UNPACKING The furnace is shipped in one package, completely assembled and wired. The thermostat is shipped in a separate carton when ordered. If any damage is found at time of delivery, proper notation should be made on the carrier's freight bill. Damage claims should be filed with the carrier at once. Claims of shortage should be filed with the manufacturer within five (5) days. Check the rating plate for correct model number, type of gas, and input. INSTALLATION This furnace should be installed in accordance with the American National Standard Z223.1 (latest edition) entitled "National Fuel Gas Code" (NFPA 54), in Canada, CAN /CGA 8149.1 and .2 "installation Codes for Gas Burning Appliances ", and the requirements or codes of the local utility or other authority having jurisdiction, including local plumbing or waste- water codes. GCJ models may be installed as downflow furnaces or as hori- zontal furnaces. GHJ models may be installed as upflow fur- naces or as horizontal furnaces. GUJ models may be installed only as upflow furnaces. When GCJ and GHJ models are installed horizontally, the in- staller must install a sheet metal screw to retain the upper door as shown in Figure 1. Do not install this furnace in a mobile home. Installation in a mobile home could cause fire. property damage and personal injury. All models are suitable for closet or utility room installation. The furnace shall be installed so that electrical components are pro- tected from water. This furnace is suitable for installation in buildings constructed on -site. This furnace should be located near the chimney and should be centralized with respect to the heat distribution sys- tem as much as practicable. When Installed in a utility room, the door of the room should be wide enough to allow the largest part of the furnace to enter, or to permit the replacement of another appliance, such as a water heater. A gas fired furnace for installation in a residential garage must be installed so that the burner(s) and the ignition source are located not less than 18 inches above the floor. The furnace is to be located or protected to avoid physical damage by vehicles. GCJ and GHJ models may be installed as suspended units in the horizontal position (burner and blower access panels must be in a vertical plane). These furnaces are not designed for direct at- tachment of suspension rods to the furnace casing. The suspending means must be field fabricated, and should consist of two "cradles" made by attaching two rods to a length of angle iron or suitable gauge steel. Locate the cradles so that they are as close as possible to the ends of the furnace (this will provide access for removal of major components such as the blower assembly). Provide enough clearance between the sus- pension rods and the furnace to allow removal of access panels. A CAUTION Do not use this furnace as a heater in a building under con- struction. GHJ AND GUJ SERIES, AND HORIZONTALLY INSTALLED GCJ: May be installed on wood flooring, but shall not be installed directly on carpeting, tile, or other combustible material other than wood flooring. GCJ SERIES INSTALLED AS A DOWNFLOW: May be installed on combustible flooring provided a special combustible floor base is used. Refer to the unit rating plate for the combustible floor base part number. A WARNING Combustible material must not be placed on or against the furnace jacket or within 6" of the vent pipe. The area around the furnace must be kept clear and free of all comic, bustible materials including gasoline and other ilammable vapors and liquids. The homeowner should be cautioned that the furnace area must not be used as a broom closet or for any other storage purposes. COMBUSTION & VENTILATION AIR Adequate provisions for combustion air, ventilation of furnace, and dilution of flue gases must be made. See "Air for Combustion and Ventilation" sections of the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI.Z223.1 (latest edition) or CAN /CGA -149 Canadian' Installation Codes (latest edition) or applicable provisions of the local building codes. When a furnace is installed in an unconfined space in a building, it can be assumed that infiltration will be sufficient to supply the required air. UNCONFINED SPACE An unconfined space is defined as "a space whose volume is more than 50 cubic feet per 1,000 BTU per hour of the com- bined input rating of all appliances installed in that space." If the furnace is installed in a ventilated attic or crawl space it is assumed that infiltration is sufficient to supply the required air. However, in a building of unusually tight construction, addition- al outdoor air should be provided. CONFINED SPACE A confined space is defined as "a space whose volume is less than 50 cubic feet per 1,000 BTU per hour of the combined input rating of all appliances installed in that space." A WARNING Combustion air openings in the front of the furnace must be kept free of obstructions. Any obstruction may cause improper burner operation and may result in a fire hazard or carbon monoxide injury. A CAUTION Do not store combustible materials near the furnace or warm air ducts. The material may ignite