Reference: Fire Department Review Control letter, regarding H.V.A.C. at
Boeing #9 -51, 9407 E. Marginal Way S
Upon further review of the 1994 Uniform Mechanical Code, Boeing requests that
the automatic shutoff installation be waived per Section 608 - exception: 2. It was
found that the occupied room is served exclusively by the replacement air handling
units, The room has direct exits to the exterior of the building and the travel distance
is less than 100 feet. I conveyed this information to Mr. Al Metzler of the Tukwila
Fire Prevention Bureau in a phone conversation on March 20, 1997. Mr. Metzler
agreed that the simplest form to invoke this exception to permit M97 -0030 was
through the Tukwila Revision process.

607 - 609.1.1 1994 UNIFORM MECHANICAL CODE
9. Exterior walls and interior stud partitions shall be fire blocked at the floor.
10. Each wall register shall be connected to the air chamber by a register box or boot.
11. A duct conforming with Section 601.1 shall extend from the furnace supply outlet at least 6
inches (152 mm) below combustible framing.
12. The entire ground surface of the under -floor space shall be covered with a vapor barrier hav-
ing a minimum thickness of 4 mils (0.1 mm) and a flame - spread rating of 200 or Tess.
13. Fuel -gas lines and plumbing waste cleanouts are not located within the space.
SECTION 608 — SHUTOFF FOR SMOKE CONTROL
Air- moving systems supplying air in excess of 2,000 cubic feet per minute (940 L /s) to enclosed
spaces within buildings shall be equipped with an automatic shutoff. Automatic shutoff shall be
accomplished by interrupting the power source of the air - moving equipment upon detection of
smoke in the main supply -air duct served by such equipment. Smoke detectors shall be labeled by
an approved agency for air -duct installation and shall be installed in accordance with the manufac-
turer's installation instructions. Such devices shall be compatible with the operating velocities,
pressures, temperatures and humidities of the system. Where fire detection or alarm systems are
provided for the building, the smoke detectors required by this section shall be supervised by such
systems.
EXCEPTIONS: I. When the space supplied by the air - moving equipment is served by a total coverage
smoke - detection system complying with U.F.C. Standard 14 -2, interconnection to such system may be used

3. Automatic shutoff is not required for Group R, Division 3 and Group U Occupancies.
4. Automatic shutoff is not required for approved smoke - control systems or where analysis demonstrates

ired portions of Group I I Occupancies. Such equipment shall be required to have smoke detection with remote
indication and manual shutoff capability at an approved location.
SECTION 609 -- PRODUCT-CONVEYING DUCT SYSTEMS
609.1 Materials. Materials used in product - conveying duct systems shall be suitable for the in-
tended use and shall be of metal.
EXCEPTIONS: I. Asbestos - cement, concrete, clay or ceramic materials may be used when it is shown
that these materials will be equivalent to metal ducts installed in accordance with this chapter.
2. Ducts serving a Class 5 system may be constructed of approved nonmetallic material when the corrosive
characteristics of the material being conveyed make a metal system unsuitable and when the mixture being
conveyed is nonflammable.
Approved nonmetallic material shall be either a listed product having a flame- spread index of 25 or less
and a smoke - developed rating of 50 or Tess on both inside and outside surfaces without evidence of continued
progressive combustion, or shall have a flume- spread index of 25 or Icss and shall be installed with an automat-
ic fire- sprinkler protection system inside the duct.
3. Ducts used in central vacuum- cleaning systems within a dwelling unit may be of PVC pipe. Penetrations
of fire walls, floor- ceiling or roof - ceiling assemblies shall comply with Sections 709 and 710 of the Building
Code. Copper or ferrous pipes or conduits extending from within the separation between a garage and dwelling
unit to the central vacuuming unit may be used.
609.1.1 Aluminum. Aluminum ducts shall not be used in systems conveying flammable va-
pors, fumes or explosive dusts nor in Class 2, 3 or 4 systems. Galvanized steel and aluminum
ducts shall not he used when the temperature of the material being conveyed exceeds 400 °F.
(204°C.).

The attached set of building plans have been reviewed by
The Fire Prevention Bureau and are acceptable with the
following concerns:
1. H.V.A.C. units rated at greater than 2,000 cfm require
auto - shutdown devices. These devices shall be separately
zoned in the alarm panel and local U.L. central station
supervision is required'. (City Ordinance #1742)
H.V.A.C. systems supplying air in excess of 2,000
cubic feet per minute to enclosed spaces within
buildings shall be equipped with an automatic shutoff.
Automatic shutoff shall be accomplished by
interrupting the power source of the air - moving
equipment upon detection of smoke in the main
supply -air duct served by such equipment. Smoke

location to provide notification of fire at that location.

door to the room shall have a sign with one -inch letters
which reads "Fire Alarm" or "Fire Alarm Control ". (City

be equipped with a mechanical lockout device. (NFPA
72 (1- 5.2.8.2))
5. All new fire alarm systems or modifications to
existing systems shall have the written approval of The
Tukwila Fire Prevention Bureau. No work shall commence
until a fire department permit has been obtained. (City

Contact The Tukwila Fire Prevention Bureau to witness all
required inspections and tests. (UFC 10.503) (City

In reviewing our current permit files, it appears that your permit for a gas furnace replacement
issued on March 18, 1997 has not received a final inspection as of the date of this letter by the
City of Tukwila Building Division.
Per the Uniform Building Code and/or Uniform Mechanical Code, every permit issued by the
building official under the provision of this code shall expire by limitation and become null and
void if the building or work authorized by such permit is not commenced within 180 days from
the date of such pertnit, or if the building or work authorized by such permit is suspended or
abandoned at any time after the work is commenced for a period of 180 days.
Based on the above, if a final inspection is not called for within ten (10) business days from the
date of this letter, the Permit Center will close your file and the work completed to date will be
considered non - complying and not in conformance with the Uniform Building Code and /or
Mechanical Code.
