1. Test 11 - Start 2:OOPM'
A: Purpose
To make test comparison under standard *fire conditions of a U,.L. listed
fusible link (Grinnell) and a production model of ,_ APC Dayliter
fusible dome (size / 32)
*Standard test procedure: In order to provide • test procedure that is
recognized as authoritative, the Factory Mutual fire test used for evaluating
both fusible link and fusible dome automatic fire vents was.chosen. The Factory
Mutual test conditions are described in the attached material and were used for
all the reported comparison tests.
e: Test set- up
1. Test was located in a relatively unoccupied APC warehouse location. Test
area was shielded from exterior walls by baffles on 2 sides. Test area
was on the concrete floor slab with 24' to the roof structure.
2. APC Dayliter 1 32 (4'x8' - 0x12" high) was set on two steel horses at the
4' ends of the unit.
3. Prior to assembling the PVC Fusible Dome, two 165 degree F fusible links
were placed parallel to the 48" ends, 7" off the curb wall. These links
were centered 24" from the 96" long curb walls. Links were suspended
with "S" hooks and 1/16" wire cables to the 96" long walls of curb and
through one side to a weight. The suspended weight (approximately 1/2 lb.)
was lip drop at the time the fusible links melted. Links were U.L. rated
Q
165' degree F (Grinnell Co.).
4. Along side one of the fusible links was a thermocouple rod 16" long
projecting horizontally through the curb. The thermocouple was connected
to a Pyro -Sery instrument Model Mini J., with a 0 degrees to 800 degrees F .
range. The temperature read 70 degrees F at start of test.
5. Time recording was to be done on a digital portable electronic time made
by Sportcraft. Readings in minutes, seconds and 1/100 of seconds were
available.
6. The test fire ( as described in the Factory Mutual Standard above) was .
ignited in a 12 "x12" steel pan 9" high, with 1" high of 4:1 combination
of isopropyl alchol and gasoline. The pan was centered in the middle
of the 4'x8' unit.
7. The PVC Dome was assembled with Its aluminum angle frame and the aluminum
safety structure.
C: Test
Wrelectronic timer was started at the ignition of the test fire. Temperature
and time readings were read for 100 degrees F, 200 degrees F and activation
points The link and dome activation were recorded with time readings. Three
tests were made of standard factory production PVC done units; Catalog 1 32.

E: Test Results:
1. Test 01
The APC Fusible Dome collapsed 8 seconds after the right fusible link had
failed. However, at the same temperature the second link failed and the
dome collapsed at the same time and temperature.
2. Test 02
The APC Fusible Dome collapsed at the same time and temperature of both
fusible link failures.
3. Test 03
The APC Fusible Dome collapsed 13 seconds after the right fusible link hid
failed. However, at the same temperature, the second link failed and dome
collapsed at the same time and temperature.
4. Test 11 and 13
Zorab Vosganian, P.E.
Report Dated 11/28/78
The right side fusible links failed initially before other failures on
2 of 3 tests.
F. Conclusions
The right side fusible link initial failures in Test /1 and /3 are attributed
to the shielding effect of the nearby baffle which may have concentrated the
heat intensity and duration. The left side fusible link failures and dome
collapse were, in all three cases, at the same time and temperatures. The
venting operation of the APC Fusible Dome compares exactly with the activation
of the 165 degrees F Fusible link. The UBC Code Section 3206 (d) Releasing
Devices is stated hereafter:
Smoke and Heat Venting - Sec. 3206:
(d) Releasing Devices. Releasing devices for automatically opening vents
shall be activated by temperature. The temperature releasing device shall
be operated normally at a maximum temperature of 165 degrees F; special
circumstances warranting higher releasing temperatures rlay.be approved
by the Building Official. Noncorrodible materials shall be used for
hinges, latches and related details to prevent sticking and consequent
failure to open.
The criterion stated requires a temperature actuated device and without any
doubt, this writer can state the APC Dome meets this criterion. During the
fire tests the PVC dome and its frame did not burn. No part of the dome broke
off during the test. When the dome collapsed, the entire curb frame area
was free to vent.
This writer concludes that the APC Daylitertfusible dome #32 tested met the criteria
of the UBC Code. 1

AUTOMATIC FIRE VENTS
FOR ALL INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS...
SPRINKLERED AND UNSPRINKLERED
The importance of fire venting. Automatic fire vents represent
an important component of an effective protection system for
high value occupancies. It's a fact that Automatic Fire Vents
provide many benefits, including:
• Heat and smoke exhaustion to permit efficient, safer attack
of the fire seat by fire fighters
• Improvement of occupant visibility by elevating smoke layer
thereby permitting safe and quick exit
• Elimination of explosive gases and flashback fires
• Reduction of excessive heat below roof structures which
often causes building collapse
• Operation without mechanical or electrical equipment
• Operation without need for supervisory personnel
• Protection from financial losses to owners and community
"Unsprinklered" Sprinklered Buildings. The need for automatic
fire vents in unsprinklered one -story buildings is unquestioned.
However, a building with an improperly designed, obsolete or
unsupervised sprinkler system is, in effect, an "unsprinklered"
building.
APC CORPORATION
IN EXPERIENCE. APC's uniquely designed fire vents and ex-
plosion relief vents currently help protect major buildings, coast
to coast. Our specialists work daily with architects, engineers,
safety officials and plant engineers to solve protection problems
and meet demanding requirements.
IN VERSATILITY. The variety of materials and plant configu-
rations prevalent today require a wide range of specialized
vent designs. APC's extensive engineering and manufacturing
2 APC CORPORATION
•
That's why fire protection engineers should not overlook fire
vent protection where water supply or sprinkler inadequacies
can lead to disastrous losses. A building has true sprinkler
protection only when the system is designed or updated for
actual occupancy hazards and is continuously monitored.
If not, the "unsprinklered "sprinklered building needs automatic
fire vents to help limit losses. In a total fire protection package,
automatic fire vents, spaced according to the NFPA #204M
Guide, requiring no monitoring and little maintenance, can be
installed for as little as 10% of the cost of the sprinkler system
portion.
APC'S Exclusive Safety Structure. APC utilizes an improved
safety structure, an exclusive feature in fire vent protection
and skylighting. The APC safety structure makes the roof a more
secure work place when roof maintenance or repair is neces-
sary. Only APC includes this feature on all Fire Vents and
Explosion Vents, with the exception of Model AUL.
Leads the Industry...
capabilities provide the versatility needed to meet this range
of needs.
IN RESEARCH. Since inception in 1962, APC has devoted
extensive energy researching the physical aspects of fire and
explosion protection. Active participation in regulatory and
research organizations plus APC's own independent findings
have shaped much of today's opinion regarding emergency
venting systems.

In sprinklered occupancies, should sprin-
kler system deficiencies fail to control the
fire, the Dayliter's activation helps contain
the blaze by releasing hot smoke and po-
tentially explosive gases. The fire fighter is
aided in locating the seat of the fire.
Light weight and moderate cost combined
with daylighting energy savings, make the
Dayliter attractive to designers, contrac-
tors and owners.
