HOSE ASSEMBLIES In a typical underground exhaust installation, the stack is the vertical duct that rises above the floor to the fan blower. The main air duct runs underground from the stack to the branch air duct or to multiple branch air ducts to which all of the exhaust, floor and saddle assemblies are attached. Up to about 70' of 10" air duct starting at a point furthest from the blower can be used before need for increasing to 12 ". This duct can be PVC or other ducting as accepted by Code, but they should be incased in con- crete as shown on Installation Drawing. PVC pipe is being widely used for ducting where Code does not disallow. A solvent is used at bell joint (each 10' length has one bell end) to provide leak proof connection. This ducting is ideal because it is strong, light in weight, and easy to cut. It also provides a smooth inside joint where coupled. It is suggested that all of the branch an main air ducts be installed before any saddle assembly openings are made in the duct. All ducting should be installed so the coupling joints do not fall where the saddle assembly is to be located. The duct should be properly aligned where it is coupled so that the inside bottom of the duct is smooth at joint. In the event a high water table exists and would create a problem of water getting into the exhaust system duct, it is sug- gested that the duct be pitched to a low point and a drain be in- stalled from the duct to a sump. The average location that has reasonably good drainage from the soil in which the duct is buried does not require a drain. The small amount of water that normally accumulates in the underground duct from washing floors or from condensation of automobile exhaust is dissipated and dries up from the natural air movement of the system. ASSEMBLIES: The floor assembly is the unit incorporating the cover with an internal storage space for the tail pipe adpater and is set to proper floor pitch with the four screws near the bottom of the unit. RECEIVti■ CITY OF 7 " VEHICLE EXHAUST SYSTEMS FOR SERVICE STATIONS AND GARAGES DEC 2 n 1c{'- PERMIT CEO + • c " The saddle assembly is the unit consisting of the 4" I.D. steel tube onto which is fixed the curved saddle used to fasten the complete assembly to the air duct. At the top end of the 4" tube is the rectangular guide plate that fits into the bottom of the floor assembly. The hose assembly is composed of a tail pipe adapter, 3" flexible hose and hose guard. BRANCH AIR DUCTS: The branch air duct should be installed so that the minimum vertical measurement from the finished floor grade to top of air duct is approximately 12 -1/2" and the maximum is approx- imately 16 -1/2 ". Thus allowing a total of 4" vertical adjustment. SADDLE ASSEMBLY: The saddle assembly must be installed so that the lower end of the 4" tube is pointed into the direction of the air flow going to the blower fan. Assemblies should be encased in con- crete for permanency. IMPORTANT: It must be remembered that due to the angle construction, the center line for the saddle assembly hole to be made in the air duct must be located approximately 14" from the desired center line of the floor assembly, in the direction of the air flow. In other words, the center line of the floor assembly is offset 14" from the center line of the opening of the air duct. Fundamentally, the measurement from the desired center line of the floor assembly to•the center line of the saddle assembly opening in the air duct is the same as the vertical measurement from the finished floor grade to the top of the air duct. To make opening in the PVC air ductfor the saddle assembly, determine the center line of the required hole (remembering the 14" offset) then position the template, furnished with shipment, on top center of duct and inscribe hole to be made. Remove template an cut hole on inscribed line. Then mount the saddle on the duct and drill 1/8" holes into the duct through the (4) 3/16" holes provided in the saddle. Use sheet metal screws (not furnished) to fix the saddle to the duct. FLOOR FIXTUR TO SADDLE ASSEMBLY: After the saddle assembly is firmly fixed, and previous to back filling, it is suggested that the floor assembly be installed to prevent dirt form entering the air duct. Permanent alignment of floor assembly to finished floor grade is best done just before pouring cement. When pouring the cement, the floor assembly should be incased in concrete as shown on the sheet having a crossectional view of the installation.
