THE CHIMNEY .SPECIALIST PAGE 02 02/21/89 13:19 1 296 862 2939 Hotter on the Inside, Cooler on the Outside! 4 THE CHIMNEY SPECIALIST PAGE 03 The Excel 103HT Choy Length The Foundation of a Revolutionary Choy System In general terns, there 'are two basic types of chimney available today— insulated and air. cooled. Like mast things, each type has advantages and disadvantages. Many experts prefer insulated chimneys because they keep the flue asses much hotter, than air cooled chmneys. This reduces creosote formation and reduces this probability of a chimney fire. Other people argue that air cooled chimneys are safer becarise they are outlet of the outside. Excel 1031-IT chimney lengths combine the best features of bogs air-cooled and insulated chimneys. A cross section of an Excel 103HT length reveals Y4" of high density "Theruwplue Insulation. With it's high R value and high density, W of "Thews" keeps Excel 103HT as hot on the inside as any 1" insulated chimney listed to UL 103HT cross section also reveals A" of open air space. This air space, in combination with the "Thetmoplus` ittaslatitni, allows Excel 103HT to have outside skin temperatures equivalent to air. pooled designs. There are no couplings on the ends of Excel 103HT By eliminating the coupling, we eliminated the thermal badge between the flue and the casing. With Excel 103HT, the insulation and air space run contdnuously from section to seek,:,. Az a result, there Ire no hot spots with Excel 103HT. Excel 103HT chimney lengths are identical to Excel 2100 chimney lengths. Excel 2100 is the first 1" wall chimney to pass the Canadian ULC 5629 standard. The ULC 5629 standard is much more severe than the UL 103HT standard and is generally regarded as the toughest residential chimney standard in the world. For the first time, consumers in the United States have the opportunity to install a chimney specifically designed fur and tested to the most severe standard In the world. 0 0 02/21/09 10:10 1 206 862 29.30 . • T • t .. 1 )ICI.F. ,':.,y ' Ir7< iii:! 11,0 14iilL t.t . If you have ever seen an insulated chimney fare buckled by a chimney fire, you probably remember that it was buckled inwards at the lock seam. The reason is simple: there are fnur thicknesses of material at that point, and it is much more rigid than the rest of the flue because the lock is made by compressing these fartr thicknesses as flat as possible. Under chimney-fire conditions, there is no way for the chimney to expand uniformly— so it warps at the seam. With the continuous weld on Excel 103HT, there are only two thicknesses of material, and only 1 /4" of overlap, This allows the flue ou expand and contract uniformly around Its circumference, The continuous meld on Excel 103HT is totally watertight, eliminating a potential source of chimney corrosion, And there la much morel Fabricating n continuous weld is slower and requires much more expensive machinery than fabticating a lock seam, A quick check of many of our competitor's catalogues will show what they think of continuous welding— they continuous weld their more sophisticated and higher priced industrial chimneys, but use a lock seam an their residential products, "Thermepl s"— Clase to Perfection! Unlike the silica based loose fill Insulation used by most Insulated chimney tnanufacturers, Thermoplus is chloride free and totally noncorrosive. Chlorides in the insulation are the number one cause of corrosion related failure in insulated chimneys. You won't have that problem with Thermoplus. Even chlorides won't do any harm without the presence of moisture. Thernoplus does not retain or absorb moisture. Most louse fill insulations become hard after a few years. you have a chimney fire you want your insulation to be soft su that when the flue expands, it has some room to move. Thermoplus stays soft, even after repeated chimney fires, even after years so the flue will be able to expand without buckling. There are no hot spots with Excel 103HT because Thermoplus will not settle. evert after repeated chimney fires. "Smart Parts"-- - For Multiple Applications & Sizes One of the advantages of developing a new product is the opportunity to evaluate all existing products. We talked to the people who handle chimney daily. Experienced installers have distinct likes and dislikes about chimney components. We evaluated THE CHIMI•NEY SPECIALIST PAGE 04 Engineering and Dodo the individual parts which were consistently the most popular— regardless of brand — selected the best tiiesigna, and Improved them. Whenever p ssihle, we designed one part to fit 6, 7, & 8 inch sizes and to Fuit multiple applirntions. The result— "Smart Parts ", the easiest to Install, easiest to inventory chimney components available. A Few Examples^ - 8 m11ler Suppottat Our 6" chimney requires a l0" hole in the ceiling when used with nut round or square sum,re Most other brands require a 14" hole. Since roof rotate* and flo or joists rarely line up with the deaired chimney location, a smaller support almost always makes the installation easier. With