Architect: Manson Bennett & Associates Dear Mr. Ruppert: This project involves the relocation of a building including a 4" nonstructural floor slab on a new foundation with the floor slab raised to an approximate elevation of ' 4 - supported on 4 X 4 posts 3 ft. O.C. This approach does not meet the 1973 Edition of the UBC, Section 2613 (f) para. 3; minimum reinforcement for struc- tural floor slabs. Although not precisely identified by the code, there is an additional engineering requirement to recognise that the raised slab is vulnerable to seismic loads. This combined with the vertical floor load appears to rate the idea of a raised floor slab supported on columns completely inadequate. In order to waive these requirements perhaps this would be better handled through the Appeals Board. It does appear that the relocation of the building unto a foundation providing uniform support for the entire slab area could be a practical approach. LLOYD F. Attention: Mr. Bernard Ruppert, Building Director Subject: Vips Restaurant Foundation Dear Sirs This letter is to outline the procedures and tests that will be followed for the support of the existing concrete floor slab of the referenced building in its new location. The outline was developed and agreed upon at our conference at your office on November 4, 1974. The steps are as follows: 1. Take two core samples of the slab, test the concrete strength, verify the presence of the mesh, test the mesh for its ultimate strength. 2. Clean the bottom surface of the slab after the building has been moved to its new location and together with your representative, inspect the entire slab bottom to determine its condition, thickness and possible areas of mislocation of the mesh. 3. Load test 2 or 3 areas per the U.B.C. procedures to verify the structural integrity of the slab. 4. Provide additional treated wood framing in any mutually agreed upon areas that may be determined to need additional support through lack of or misplaced mesh reinforcing, or failure during the load test.
