Crawley Fire Chief December 17, 1985 Re: Nordstrom Warehouse /Manufacture -435 Minkler Boulevard The attached set of building plans have been reviewed by The Fire Prevention Bureau and are acceptable with the following concerns: 1. The total number of fire extinguishers required for your establishment is calculated at one extinguisher for each 3000 sq. ft. of area. The extinguisher(s) should be of the "All Purpose" (2A, 10 B:C) dry chemical type. Travel distance to any fire extinguisher must be 75' or less. (NFPA 10, 3 -1.1 and UFC 10.301b) Extinguishers shall be installed on the hangers or in the brackets supplied, mounted in cabinets, or set on shelves (NFPA 10, 1 -6.6), and shall be installed so that the top of the extinguisher is not more than 5 ft. above the floor. (NFPA 10, 1 -6.9) Extinguishers shall be located so as to be in plain view (if at all possible), or if not in plain view, they shall be identified with a sign stating, "Fire Extinguisher ", with an arrow pointing to the unit. (NFPA 10, 1 -6.3) 2. Exit hardware and marking must meet the requirements of Uniform Fire Code Sections 12.104 & 12.114. Exit doors shall be openable from the inside without the use of a key or any special knowledge or effort. (UFO 12.104b) 3. EXIT signs shall be installed at required exit doorways and where otherwise necessary to clearly indicate the direction of egress. Signs shall be of a contrasting color with the surrounding area and shall have letters not less than six inches high with a minimum letter width of 3/4 ". Crawley Fire Chief 4. Maintain sprinkler protection for all enclosed areas. (NFPA 13, 4- 1.1.1) All modifications to sprinkler systems shall have the written approval of the Washington Surveying & Rating Bureau, Factory Mutual Engineering or Industrial Risk Insurers, then by the Tukwila Fire Department. No sprinkler work shall commence without approved drawings. (City Ordinance #1141 & NFPA 13, 1 -9.1) 5. Local UL Central Station Supervision is required per UFC 10.310. 6. Paint and silkscreen room requirements: (A) The sprinkler system must be designe for extra hazard (79.804) (B) All openings must be provided with noncombustible liquid- tight raised sills at least 4" in height (UFC 79.804). (C) All doors shall be provided with approved self- closing devices (UFC 79.804). (D) All electrical wiring and equipment shall be approved for Class I, Division I hazardous locations in accordance with the Electrical Code (UFC 79.804). (E) Ventilation shall be designed to provide complete change of air in the room at least 6 times per hour in accordance with mechanical code provisions. It shall be controlled by a switch located outside the door. Ventilation and any lighting fixtures shall be operted by the same switch. An indicator light shall be installed ajacent to the switchif Class I flammable liquids are dispensed or used with the room. (F) Heating shall be as outlined in UFC 79.804 -4. (U) Special permit is required for storage and /or use of flammable or combustible liquids. 7. Crawley FIT Chief UFC 45.203. (B) Exhaust air filters required per UFC 45.204. (C) Electrical and other sources of ignition must be installed per UFC 45.205. (D) Ventilation of spray booth and spray - finishing areas must conform to UFC 45.206. (E) All electrical equipment shall be interlocked with the ventilation of spraying area so that the equipment cannot be operated unless the ventilation fans are in operation. (F) Storage and handling of flammable or combustible liquids shall conform with UFC 46.208. (4) Spray booth shall be protectd by an approved automatic extinguishing system within the spray booth and on the downstream and upstream aides of filters. (H) At least one portable fire extinguisher having a rating of not less than 20 -BC shall be located not less than 10 feet nor more than 50 feet from any Class I or Class II liquid storage area. (I) Drying apparatus, if applicable, shall conform to UFC 45.211. (J) A special fire department permit is required for the spraying of flammable or combustible finishes. 8. Wood shop must conform to UFC Article 76: (A) A special permit is required for any opertion which produces dust. (UFC 76.102). 9. All electrical wiring is to be inspected by the State Electrical Inspector, Washington State Department of Labor & Industries. (Including final inspections for wood shop, paint room and silk screen rooms and equipment) 10.
