PARKS COMMISSION
MINUTES
April 23, 2014 5:30pm Tukwila Community Center
Call to Order: Parks Committee Chairperson Sean Albert called the meeting to order at 5:30pm.
Attendance: Commissioners – Sean Albert, Don Scanlon, Alice Russell, Joanne McManus, Julie Lee
Absent - Hassan Abdi
Staff – Stephanie Gardner
Approval of Minutes: Don Scanlon moved to approve the Minutes of the March 19, 2014 meeting with changes.
Joanne McManus seconded the motion, and the motion passed unanimously.
Business Items
A.Project Update – The Commission reviewed the Project Update included in the Agenda Packet.
B.DHP Phase II Design – Staff shared the information contained in the Project update section of the packet
and Sean Albert provided additional details. Staff distributed copies of the upcoming community
workshop postcard and informed the commission that the postcard is being distributed to neighbors
within a half mile of the preserve and to all those who were invited to the Phase I opening.
C.Park Rules Update – Staff continue to work on a draft update of the Park Rules and Regulations and plan
to bring a draft before the commission at the May meeting for review.
D.2015-2016 Budget Prep – Staff shared a basic overview of the upcoming budget prep. cycle and informed
the Commission that additional information would be forthcoming.
E.Department Update – Staff provided information about the WRPA awards received at the WRPA
Conference, including Spotlight Awards for the Healthy Earth Healthy You 5K Fun Run, Summer Youth &
Teen Brochure, Moving Listening Sessions (part of the PROS Plan), Citation of Merit for Mike Arizona and
his work along the shoreline by BECU, and Distinguished Service Award for Paul Surek. A re-presentation
will occur at the May 27, 2014 City Council meeting. Staff provided an overview of the recent April
Maintenance week which occurred at TCC. Updates including the Parks Supervisor position, Healthy You,
Healthy Earth 5k were discussed. Staff also distributed the summer events calendar.
Other: Don Scanlon followed up with questions he emailed to staff regarding vegetation plans in parks and public
comments at a recent City Council meeting. Staff provided a brief follow up to each question.
Adjournment: Don Scanlon moved to adjourn at 6:30pm. The motion was seconded by Alice Russell. The motion
passed unanimously.