today's engineered framing and truss joint designs. it is often impossible to modify frvming cos• site. There are many installatkms possible with Excel 103HT that are impossible with other chimney systems. Adduatable Lecithin Excel 103HT is the first insulated chimney to offer adjustable lengths. Adjustable lengths relieve many installation headaches by allowing unlimited centre •to•ccnt ur(S : ts, easy balancing of Cap heights, and painless overall length adjustment, Adjustable Will $uppoeta and Dwain Excel 103HT wall auppurte and wall bands adjust to allow for variatlotut in wall finish, virtually eliminating bracing and blocking, The Excel 1031-iT wall support installs above the insulated tee. This usually allows it to be screwed to the flaming instead of anchored into concrete. Excel roof sunsuits, wall supports, wall band offset supports, and roof hracca adjust to fit 6•, 7•, and 8 -inch chimney. 5 '• '1Correakon A e • Much of the data on the long term durability . of chimneys, and particularly on chimney ooterisbn, has been obtained in the last five • years, The news has not been good for most chimney manufacturers. Galvanised exterior • chimneys have not stood up well to acid rain or coastal environments. Manufacturers who use loose fill insulation have discovered a new . ; F enemy -- chlorides. Trace amounts of d>{o rides are present in the silica used by most insulated chimney mastufactuters. Chlorides, when exposed to atmospheric moisture, can cause a stainless steel chimney to corrode so quickly that is not unusual to find pinholes insane brands of chimney while they am still in the factory carton. 92/21 /8 13:10 • 1 206 862 2980 THE CHIMNEY SPECIALIST &eel is contracted of highly corrosion resis- tant ataielesa steel. A chimney with a stain- less steel outer suing will resist add rale and salt air cotroilnn far better than a chimney with a galvanized cuing. Excel is insulated with Thermoplus blanket Insulation. There are no chlorides or other corrosive chemicals in Thermoplus. This totally eliminates the primary cause of premature chimney corrosion. Corrosion requires the presence of moisture. Excel's unique continuous welded seam is gas - and liquid - tight, no moisture can enter the chimney through the seam. Excel's joint is designed to shed rain. reducing the possibility of capillary moisture flow into the insulation. it is built without couplings. This allows moisture to drain out of the system instead of being retained in the joints. Thermoplus is totally nun - absorbent. It will not retain moisture at all. ',any moisture could get into the insulation, it would simply evaporate out the cop, or drain out the bottom. Since Excel 103HT has a stainless steel interior and eateriom that is no possibility of corro$1011 between dissimilar metals. The higher the elevation, the greater the chimney height required to provide the same draft as an installation at sea level, The more complex the chimney layout is (the more tees, elbows, etc. in the system), the greater the chimney height required to provide the same draft as a straight up system. The minimum overall height of any chimney system is 12 feet for a vertical chimney with no offsets at sea level, You must increase the vertical height of the system to compensate for horizontal runs, tees, and elbows. To compensate for: One Toe Add 3 ft. to the minimum height. One 45°Elbow Add 1 ft. to the minimum height. One 90•Elbow Add 2 ft. to the minimum height. Each foot of horizontal run Add 2 ft. to the minimum height. Each 1000 ft, above sea level Add 4% to the minimum height. Example 11 House Built at Sea Level A wood burning stove is installed on the main floor of a single story house at sea level. The chimney is installed with a 90° elbow through the wall into a tee, then straight up through the nxoE To determine the minimum overall height add: The minimum overall height = 12 feet 11/2 feet of horizontal run = One 'Tee" _ One 90° Elbow m Additional Height = 3 feet 3 feet 2 feet 8 feet The minimum overall chimney height required is 12 ft, i- 8 ft, = 20 ft. Example Stt Identical House built at 8,000 Feet To determine the minimum overall height, add 31% (4% per 1000 feet) to the height calculated in the above example: 20 feet + 32% = 26.4 feet If the house was built at an altitiude of 5000 feet, the overall height would be: 20 feet + 20% (4% per 1000ft.) = 24 feet t Minimum Recommended Flue Height nue connection from the ction on the appliance (feet) .Elevation Ab(we8es LSvei (feet) of elbows 7- 2X 0 15' 2X 30' 2X 45' 4X 18' 4X 30' 4X 45' . . 0 -1000 12 13 15 16 14 18 20 18 20 1000 -2000 12.5 13.5 15.5 16.5 14.5 19 20.5 19 21 2000 -3000 13 14 16 17 15 19.5 21.5 19.6 21.5 3000.4000 13.5 14.5 17 18 15.5 20 22.5 20 22.5 4000-5000 14 15 17.5 18.5 16 21 23 21 23 5000-6000 14,6 15.5 18 19 17 21.5 24 21,5 24 :6000.7000 15 16 18.5 20 17.5 22,5 25 22.5 25 7000-8000 15.5 16.5 19 20.5 18 23 25.5 r 23 25.5 8000-9000 18 17 20 21 18.5 24 28.5 24 26.5 0000-10000 _ 17.6 _ 20.5 22 19 24.5 27 24.5 27 .4 No more than two offsets (four elbows) allowed 1.