by spontaneous combustion creating a fire hazard. INSIDE AIR If the furnace is installed in a confined space and combustion air is taken from a heated space, the supply air and ventilating air must be through two (2) permanent openings of equal area. One opening shall be within 12 inches of the top of the ceiling and one opening within 12 inches of the floor. Each opening must have a minimum free area of 1 square inch per 1,000 BTU per hour of total input rating of all gas -fired equipment in the con- fined space. However, the use of Indoor air in most applications is acceptable if these guidelines are followed: 1. If the furnace is installed in a confined space, the neces sary combustion air must come from the outdoors by way of attic, crawl space, air duct, or direct opening. 2. If indoor combustion air is used, there must be no exposure to the substances listed in Item 5. 3. All provisions for indoor combustion air must meet the re- quirements for combustion air indicated.in the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1 (latest edition), and /or any ap- plicable local codes. IN CANADA: See CAN /CGA B149.1 & .2 "Installation Codes ". 4. Exposure to the following substances in the combustion air supply will also require OUTDOOR AIR for combustion: Permanent wave solutions Chlorinated waxes and cleaners Chlorine based swimming pool chemicals Water softening chemicals De -icing salts or chemicals Carbon tetrachloride Halogen -type refrigerants Cleaning solvents (such as perchloroethylene) Printing inks, paint removers, varnishes, etc. Hydrochloric acid Cements and glues Anti - static fabric softeners for clothes dryers Masonry acid washing materials Chlorinated laundry products VENTING GENERAL INFORMATION This furnace has a fan assisted combustion system designed for vertical venting into a suitable chimney or listed gas vent, and Is. classified as a Category I furnace as shipped from the factory. If this furnace is used to replace an existing furnace, it is possi- ble that the existing venting system is NOT suitable for venting this furnace. Furthermore, the existing venting system may have to be modified to properly vent any other gas appliance (e.g. a water heater) that remains connected to it. Carefully read the "Sidewall Venting ", "Vertical Venting ", and "Existing Vent Systems" sections that follow to determine proper venting prac- tices for your installation. Installation shall be in accordance with Part 7, "Venting of Equipment" of the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1 (latest edition) in USA or current standards of CAN/CGA-B149. 1 & .2 in Canada, local building codes, and these instructions. SIDEWALL VENTING: This furnace can be sidewall (horizontally) vented with a listed sidewall venter, such as Field Controls Model SWG -4HD with CK -43 Control Kit, or Tjernlund Model GPAK -JT. Category I ven- ting classification is maintained when vented in this manner. The furnace, power venter, and control kit (where applicable) must be installed in accordance with their installation instruc- tions and all applicable codes. For the two venters shown above, the following limitations also apply: Vent pipe diameter: 4 inches Minimum vent pipe length: 4 feet Maximum vent pipe length: 25 feet* Maximum number of 90- degree elbows: 4 `When fewer than four elbows are used, maximum vent pipe length can be increased by five feet per unused elbow. It is recommended a minimum of 26 gauge galvanized flue pipe be used. Use of single -wall vent pipe for the vent con- nector is permissible only in conditioned space. Use double - wall Type B vent pipe through unconditioned space such as attics and crawl spaces. The vent material used should be in accordance with the NFGC and local codes. The vent connector must have an upward slope toward the chimney on all horizontal runs of at least 1/4 inch for each 12 inches of horizontal run and should be supported by a sheet metal strap. The furnace shall be connected to a factory built chimney or vent complying with a recognized standard, or a masonry or concrete chimney lined with a lining material acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction. Using an unlined chimney or a single wall metal vent is prohibited in all cases. A lined chimney may be used If a drafthood equipped appli- ance (e.g. a water heater) is connected to the same flue. Extend the vent connector into the chimney so that it is flush with the inside of the flue liner. Seal the joint between the pipe and liner. 9. Masonry chimneys serving fireplaces cannot be used for venting purposes unless the fireplace opening is per- manently sealed. 10. A vent connector serving this appliance must not be con- . nected into any portion of mechanical draft systems oper- ating under positive pressure. 11. The vent pipe must not be connected to a chimney flue serving a solid flue appliance. 12. A manual damper, barometric draft regulator, or flue restric- tor must not be installed between the furnace and the chim- ney. 13. Where local experience indicates that condensate may be a problem, the vent shall be constructed to prevent condensation from entering the combustion blower. Provision shall be made to drain off the condensate. (See Figure 9) 14. All unused chimney openings should be closed. 