Solid Waste Rates
ISSUE
Solid waste and recycling fees for commercial, multi-family and residential subscribers will increase
effective April 1, 2008.
BACKGROUND
The City currently has an Agreement with Allied Waste of Kent to provide solid waste collection,
disposal and recycling services to commercial, multi-family and residential customers. The Agreement
is scheduled to expire on March 30,2012.
DISCUSSION
Under the terms of the Agreement, Allied Waste is authorized to adjust the rates on an annual basis by
an amount equal to 80% change in the Consumer Price Index (CPl). Specifically, the Bureau of Labor
Statistics Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers was used to adjust rates. The
adjustment is authorized only on the service portion of rates (transfer fee costs are excluded). For
2008, the service portion of rates will increase by 2.90 % .
