RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF TUKWILA, WASHINGTON, SUPPORTING THE
REGIONAL HOUSING LEVY, AS PART OF A REGIONAL
RESPONSE TO THE INADEQUATE SUPPLY OF
HOUSING AND SUPPORT SERVICES FOR LOW INCOME
HOUSEHOLDS IN KING COUNTY.
WHEREAS, approximately 10,000 people, including families with children, are
homeless in King County; and
WHEREAS, nearly 85,000 King County families are in need of housing assistance or
are at risk of losing their homes; and
WHEREAS, the largest groups in need are: families with children including homeless
families, and those at risk of becoming homeless, victims of domestic violence and the working
poor; and
WHEREAS, existing sources of funds for low income housing expenditures are
insufficient to meet current and projected needs, and also customarily require local matching
funds; and
WHEREAS, a lack of resources, coordination, policy direction and escalating prices has
resulted in a growing problem of homelessness and lack of affordable housing; and
WHEREAS, King County convened a broad based, multi disciplinary Regional
Working Group and Citizens Advisory Committee representative of all areas of the county to
develop a plan for providing a regional, coordinated response to the housing needs; and
WHEREAS, the Human Services Roundtable worked with King County to develop the
supportive services portion of the plan, and adopted the Regional Housing Levy as a high
priority issue; and
WHEREAS, the Regional Housing Levy will be an 8 -year levy generating $150 million,
costing King County residents approximately $28 per year on a $155,000 home; and
WHEREAS, the levy will provide approximately 2,420 housing units and support
services for low income households throughout King County, ultimately benefiting more than
77,000 King County families over the next 30 years;
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA,
WASHINGTON, DOES HEREBY RESOLVE TO ENDORSE THE REGIONAL
HOUSING LEVY, AND URGES IT'S CITIZENS TO DO SO AS WELL.
PASSED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA, WASHINGTON,
at a regular meeting thereof this 2nd day of March 1992.
