Rants, Mayor Scott McCue D.B.A. Installation Etc. 4119 Jewell Rd. Bothell, WA 98012 RE: Richs Stoves, Spas, and Patio Mechanical Permit Application Plan check number M92 -0077 Dear Mr. McCue: The following comments are the list of conditions we discussed earlier pertaining to this application and building permit numbers B92 -0109 and B92 -0111. Please respond to these as necessary. 1. A separate mechanical permit will be required for each wood stove, pellet stove, or gas fireplace. When each permit receives its final field inspection approval, that permit must be kept on site and available to the Fire or Building Inspectors for future verification. NOTE: Future replacement of any appliance for another model will require a new permit and an additional chimney inspection by a person certified for such. 2. A combination of all appliances must be considered in showing compliance with the Washington State Energy Code of BTU output 'versus heat loss calculations. NOTE: 1) No exceptions have been provided in the State Energy Code for display use. 2) If the combined BTU output of these appliances is greater then 150% of that allowed by code, then the equipment owner /operator will be required to submit a written procedural method for operation of these products to ensure code compliance. 3. Provide information on combustion air requirements of U.M.C. Chapter 6 which will coincide with 150% limits of heat loads discussed above. Phone: (206) 433.1800 • City Hall Fax (206) 433.1833 Page 2 4. We are anticipating application to be made for a system, providing adequate ventilation and air quality regulated by the State and U.B.C. NOTE: The ventilation and air quality requirements must be completed prior to occupancy of this space. 5. Provide the manufactures installation instructions for each chimney connecter from each appliance to its currently permitted chimney system. The manufacturers listed horizontal offset requirements are of critical concern. Please confirm you have received these comments by contacting this office and /or submit revisions within ten working days. Feel free to call me if there are any questions, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 431 -3670. Superpipe 8 is completely Superchimney compatible and can be fitted to any system that receives standard stovepipe. Space Saving- Because of its double wall construction, Superpipe 6 can be installed only 6" from walls or combustible materials rather than the standard 18" for regular black stovepipe. Tested - Superpipe 6 is tested by Warnock Hersey to applicable ULC standards. Safe by Design The 430 stainless steel inner liner retains heat while the outer surface stays cooler. And, because double -wall construction maintains a better heat balance between the stove and chimney, creosote buildup in the chimney system is substantially reduced. r• .r„ In fact, Superpipe 6 runs coder than any system tested. Designed for Performance_ the vent openings in Superpipe 6 are designed to recover the maximum heat for super efficiency and comfort, To make it look as good as it works, Superpipe i3 has a scratch resistant, mat black finis designed to withstand 1000°F LL.sts many times longer than conventional stovepipe. Easy to Install The use of telescopic or adjustable lengths eliminates cutting to size and makes it easy to install for amateurs and professionals alike. Telescopic sections adjust from 3' 6" to 5'6". Adjustable sections from 12" to 18 ". Superpipe 6 has it all. Available in 6, 7 and 8" diameters. With Woodheat, Everyone Wins, For years, Avalon woodstoves have set industry standards in product quality and performance. While we're proud that our commitment to excellence in design and production has placed us at the forefront of an ever - changing industry, our main concerns have always been you, the consumer, and the environ- ment we all share. Over the years, we've found fresh, new ways to make wood heat a user and environment - friendly alternative. The bottom line is that heating with wood is something that can improve and enhance our lives, and the lives of future generations to come. Wood is a renewable resource. By heating with wood, you are eliminating the use of swiftly - depleting fossil fuels, which can't be replaced. A gallon of oil or a lump of coal for example, takes literally thousands of years to form. 12 Reasons To Win With 1. Solid Brass Loading Door - Avalon's smooth - finished heavy duty cast or optional solid brass door offers one of the industry's largest fire views. 2. Door Seal • A unique extended flange on the body of the stove ensures a positive seal for airtight closure of the door. As door gasketing compresses over time, the flange continues to seat in the gasketing for a secure seal. 3. Ash Fender - Prevents ash spillage onto the hearth. 