dampers larger than 36" x 36" will require a minimum of 1'/2" x 1 1 /2" legs) (see Figure 4). S. CONNECTING DUCTS TO FIRE DAMPER SLEEVE Any duct connection other than breakaway is considered rigid. The connections shown on page 3 are considered breakaway. Factory furnished duct collars on type R and CR fire dampers are also considered breakaway (See Figure 3). 6. MULTIPLE SECTION FIRE DAMPERS When multiple sections are shipped unassembled, installer shall fasten dampers together as described in Section 3. Table 2 shows maximum sizes for multiple section dampers. Dampers over 48" tall must be factory assembled. 2 e' Max 0 0 NOTE: Attachments must not enter blade channel or they may cause Interference with blade closure, Narrow Line and Ultra Thin dampers do not have flange for attachments and must be welded to sleeve.
