Extra heat is wasted . if it goes up your chimney. of all catalytic stoves are alike. If the combustor is located in or too near the flue outlet, itwill reduce pollution but the extra heat may simply be lost up the chimney. Placing the combustor in a specially - shaped firebox that directs hot gases through the combustor while in the main body of the stove is better, but still not enough. • To effectively heat your home, a catalyticwoodstove must: • First, promote complete combustion ofwood fuel. • Then, through design and engineering, create an environment that protects the combustor and optimizes catalytic combustion of the smoke. ▪ And last, but most importantly, extract the heat created by this catalytic combustion from the stove interior and circulate it evenly throughout your home: The Arrow ATS does all that and more. We named the latest member of our fuel - efficient line the Advanced Technology Stove because to simply call it "catalytic" is only part of the story. The specially-selected catalytic . combustor is designed in the stove as one component of a total heating system... a system with many outstanding features that work together to deliver more useable heat frc an every log burned while reducing dangerous cre- osote build -up and protecting the environment from , harmful pollution. In fact, the level of pollutants exiting tl to unit, when properly used, is less than the limit pro - p iced by most environmental legislation: The Arrow ATS is designed for today's woodburning family. t high burn rates, almost any stove will achieve pretty good combustion efficiency. With air inlets w ide open, it's Fairly easy to supply enough oxygen, high temperatures and mixing that promotes complete fuel combustion. (In fact, open fireplaces have high cony- . bustion efficiency, but they're not very high in overall efficiency since most of their heat goes up the chimney.) • However, sustained high burn rates not only use up a . lot of fuel, they also produce more heat than you really need. . • Low burn rates (less air, slower fuel consumption, less frequent loading) produce enough heat for most hones, but they also produce more smoke. More smoke means increased creosote build -up and more pollution. The energy - efficient, clean- burning Arrow ATS is designed to achieve high combustion efficiency even at low burn rates with full fuel loads. How? By converting the unwanted smoke into useful heat through effective catalytic combustion. Effective catalytic combustion requires proper place- ment of the combustor within the heating chamber, the , right amount of oxygen and combustible gases, and suffi- cient time at the right temperature to achieve and main- tain light -off of the combustor. But that's still only half of the home heating problem. After heat is generated, it has to be transferred efficiently into your home. And that's where a lot of other stoves leave you out in the cold. On the inside of the airtight A1'S is a cast iron lined firebox that promotes complete combustion, a massive 5- sided heat exchange system that extracts heat from the primary combustion, a secondary heat exchanger that extracts heat produced from catalytic combustion and flue gases, and a powerful 465 CFM blower that circulates the heated air evenly throughout your home. And isn't that why you want a woodstovc? More heat in your home, produced with Tess fuel, and with greater safety for your family and the environment. Easy installation in conventional or mobile homes. 07 -1 he Arrow ATS, like other woodstovc models in our filet - efficient line, can be installed as close as 6 1. inches to combustible surfaces using a listed, insu- lated chimney. (Within 1 I inches with standard pipe.) That's a real bonus if space is at a premium in your home. And you may use either outside or inside combustion air, at your option. The Arrow ATS is listed for mobile home installations, too. WI at is efficiency? 7 hen comparing the "efficiency" of woodstoves— catalytic or non- catalytic —make sure you're comparing equivalent measurements. There are three important areas of performance which are impor- tant considerations in determining how well a stove func- tions as a heat source for your home: • Combustion efficiency is the percentage of heat actu- ally generated in the firebox compared to the total ( ► t 10% ) potential energy in the fuel. This figure tells you how completely fuel is burned during a specified period, but not how much is transferred into the home. Heat transfer efficiency is the total heat transferred into the room compared to the total (100% ) heat generated by fuel combustion. This figure measures how well the stove transfers heat from the combustion chamber to the outside, but not how much heat is available for transfer. Without high combustion efficiency, heat transfer effi- ciency is useless. • Overall mew efficiency is the total amount of heat released to the room compared to the theoretical ideal - 100% fuel combustion with 100% heat transfer. This fig- ure is derived by multiplying combustion efficiency by heat transfer efficiency. Since this is the only figure that tells you how much of the potential heat in your fuel is delivered as useable heat into your home, it is the most important factor in making your decision. 4 Features • Durable, heavy gauge steel construction for long life. • Heavy -duty cast iron ported grate that allows combus- tion air up through the fuel to promote complete fuel combustion and generate more useable heat even before catalytic combustion. • Cast iron lined firebox —five times more durable than firebrick —to capture heat and transfer it to the massive heat exchange system. • Heat exchangers on 5 sides of the fire to extract more heat and produce a larger volume of hot air for home heating. • A quiet —but powerful -465 CFM blower to direct heat into the room and circulate it evenly without drafts or hotspots. • Three -speed blower control that lets you regulate heat distribution. • High temperature glass door or solid door available. (We recommend the solid door since the smoke needed for catalytic combustion may necessitate frequent clean- ing of the glass.) • Catalytic combustor, located at the entrance to the heat exchange system to ensure that all flue gases pass through the combustor for light -oaf. This additional heat from combustion of smoke fuel is extracted by the heat exchanger and circulated into the room, not lost up the chimney. • Cool -to- the -touch hardwood handle on the front - loading door and large firebox make loading easy, less time - consuming. • Slide -out ash pan eliminates the mess involved in ash disposals on other makes. With this information in mind, we think you'll agree that the Arrow ATS made an impressive showing in independent laboratory tests. Combustion efficiency -90% Heat transfer efficiency -92% Overall energy efficiency -82% • BTU output - 43,600 BTU's per hour while burning 71/2 lbs. of wood per hour. Tests conducted by OMNI Environmental Services, Inc., Beaverton, Oregon. 60.60% Is the induslry•acceptod average for non-catalytic, airtight woodsloves.