15. All vent pipe run through unconditioned areas or outside shall be constructed of factory built chimney sections. (See Figure 9) 16. Multistory venting is allowed as permitted by the NFGC or local codes. 17. Install all vents in accordance with the vent manufacturer's instructions. For unlisted material, install in accordance with the NFGC. 18. Vent terminals must be installed in accordance with the vent terminals listing or in accordance with the NFGC or local codes. IN CANADA: See CAN /CP.4 B149.1 & .2 Installation Codes. EXISTING VENT SYSTEMS When an existing furnace is removed from a venting system serv- ing other appliances, the venting system is likely to be too large to properly vent the remaining attached appliances. An improperly sized venting system can result in spillage of flue products into the living space, the formation of condensate, leakage, etc. The following steps shall be followed with each appliance con- nected to the venting system placed in operation, while any other appliances connected to the venting system are not in operation: 1. Seal any unused openings in the venting system. 2. Inspect the venting system for proper size and horizontal pitch, as required in the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1 or the CAN /CGA B149 Installation Codes and these instructions. Determine that there is no blockage or restric- tions, leakage, corrosion or other deficiencies which could cause an unsafe condition. 3. In so far as is practical, close all building doors and win- dows and all doors between the space In which the ap- piiance(s) connected to the venting system is located and other spaces of the building. Turn on clothes dryers and any appliance not connected to the venting system. Turn on any exhaust fans (such as range hoods and bathroom exhausts) so they operate at maximum speed. Do not oper- ate a summer exhaust fan. Close fireplace dampers. 4. Follow the lighting instructions. Place the appliance being inspected in operation. Adjust the thermostat so the appli- ance shall operate continuously. 5. Test for draft hood equipped appliance spillage at the draft hood relief opening after 5 minutes of main burner opera- tion. After it has been determined that each appliance connected to the venting system properly vents when tested as out- lined on previous page, return doors, windows, exhaust fans, fireplace dampers, and any other gas burning appli- ance to their previous conditions of use. 7. If improper venting is observed during any of the above tests, the venting system must be corrected. See National Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1 (latest edition) to correct improper operation of common venting system (IN CANADA See CAN /CGA B149.1 & .2 Installation Codes). CIRCULATING AIR SUPPLY When the furnace is installed so that supply ducts carry air cir- culated by the furnace to areas outside the space containing the furnace, the return air shall be handled by a duct or ducts sealed to the furnace casing and terminated outside the space contain- ing the furnace. If there Is no complete return air duct system, the return air connection must be sealed to the furnace casing and run full size to a location outside the utility room or space housing the furnace to prevent a negative pressure on the ven- ting system. If the furnace is used in conjunction with a cooling unit, the fur- nace must be installed in parallel with, or on the upstream side of, the evaporator coil to avoid condensation of the heating ele- ment. In a parallel installation, dampers or other means must be provided to prevent chilled air from entering the furnace. If the air control is manually operated, an interlock must be provided to prevent operation of either unit unless the dampers are in full heat or full cool position. If a cooling coil is not installed with the furnace, then a remov- able access panel should be provided in the supply plenum for purposes of inspecting the heat exchanger. The opening is to be accessible when the furnace is installed, and is to be sized for viewing the heat exchanger for possible cracks that might devel- op during operation of the furnace. The covered opening shall be Teak- tight. UPFLOW INSTALLATIONS: GUJ and GHJ series can be installed as upflow with either a side or bottom air return. If side air return is desired on GHJ furnaces, kit No. AFILT524 can be used. Bottom filter kit No. AFILT529 can be used for either GHJ or GUJ models. A WARNING When side return is desired on GHJ series. the bottom return must be sealed with a piece of sheet metal large enough to cover the entire opening. Failure to connect a return air duct to the bottom or enclosing the bottom when side return is desired may result in combustion products being drawn into the circulating air stream For side return installation, a full size return air opening must be cut in the side panel. A starter hole and corner embossments are provided in each side (see Figure 11). To provide sufficient filter area for installations requiring more than 1600 CFM nominal air