An approved automatic fire - extinguishing system is required for this project. Commercial -type food heat - processing equipment from which grease -laden vapors emanate in normal cooking application shall be protected by an approved automatic extinguishing system. The extinguisher system shall be interconnected to the fuel and current supply so that the fuel or current is automatically shut off to all equipment under the hood, when the system is actuated. (UFC 1006) All new automatic fire - extinguishing systems and all modifications to existing automatic fire- extinguishing systems shall have fire department review and approval of drawings prior to installation or modification. 2. All new sprinkler systems and all modifications to existing sprinkler systems shall have fire department review and approval of drawings prior to installation or modification. Staff review of your June 17, 1996 proposal and other acquired information regarding this building has determined our department would .not approved the omission of the 2 -Hour shaft enclosure. This determination is primarily due to a lack of 2 -Hour occupancy separations between the existing kitchen /cafeteria and other floors or adjoining spaces. Presently it appears the fire resistive requirements for this facility are already compromised. We are aware that this requirement applies in certain situations, but request that you consider an alternate NFPA viewpoint and our proposal that such a duct enclosure may be omitted for this project, • NFPA 96, Figure A- 1- 31(c), illustrates that a duct enclosure is not required until the duct passes vertically through a fire -rated floor. In this project, the entire run of duct inside the building is located above the ceiling of the room in which the hood is located. Since this duct does not penetrate a fire -rated floor, NFPA does not require a duct enclosure. A mitigating factor is that both the room and the ceiling cavity are presently protected with automatic fire sprinklers. The jurisdiction that approved the present installation, which has no duct enclosure in this ceiling space, likely considered the positive aspect of non - required sprinklers above the ceiling when they interpreted requirements of applicable codes and standards. The new duct will be protected with sprinkler heads inside the duct, which is an Improvement when compared to the present installation which has no such sprinklers, The new duct will run directly as possible to outdoors, which is again an improvement when compared to the present installation which routes through three floors of Hospital space.
