Maintain sprinkler protection for all enclosed areas. (NFPA 13, 4- 1.1.1) (UFC 10.302) All sprinkler drawings shall be prepared by companies licensed to perform this type of work. Drawings shall first be approved by the Washington Survey & Rating Bureau, Factory Mutual Engineering or Industrial Risk Insurers, then by the Tukwila Fire Department. No sprinkler work shall commence without approved drawings. (City Ordinance #1528 & NFPA 13, 1 -9.1) (UFC 10.305) 2. The Uniform Fire Code requires the following considerations: 1) In hazardous materials storage and consolidation rooms: A) Ventilation equal to 1 cubic foot per minute per. square foot of floor area is required. 'B) Ventilation shall run continously. C) A "break-glass" type manual shutoff labeled "ventilation system emergency shut off" shall be provided at a location acceptable to the Chief. During our phone conversation on October 8, 1991, you mentioned that the water heater room needed to be 1 -hour construction. We hav- checked the 1988 Uniform Building Code, and we believe that the Exception under Sec, 708 applies In this situation, This exception exempts rooms "where the largest piece of fuel equipment does not exceed 400,000 Btu per hour Input" The combined input of both water heaters in this room Is only 310,000 Btu per hour, Therefore, 1 -hour rated construction Is not required. 2. Since 1 -hour rated construction is not required, the only dampers required In the exhaust system are volume dampers which will be set when the building is balanced, While It Is possible that these dampers may be tampered with or reset, It will be obvious that something Is wrong long before there Is a problem. The only way the Toilet Rooms can affect the exhaust from the Water Heater Room Is if too much alr is supplied to the Toilets, If that Is the case, the exhaust from the water heater room would be reduced. This situation would be obvious very quickly, however, because the toilet rooms will get cold a id the office area will heat up, Normal building maintenance and operation will prevent It Is system from getting very for out of balance, The system would have to be very badly c .tt of balance to cause a problem for the operation of the water heaters. We believe i tis design adequately protects the occupants in the building from any hazard. 3. During our phone conversation you also mentioned that you had a concern regarding the horizontal run of Type B vents. You stated that you felt the vent system in the building was in violation of Chapter 9 of the Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC), and specifically Sec. 905, We designed the venting system based on the criteria in Appendix C of Chapter 9. The lost paragraph of Sec. 901 specifically allows this method of design for appliances with draft hoods which are listed for use with Type B vents, The water heaters meet those criteria, Appendix C, Figure No. 1, allows horizontal runs In vents within prescribed limits. The total vent height for our project is 15 feet, and the Btuh of the equipment Is 310,000. These parameters allow a horizontal run of 15 feet In a 9" duct, The horizontal run from the water heater room to the point the vent turns vertical is 12 feet.
