Dear Mr. Ware,
At your request, I visited the above referenced site on
Wednesday, April 27, 1997, to review the roof framing for
additional loads to be added due to replacement of the existing
roof top mechanical units. The existing mechanical heating and
cooling units will be replaced with newer units on buildings
numbered 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.
The Southoenter Corporate Square contains 12 separate
buildings constructed similarly. As you explained, buildings
numbered 1 through 4 were constructed early in 1980, with the
remaining building built during the following 4 year interval. The
architectural plans and structural plans that you have supplied for
our use were drawn at two different time periods. The architectural
drawings were drawn for the first set of buildings. and the
structural drawings were drawn for the latter set of buildings. The
structural roof framing plan indicates a Berkeley roof framing
system with 5 -1 /8 "x 25 -1/2" glu -lams at 16' on center (oc), with
4x14 doug -fir purlins at 8 foot on center and 2x4 doug -fir
subpurlins at 16" on center at the roof top units. The framing
changes at one corner of the buildings where bearing walls are
used in lieu of the glu -lam beams. At this area 2x10's at 12" on
center are used to frame the roof and provide support for the roof
top units. The roof top units are located so that part of it is
supported on the 2x10's and part is supported on the purlins.

CITY OF TUKWILA

T recorded the beam sizes and spacings for Buildings numbered
5 and 6. Buildings 7, 8, and 9 appear to have similar layouts for.
the framing and roof top unit orientation. At buildings,5 and 6,
i removed additional ceiling tile and pulled back the insulation to
expose the existing framing below the roof top units. The existing
framing appears to differ from the plans in the spacing . of the
purlins. The purlin spacing varies from approximately 2' -6" to 5'-
0" on center instead of the 8 foot on center • cal led out on the
structural drawings. The 2x10s were not visible due to the
insulation at the roof and wall framing extending to ' the roof •
sheathing.
Although the purlin spacing and roof top unit locations vary
from building to building, the loading and support condition are
being considered similarly for the analysis. Generally,. there are
(3) - 4x14 purlins, (2) 4x12 purlins, and 2x10 @'12 oc (assumed
per plan call out) providing support for the'.new roof top unit
loads. A review of the structural notes indicates that the framing
lumber called out is Douglas Fir - Larch No. ]..'Based on the above
framing condition, the purlins'have been reviewed for structural
adequacy.
It is our opinion that the new roof top units can be installed
"with out providing additional framing at these areas:.
If you have any additional questions, please call.
Sincerely yours,
Richard Hudson and Associates

The purpose of this marketing guide Is to provide a reference to the capacity and
efficiencies of large rooftop products from 27 1/2.60 tons. The ratings are
determined at ARI 360 conditions.
Definition of Terms:
MBh •- 1000 BTU per hour or 1000 BTUH.
EER •• Energy efficiency ratio. A ratio calculated by dividing the net cooling
capacity in MBh by the total power input in kw at any given set of rating conditions
expressed in BTUH per watt.
System Kw -- All power going to unit. (Compressors, fans, motors, controls.)
IPLV •• Integrated part load value, A single number part load efficiency figure of
merit calculated.
API 360 •- A standard established for testing, rating, specification and performance
requirements.

1. For units that have a heating section, deduct 0.2 from all required EER's and IPLV's.
2. For multi - capacity equipment the minimum performance shall apply to each sup provided Multi-
capacity refers to manufacturer published rating for more than one capacity mode allowed by the
product's controls.
3. Capacity (Cap) means the rated cooling capacity of the product in Btu/h in acconianae with the cited
ARI standard. If the unit's capacity is less than 7.000 Btu/h, use 7,000 bu lh in the calculation. If the
unit's capacity is greater than 15,000 Btu/h, use 15,000 Btu/h in the calculation.
f. These values apply to non - NAECA equipment. See referenced standard for definition of Thermal
efficiency (Et), (100% - flue losses).
To be consistent with National Appliance Energy Conservation Act ( NAECA) of 1987 (Public Law 100
12). These values apply to furnace and combination units covered by NAECA.