delivery, return air will have to be brought through both sides of the furnace, through one side and the bottom, or an optional filter rack may be used (see "Filters" section next page). HORIZONTAL INSTALLATIONS: Both GCJ and GHJ Series fur- naces can be installed for airflow right to left or left to right. These furnaces are to be installed so that the burner and blow- er access panels are in a vertical plane; they are NOT to be installed such that these panels are in a horizontal plane. See Figure 1. DOWNFLOW INSTALLATIONS: GCJ Series furnaces may be in- stalled directly on the supply plenum or coil cabinet if the fur- nace is installed on a non - combustible floor. For installations on combustible flooring, a special base must be ordered and used (refer to the furnace rating plate for the ap- propriate base model number.) Refer to Figure 10 and follow the instructions below: Cut a hole in the floor, sized to provide one inch clearance between all four sides of the duct and the edge of the floor- ing (refer to Figure 10.) The four angles on the base assem- bly should recess into the floor joistings and the base should rest on all four outside flanges. Construct duct con- nections with 1 - 1 -3/4 inch right angle flanges and long enough to extend below the floor joists. Drop the duct con- nections through the top of the base assembly with the right angle flanges in good contact with the glass tape on top of the base assembly. Carefully position the furnace over the right angle duct flanges. See Figure 10. A return air duct system is recommended. If the unit is installed in a confined space or closet, a return connection must be run, full size, to a location outside the closet. The air duct in the closet must be tight to prevent any entrance of air from the closet into the circulating air. The filter rack is to be installed between the return air duct and the side of the furnace. Refer to Figure 11 and the instructions below: 1. Using the starter hole and corner embossments as a guide, mark and cut a full size opening in the side panel(s). 2. Using the filter rack as a template, mark and drill four 7/64 diameter screw holes in the side panel(s). 3. With the filter access opening toward the front of the fur- nace, use sheet metal screws to fasten the rack(s) to the side panel(s). 4. Install the filter(s) in the rack(s), mesh side of filter towards furnace. GAS SUPPLY AND PIPING Refer to the furnace rating plate to make sure the furnace is equipped to burn the gas supplied (natural or propane). Any conversion of a natural gas unit to propane gas must be done by qualified personnel using a conversion kit available from the manufacturer, following the instructions in the conversion kit. NOTE: WHEN CONVERTING A LOW NOx UNIT (DESIGNATED BY AN "L" IN THE MODEL NUMBER, E.G. GHJ050D1OL) TO PROPANE, THE NOx INSERTS MUST BE REMOVED. AFTER REMOVING THE BURNERS, REMOVE THE SCREW HOLDING EACH INSERT, AND PULL THE INSERT FROM THE COMBUS- TION CHAMBER (REFER TO FIGURE 12). Provide a drip leg on the outside of the furnace. A manual shut -off valve shall be installed in the gas line, outside the unit, five (5) feet above the floor, or in accordance with any local codes. Immediately upstream of the shut -off valve a test gauge connection must be installed with a 1/8 inch NPT plugging tap. (Refer to Figure 12) The furnace must be isolated from the gas - supply piping sys- tem by closing the individual manual shut -off valve during any pressure testing of the gas - supply piping system at test pres- sure equal to or less than 1/2 PSIG or 14" W.C. If the piping sys- tem is to be tested at pressures in excess of 1/2 PSIG, the fur- nace and its individual shut -off valve must be disconnected from the gas - supply piping system. A WARNING The gas valve supplied with this furnace is rated at 1/2 PSIG maximum. Any higher pressure may rupture the pressure regulator diaphragm and may cause over - tiring of the burners and improper burner operation, The over - tiring may result in creation of carbon monoxide which may result in asphyxiation. After gas piping is complete, carefully check all piping connec- tions (factory and field) for gas Teaks. Use a leak detecting solu- tion or other preferred means. Connect a ground to the furnace before making line voltage con- nections. Refer to the furnace rating plate for electrical charac- teristics to be used in sizing field supply wiring and overcurrent protection. The line voltage power supply to the furnace should be a separate circuit with a properly sized fuse or circuit breaker. Make electri- cal connections as indicated on the furnace wiring diagram. A junction box on the furnace side panel is provided for line volt- age connections. Refer to the wiring diagram(s) included with these instructions for proper connections. NOTE: PROPER POLARITY OF THE SUPPLY CONNECTIONS ( "HOT" AND "NEUTRAL ") MUST BE OBSERVED TO ENSURE THAT SAFETY CONTROLS PROVIDE THE PROTECTION INTENDED. THERMOSTAT INSTALLATION Install a room thermostat according to the instructions fur- nished with it. Select a location on an inside wall and not sub- ject to drafts, direct sunshine, or other heat sources. The initial heat