RE: W.I.J. furnace replacement ( 3227 S. 137th )
Plan check number 91 -173 -M
Dear Mr. Lyon:
After an initial review of subject project, it appears the
proposed 60,000 BTU furnace is over sized per Washington State
Energy Code Section 503.2.2. Your submitted heat loss load total
is 24,100 BTU, the maximum allowed at 150% would be 36,150 BTU.
Please address this concern in order that the permit process may
continue.

NATURAL GAS MODELS — Central heating furnace
designs are certified by the American Gas Association for
both natural and L.P. gas. Limit setting and rating data were
established and approved under standard rating conditions
using American National Standards Institute standards.
SAFE OPERATION —The Electronic Hot Surface Ignition
System has solid state devices, which continuously moni-
tor for presence of flame, when the system is in the heating
mode of operation. Dual solenoid combination gas valve
and regulator provide extra safety.
QUICK HEATING — Durable, cycle tested, heavy gauge
aluminized steel heat exchanger quickly transfers heat to
provide warm conditioned air to the structure. Low energy
power vent blower, to increase efficiency and provide a
positive discharge of gas fumes to the outside. Allows com-
mon venting with hot water heater.
BURNERS — Linear non - listing burners will give years of
quiet and efficient service. This burner provides even distri-
bution of heat. All models can be converted to LP gas with-
out changing burners.

FEATURES
DATA SUMAC?' TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE
• Low energy power vent blower, to
increase efficiency and provide a
positive discharge of gas fumes
• Vent proving pressure switch
• Blower door safety switch
• Energy- saving hot surface ignition
system with safety control
• Flame roll out safety device
• Optional bottom or side return air
• Left side gas - electric supply field
convertible to right side.
AIR DELIVERY — The multispeed, direct drive blower
motor, with sufficient airflow range for most heating and
cooling requirements, will switch from heating to cooling
speeds on demand from room thermostat. The blower door
safety switch will prevent or terminate furnace operation
when the blower door is removed. (Fan relay and 35VA con-
trol transformer is standard).
STYLING — Heavy gauge steel and "wrap around"
cabinet construction is used in the cabinet with baked -on
enamel finish for strength and beauty. The heat exchanger
section of the cabinet is completely lined with foil faced
fiberglass insulation. This results in quiet and efficient oper-
ation due to the excellent acoustical and insulating qualities
of fiberglass. Built -in bottom pan and alternate bottom, left
or right side return air connection provision.
FEATURES AND GENERAL OPERATION — The XL 80

The XL 80 sets you more monk .
Efficiency. Reliability. The XL 80 Gas
Furnace is built to go the distance
with better heating efficiency,
durability and comfort. That's why
you save money when you install
the XL 80.
Efficiency
Most furnaces installed 15 to 20
years ago operated at 55% - 60%
efficiency. That means that a lot of
the money you spent for gas was
wasted up the chimney. The new
Trane XL 80 gas furnace is up to
80% efficient.
What makes it so efficient? The
induced draft blower carefully con-
trols the flow of burned gases
through the heat exchangers
"wringing" out extra heat to warm
your home. So instead of letting a lot
of heat escape up the chimney, the
XL 80 gas furnace retains more of it
to heat your home.
The XL 80 Gas Furnace
gives you all the advantages
you're looking for in a high -
quality furnace.
The Trane XL 80 Gas Furnace has
many energy- saving features. The
direct hot surface igniter, for exam-
ple, is a real energy saver. Unlike a
conventional pilot light, it doesn't
burn fuel when the system isn't
operating. And it won't blow out on
a cold winter night forcing you from
your warm bed to relight it.
Excellent hating performance
And the XL 80 Gas Furnace is com-
pact, so installation is simple. It fits
right in with a minimum of fuss.
You may not have to worry about
installing a costly vent either. Your
dealer can vent furnace and water
heater together in a standard type
"B" metal vent. The XL 80 gas fur-
nace is designed to become part of
a high efficiency total comfort sys-
tem. Match it with an air conditioner,
electronic air cleaner, and humidifier
for clean year round comfort.
The more you compare the
XL 80 Gas Furnace, the
better it looks.
To compare with other furnaces,
check the AFUE rating. AFUE stands
for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency,
a measurement used by the Depart-
ment of Energy. The higher the
AFUE, the greater the efficiency.
And the lower the operating cost.
An AFUE rating of 65 is considered
poor; a rating of 80 is considered
excellent. The performance chart
below shows the XL 80 Gas Fur-
naces have AFUEs of up to 80.6 %.
High efficiency means
dollar savings - now and for
the life of the system.
Using Department of Energy stan-
dards, we compared XL 80 gas
furnaces to fifteen year old furnaces
with an AFUE of 60% in ten different
climate areas of the country. The
two charts below show you how
efficiently the XL 80 gas furnace
performs and how much you can
expect to save, depending on where
you live.
With savings like these, it's easy to
see why the XL 80 Gas Furnace can
soon pay for itself. And after its
initial payback period, it keeps on
saving for the life of the system. A
system backed by a non - prorated
20 -year limited warranty.
Safety. First and Foremost.
Nobody understands the importance
of safety more than Trane. By utilizing
an array of safety devices, Trane
makes gas an efficient and safe
means of heating your home. Pres-
sure sensitive switches prevent
exhaust gases from entering your
home.

Comparisons are based on TUD08013942 (80.6% AFUE) versus a furnace with 60% AFUE. First year operating cost savings is an estimate on
procedures. For complete operating cost data, see Energy Guide Fact Sheets. To figure approximate payback_ If first year savings is $340 use

Find out just how much the XL 80
Gas Furnace can save you. Let your
Trane Dealer conduct an energy
analysis on your home. He can calcu-
late data about how your home is
built, its location, dimensions and
how much energy you are currently
using for heating. From that, he can
tell you how much you can expect to
save with the XL 80. You have
nothing to lose and hundreds of
dollars to save.
Talk to your Trane Dealer. He has the
special training to install a system
based on the energy needs of your
home. With a properly installed, high
efficiency XL 80, you can expect to
save money year after year.

FOOTNOTES:
Comparisons are based on TUD0808942 (80.6% AFUE) versus a furnace with 60% AFUE. First year operating cost savings is an estimate on DOE calculation
procedures. For complete operating cost data, see Energy Guide Fact Sheets. To figure approximate payback: If first year savings is $340 use $300 in the
chart. If initial cost difference is $620 use $600 on the chart. The payback would be 2 years. These numbers are for illustration only.