4. Flue Collar - is Installed at a 45 degree angle and designed to allow for easy rear or top venting and simpler installation. 1 Full Convection Chamber - Standard on all units, draws in cool room air and releases it warmed into your home. Combustion Air Control - One easy - use control regulates incoming combustion air and the burn rate of the fire. 8. Ever -clear Airwash System - The warm combustion air Is forced down and across the viewing glass, forming a shield to prevent soot and creosote from adhering to the glass. 9. Primary Combustion Air - Is directed to the base of the fire from Avalon's airwash system. 10. Secondary Air - constantly enters the unit through secondary air tubes for complete, efficient combustion at all burn rates. 11, MO Wool Ceramic Blanket* • covers the baffle for super-heated ignition of gases as they pass over its surface, ' ,'}i):.• , . .; x_,- x. crbu ;}a'tYSi G' tr ,.s<v.'..lk We've all heard about the Greenhouse Effect; the gradual warming of the earth's atmosphere by carbon dioxide released when oil and other fossil fuels are burned. By contrast, heating with wood is one of the few ways to warm your home without contribut- ing to this global problem. Although burning wood does add carbon dioxide to the environment, a log decaying in the forest produces as much of the gas as if it were burned. If we continue to reforest to keep up with consumption, wood will provide a viable en- ergy source indefinitely. And when wood is used in conjunction with today's high -tech, EPA approved stoves and inserts, everyone wins; the environment, you, and future gen- erations. That's another thing to feel warm about. VALON T. 12. Firebrick Baffle With Deflector - Restricts the gases from exiting the flue and entering the environment. The deflector forces the gases to channel on each side of the plate, prohibiting them from going directly up the flue. The firebrick in the baffle retains high tempera- tures to ignite gases in the secondary burn area. Passions of the Hearth For centuries, people have shared a common passion for the hearth. Universally, the flickering flames of a wood fire invoke the very essence of 'home'. Yet today, even the most practical homeowner can be a part of that passion, because now, more than ever before, heat- ing with wood makes sense. If you're in the market for a high -tech woodstove or fireplace insert to make the most of your fuel dollar, look to the Avalon. The 996 Flush was developed by the world's leading manufacturer of high -tech appli- ances, setting industry standards in clean burn and operational excellence for over a decade. Environmentally sound, budget conscious and user - friendly, the 996 is today's hottest value in advanced, inspired combustion design. ®9 Peak Efficiency The key to gauging any stove or insert's value is efficiency. Efficiency represents how hard the unit works to transform fuel into heat in your home. Be aware however, that while some stoves claim 'high heat transfer efficiency' and others 'unmatched combustion efficiency', you're not getting the complete picture. To compare how well your stove will both burn your fuel and transfer the resulting heat into your home, look for the stove's 'overall efficiency'. 996 Flush Insert INELIMIEMINESMININUMMUMBMII 996 Flush The Avalon 996 Flush stove and insert generate 73.6% overall efficiency - one of the industry's highest ratings. That figure represents an ad- vanced system that combines precision mixed combustion air and super- heated interior elements to generate secondary combustion throughout the burn cycle. Secondary combustion means the gases many stoves release in the form of smoke become added heat in your home. The end result is more heat with less wood, and best of all, just one simple draft control puts you in control of both the heat level in your home and heating costs year - round. M Installations Unlimited The Avalon 996 Flush offers one unit for every heating need, so installation possibilities are endless. As a freestanding stove, the 996 is Ideal for standard residential, mobile home, new construction, close clearance and alcove installation. The Avalon 996 Flush fireplace insert transforms your hearth into an efficient home heating center. AYA1L •r r T The Avalon 900 always welcomes you home to warmth, because once fueled, it can continue to feed pellets into the firepot unattended, for up to 41 hours for the insert and 50 hours for the stove. With the Avalon 900 pellet stove and insert, it's easy to take control of the heat in your home, and your fuel budget. Two simple controls regulate warmth, while a full convection chamber warms and circulates air throughout the