anticipator setting should be equal to the total current draw of the control circuit. Low voltage thermostat connections are to be made to the blower control board as indicated on the wiring diagrams. CONTINUOUS LOW SPEED BLOWER If continuous blower operation on low speed is desired, connect the low speed motor tap to the "CONT" terminal on the blower control board (refer to furnace wiring diagram). The blower will operate on low speed whenever main power is connected to the furnace, except when it operates on heating or cooling speed • during thermostat call for heat or cooling. This constant air ter- minal is intended for low speed only. If a motor was wired for a higher speed, the increased amp draw could cause the board control to fall and void the warranty. ACCESSORY CONNECTIONS HUMIDIFIER Terminals are provided on the blower control board for connec- tion of a 115 volt humidifier. The "HUM" terminal Is energized whenever the thermostat Is calling for heat. Refer to the furnace wiring diagram for specific connection information. ELECTRONIC AIR CLEANER Terminals are provided on the blower control board for connec- tion of a 115 volt electronic air cleaner. The "EAC" terminal is energized whenever the thermostat is calling for heat or cooling. Refer to the furnace wiring diagram for specific connection information. If electronic air cleaning is desired with a continuous low speed blower, the hot side of the electronic air cleaner will have to be wired to the 120 volt supply side of the blower control board. When continuous low speed is disconnected, the electronic air cleaner will have to be disconnected from the 120 volts supply side and placed on the EAC terminal. (See Figures 15 and 16). TWINNING The blower control board is designed to permit "twinning" of furnaces (two furnaces connected to a common supply and return air system, and controlled by one thermostat). An acces- sory kit, Part No. ATWIN526, must be ordered from the manu- facturer. Specific wiring and operating instructions are included with the kit. This appliance Is equipped with an ignition device which auto- matically lights the pilot. Do not try to Tight the pilot by hand. BEFORE OPERATING smell all around the appliance area for gas. Be sure to smell next to the floor because some gas is heavier than air and will settle on the floor. WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS • Do not try to light any appliance. • Do not touch any electric switch; do not use any phone in your building. • Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor's phone. Follow the gas supplier's instructions. • If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire depart- ment. Use only your hand to move the gas control switch. Never use tools. If the switch will not move by hand, don't try to repair it. Call a qualified service technician. Force or attempted repair may result In a fire or explosion. Do not use this appliance if any part has been under water. Immediately call a qualified service technician to inspect the appliance and to replace any part of the control system and any gas control which has been under water. IMPORTANT: Refer to the Lighting Instruction label on the fur- nace for instructions on operating the specific controls used on your unit. TO START FURNACE: 1. Move the gas control switch to the "On" position. 4. Replace the control access door. 5. Turn on the electrical power. 6. Set the room thermostat to a point above room temperature to light the main burners. After the burners are lighted, set the room thermostat to desired temperature. TO SHUT DOWN FURNACE 1. Set the room thermostat to the lowest setting. 2. Shut off the gas to the main burners and pilot by moving the switch to the "Off" position on the gas control. A WARNING Should overheating occur or the gas supply fail to shut oil, shut off the manual gas valve to the appliance before shut- ting off the electrical supply. SEQUENCE OF OPERATION HEATING A call for heat from the thermostat closes R to W on the blow- er control board, and the combustion blower is energized. The pressure switch senses normal combustion air flow, and clos- es. Power is then applied to the ignition control, which ener- gizes the pilot gas solenoid In the gas valve and the pilot ignit- er. Pilot ignition occurs, is sensed by the flame sensor, and the main gas valve is energized (pilot igniter is de- energized). Main burner ignition occurs. Energization of the main valve starts the "blower on" timing for the circulating blower. Approximately 30 seconds later (not ad- justable), the heating speed of the blower is energized. When the call for heat is satisfied, R to W is opened, and the burners and combustion blower are de- energized. This starts the "blower off" timing for the circulating blower. After the selected (adjustable) time period elapses, the blower is de -ener- gized. In the event the limit control senses an abnormally high tem- perature and opens, the ignition control is de- energized and the combustion blower and circulating blower heating speed con- tinue to be energized. . COOLING A call for cooling from the thermostat closes R to G and Y on the blower control