Dear Jack:
The framing for the existing roof of the above - referenced building was
reviewed to determine if it could support additional roof material. This
structure consists of 2 x 4 joists and 4 x 16 purl i ns supported by gl ul am
beams.
The original design was based on using a roofing that weighed 5 psf. The
actual weight of the roofing is unknown but it could be determined by
taking a few random core samples of the roofing and weighing them. The
difference between the actual roofing and the design weight is the amount
of the new roof that may be added without modifying the roof structure,
providing the following conditions are verified:
1. The 2 x 4 joists are not supporting any weight of any mechanical
equipment or sprinkler lines (these members will be overstressed by any
loads applied to them other than the basic roof loads).
2. Verify that the roof is significantly sloped for drainage
(approximately 1/4" to 1') and that no area exists where ponding of
rain water may occur.
