C206) 682 -2139 Subject : Revisions to Structural framing to clear sprinkler at the Air Condition Equipment (ACE) Support on hoof. 16711 West Valley Highway, Tukwila, Washington. As per your request and authorization we have inspected the installation of the structural framing for ACE support at 16711 West Valley Highway in. Tukwila. We have found that the 2x8 joists which support the ACE on the east end need to be notched to clear a sprinkler head on the north end and a conduit on the south end. Especially the notch required at the sprinkler head significantly undermines the capacity of the 2x8 joists that are there at present. We are therefore recomtnending adding 2 -2x6 joists on the east side of the 2x8's and bolting together the new 2x6's with the existing 2x8's. The attached sketches show a Section Y showing the notches and bolt spacing for seven bolts required to make the connection. Section Z shows the bolting of 2 -2x6's with 2- 2x8's. The bolts shall conform to ASTM A307 specifications and shall be one half inch in diameter and shall be installed with a corresponding nut and washers. The 2x6 joists shall be of Douglas Fir -Larch Select with values of Fb Q 1450 psi and Fv = 95 pal. Should you have any questions please give me a call. Sincerely, GM. As per your request and authorization we have completed our structural review of the existing roof framing of the building at 16711 West Valley Highway in Tukwila to determine the adequacy of the existing roof framing or to design structural strengthening to support a new air conditioning equipment to be installed on the roof. We summarize our findings and conclusions as follows : We find the existing roof framing less than adequate to support the load that it is supposed to have been designed for according to the plans. The existing 2 x 4 joists spanning 8 Ft. are less than adequate to support the 25 psf. design snow load shown on the plans and is also required by code in this Puget Sound region, It definitely needs to be upgraded to code standards. We therefore find the existing framing unsuited to support the additional air conditioning unit without a structural strengthening design. 2. Our structural strengthening of the roof framing for the support of the new air conditioning equipment is shown in the sketches that are attached herewith. For the equipment weight we used 1003 pounds as was given to us by Ms. Laura Nichols. Our design basically introduces 2 x 6 members to be installed under the existing 2 x 4 members to support the additional load and transfer it to the 4 x 12 beams, The design calls for single 2 x 6 joists in the east/west direction and double 2 x 6 joists spanning 8 Ft. in the north/south direction between the existing 4 x 12 beams. All the new timber shall be of Douglas Fir -Larch Select with values of Fb 1450 psi and Fv = 95 psi.