board and after a short delay energizes cool- ing speed on the circulating blower. When the call for cooling is satisfied the blower is de- energized. CONTROLS Following is a description of the operation of some of the con- trols used in this furnace. All models use one of each control, except as noted. PRESSURE SWITCH The pressure switch is a normally open switch that monitors combustion air flow. Inadequate air flow resulting from exces- sive venting system restriction or a failed combustion blower will cause this switch to remain open. ROLLOUT SWITCH The rollout switch is a normally closed switch that opens when abnormal temperatures exist in the burner area. This can be caused by a restricted heat exchanger causing main burner flame to "roll out" into the vestibule area. This switch must be manually reset by pushing the button on top to restore furnace operation. GCJ and GHJ models incorporate 2 rollout switches. LIMIT CONTROL This is a normally closed control that opens if abnormally high circulating air temperatures occur. It is an automatic reset control. AUXILIARY LIMIT CONTROL This is a normally closed control that opens under abnormal "reverse air flow" conditions that could occur in a downflow or horizontal installation if the circulating blower fails. It is an auto- matic reset control. GUJ models do not include an auxiliary limit control. INTERLOCK (BLOWER DOOR) SWITCH When the blower door is removed, the interlock switch breaks the power supply to the burner controls and blower motor. The switch operation must be checked. BLOWER CONTROL BOARD This controls operation of the circulating air blower, the combustion blower, and any accessories connected to it. It is factory set to provide a 120 second "blower off" delay on heat- ing. This delay is adjustable (refer to Figure 13). To change motor speed, refer to Figure 13 and use the follow- ing procedure, t r MN 1 2 39 '3c CENTER 1. Turn off electrical power to the unit. 2. Refer to the wiring diagram and connect the desired speed tap for cooling and heating on the blower control board. Re- maining speed taps must be connected to dummy terminals. (M1, M2) If you want to use the same speed tap for both heating and cooling, install a piggyback terminal on the speed tap using a short jumper. Wire 1 /4" quick connect ter- minals on both ends to jumper the HEAT and COOL speed on the blower control board. Gas input must never exceed the value shown on the furnace rating plate. The furnace is equipped for rated Input at a mani- fold pressure of 3.5 inches W.C. for natural gas, 10.0 inches W.C. for propane gas. The manifold pressure can be measured by removing the plug in the downstream side of the gas valve and connecting a water manometer or gauge. Only small variations in gas input may be made by adjusting the regulator. In no case should the final manifold pressure vary more than 0.3" W.C. from the above specified pressures. To adjust the regulator, turn the adjusting screw on the regula- tor clockwise to increase pressure and input; counterclockwise to decrease pressure and input. Check the furnace rate by observing the gas meter, when avail- able, making sure all other gas appliances are turned off. The test hand on the meter should be timed for at least one revolu- tion. Note the number of seconds for one revolution. BTU /HR. = Cubic Feet Per Revolution x 3600 x Heating Value INPUT No. Seconds Per Revolution The heating value of your gas can be obtained from your local utility or gas supplier. HIGH ALTITUDE In both the USA and Canada this furnace is approved for oper- ation at altitudes from 0 to 4500 feet above sea level without any required modifications. Above 4500 feet only the gas man- ifold pressure needs to be adjusted according to the information shown in Table 3. To adjust the manifold pressure refer to the previous section on "Checking and Adjusting the Gas Input Rate." For installations above 7500 feet consult Technical Service at 1- 800 - 446 -5872 for assistance. Clean the motor periodically to prevent the possibility of overheating due to an accumulation of dust and dirt on the windings or on the motor exterior. And, as suggested elsewhere in these instruc- tions, the air filters should be kept clean because dirty filters can restrict airflow and the motor depends upon sufficient air flow- ing across and through it to keep from overheating. MAIN BURNERS Light burners and allow to operate for a few minutes to estab- lish normal burning conditions. Check the burner flame by observation. Flame should be predominantly blue in color, strong in appearance. Check that all burners are lit, and that the flame does not impinge on the sides of the heat exchanger. Distorted flame or yellow tipping of the natural gas main burn- er flame, or long yellow tips on propane, may be caused by lint accumulation or dirt inside the burner or burner ports, lint at the air inlet between the burner and manifold pipe, or obstruction over the main burner orifice. Use a soft brush or vacuum affect- ed areas. PILOT BURNER (See Figure 14) The pilot flame must surround the end of the flame sensor and ground strap for proper operation of the pilot safety circuit.
