must be complete in order to be accepted for plan review,

by the State of Washington, a notarized letter from the property owner authorizing the agent to submit this permit

application and obtain the permit will be required as part of this submittal. .
VALUATION OF CONSTRUCTION The valuation is for the work covered by this permit and must be filled in by the applicant. This •
figure is used for budget reporting purposes only and not to calculate your fees.
EXPIRATION OF PLAN REVIEW Applications for which no permit Is Issued within 180 days following the date of application shall
expire by limitation. The Building Official may extend the time for action by the applicant for a period not exceeding 180
days upon written request by the applicant as defined in Section 304(d) of the Uniform Mechanical Code (current
edition). No application shall be extended more than once.

In our recent phone conversation on smoke detector
requirements, you mentioned the exception under section 1009
that states that automatic shutoffs are not required when
all rooms have direct exit to the exterior of the building.
In our design, we have three rooftop units that serve only
the sales area (AC -1, AC -2 and AC -3 on our drawings). The
sales area is a large open space that has direct exit through
the front entry or through a fire door on another exterior
wall.
We would like you to consider waiving the requirement for
smoke detectors on these three units using the exception
under UMC 1009. Thank you for your consideration in this
matter.

The attached set of building plans have been reviewed by
The Fire Prevention Bureau and are acceptable with the
following concerns:
Remote indicator lights are required on all above
ceiling smoke detectors. (City Ordinance #1646)
1. H.V.A.C. units rated at 2,000 cfm require
auto- shutdown devices. These devices shall be separately
zoned in the alarm panel and local U.L. central station
supervision is required. (City Ordinance #1646)
Smoke detectors required by Uniform Mechanical Code
Section 1009 (a), (HVAC 2000 cfm and greater), shall
be installed in the main return -air duct ahead of any
outside air inlet or they may be installed in each
room or space served by the return -air duct.
Detectors shall also be installed in the supply duct,
downstream of the filters. Activation of any detector
shall cause the air - moving equipment to automatically
shutdown.
2. All new fire alarm systems or modifications to
existing systems shall have the written approval of The
Tukwila Fire Prevention Bureau. No work shall commence
until a fire department permit has been obtained. (City
Ordinance #1646) (UFC 10.503)
3. Dedicated fire alarm system circuit breaker(s) shall
be equipped with a mechanical lockout device. (NFPA 72
(1- 5.2.8.2))

Dear Mr. Griffin:
We are currently in the process of obtaining a permit for the
installation of the HVAC systems for COMP USA (plan check
number M94- 0185).
We are requesting that in accordance with the 1994 Uniform
Mechanical Code, smoke detectors be required only in the
supply ducts and not in both supply and return. We realize
that the 1994 code has not been adopted by many
jurisdictions, but we have found that many building
departments (most recently City of Kent) will allow for smoke
detectors in the supply duct only.