stove, and returns the heated air to your room. More heat is just a setting away, so you can easily adjust your Avalon to consistently keep your home at the desired temperature. N TM Within the stove, a specially designed auger system transfers pellets to the firepot, where a precise blend of primary and secondary air combine for an exceedingly clean burn. In fact, the Avalon burns so clean, no visible smoke is exhausted out the chimney system) The Avalon 900 stove and insert are designed to extract the maximum heat from your fuel, heating an area up to 1,900 square feet. The air tight firebox takes all of its combustion air from outside and thus is ideally suited for today's tight sealed homes - even In a bedroom. This feature keeps the warm air in and the cold air out and provides a thermal efficiency in excess of 70 %. In addition to the beauty and ease of installation which the 6000GDV provides, it will radiate and convect heat into a room. And, because there Is no heat loss as there would be up a conventional chimney, the heat exchanger of the Golden Flame is especially effective. HEAT -N -G1.0 Fireplace Products, Inc. 6665 W. YXLtrv.1.S The ancient Maya, who inhabited the Yucatan Peninsula over 3,000 years ago, highly revered the properties of natural stone. They found that soapstone and other natural stones combined beauty with the practical ability to retain and radiate heat. For its practical benefits, the Maya cooked with stone. Because of its beauty, they carved it into statues of gods. In China, Egypt, India and Peru the mysterious heating powers of natural stone have been held in awe for cen- turies. And, in frigid Alaska, the Aleut regarded their soapstone more precious than gold. HearthStone gas heaters are built with natural stone 1/2' thick, to deliver even, gentle, penetrating warmth. Constructed with the finest quality materials by Vermont artisans, they are designed for long life. The cast iron and stone used in our gas heaters offer a beautiful alternative to the steel, brass or stamped metal used in other gas stoves. In addition, our stone captures heat, retains it longer and releases it more evenly than metal. This effect balances the on /off cycling of the stove to produce efficient, steady heat, using substantially less fuel. Expert advice on installing and operating your HearthStone stove is always available from Hearth- Stone directly or by contacting your nearest Authorized HearthStone Dealer. A HearthStone heater combines quality with lasting beauty 1,at the entire family will enjoy for years to come. With the new Sterling Gas Heater, we've combined beauty and function in one stove. Traditionally, gas heaters were built to look good or to provide heat —not both. Decorative models with a visible flame give off little heat. And stoves designed to provide heat have no visible flame, being more functional than beautiful. The Sterling is the logical culmination of gas heater technology, featuring high heat output and decorative flame. The combination of natural stone and enameled cast iron is a beautiful complement to any decor and provides even, radiant heat. And since the Sterling burns natural or liquid petroleum gas, it is well suited to either city or country living. A wide viewing window creates the warm ambi- ance of an open fireplace. The large yellow flames leap vigorously, And the ceramic logs have the Here in America, our practical Colonial ancestors quarried soapstone for bedwarmers, footwarmers, cooking griddles and sinks. In 1797, the first Vermont -made soa pstone stove was patented and acclaimed for its t'. ndrous gift of releasing oceans of warmth. And, more f ortantly, for its unique and remarkable ability to C-•• and radiate heat for hours on end. Today,3HearthStone stoves combine the age -old virtues r _of natural stone with breakthrough concepts in advanced err al "technology. Handcrafted in Vermont, they are usable products that conserve both energy money — in beautiful fashion — year after year Introducing the Sterling Gas Heater— Beauty and Practicality Combined appearance of real wood, instead of the "obviously fake" look of most gas -fire logs. The Sterling's electronic ignition eliminates the need for a standing pilot light, which reduces fuel consumption and improves overall efficiency. Operation of the unit is controlled by a wall - mounted thermostat (not provided) which main- tains a constant room temperature. And, an optional thermostatically controlled fan is available to boost heat output and improve air circulation. Available in Polished Standard Soapstone, Tamarack Serpentine or Boiaderro Serpentine, the natural stone is framed by porcelain enameled castings offered in four colors— black, brown, almond or blue.
