HomeMy WebLinkAboutCivilService 2014-06-02 Minutes„;481:;:::” a June 2, 2014 City of Tukwila 6200 Southcenter Boulevard • Tukwila, Washington 98188 Jim Haggerton, Mayor The following commissioners attended the regularly scheduled meeting of the Tukwila Civil Service Commission: Dennis Sivak, Ron Johnston and Stephen Wheeler. Others in attendance were Police Commander Dennis McOmber, Interim Fire Chief Chris Flores, Battalion Chief Lavern Peterson, Firefighters William Rodal and James Brooks, Dawn Judkins, President of IAFF Local #2088, and Kim Gilman, Civil Service Examiner. CALL TO ORDER 5:02 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FIRE DEPARTMENT BUSINESS Staffing Update Fire Captain Eligibility List Chair Dennis Sivak called the meeting to order. The Chair asked if there were any corrections needed for the May 5, 2014 Commission Meeting minutes. Ms. Judkins noted that she was not in attendance at the May meeting. The minutes were revised to reflect that Chuck Woolley attended the May 5th meeting on behalf of IAFF Local #2088. Minutes were approved as revised. Interim Chief Flores noted that there was 1 employee out on long -term disability and that 3 employees are out on medical leave. He reported that lentry -level firefighter is in the Academy and set to graduate on June 19`n The Civil Service Examiner presented the eligibility list for the position of Fire Captain. She noted that 16 candidates applied, 11 of whom passed the tactical, and 9 were ranked on the list after completing the Assessment Center. The list was certified by the Commissioners. City of Tukwila 6200 Southcenter Boulevard • Tukwila, Washington 98188 Jim Haggerton, Mayor Battalion Chief List Extension Chief Flores requested a 1 year extension, or until the next testing process can occur for this position. He noted that the Kent Regional Fire Authority anticipates hosting a Battalion Chief Tactical exam in February, 2015. Commissioners discussed the Chief's request. MOVED BY JOHNSTON, SECONDED BY WHEELER THAT THE CURRENT FIRE BATTALION CHIEF LIST BE EXTENDED FOR 1 YEAR, COMMENCING ON JUNE 10, 2014 , AND ENDING JUNE 9, 2015, OR UNTIL THE COMPLETION OF THE NEXT FIRE BATTALION CHIEF TESTING PROCESS, WHICHEVER COMES SOONER, OR DEPLETED. MOTION CARRIED. POLICE DEPARTMENT BUSINESS Staffing Update Commander McOmber reported that there is 1 records specialist currently in background and that recently another vacancy occurred in that department due to 1 candidate not passing probation. He noted that 1 Police Officer is currently on military leave with an anticipated return date in July, 3 officers are on Light Duty, 1 Entry -Level officer is currently in the Academy, 1 Lateral -Entry is in FTO, 3 Laterals are scheduled to start work over the next month, and 4 Laterals are currently being backgrounded. Commander McOmber explained that if all candidates in the background are hired, the Police Department will be at full capacity and have 2 pipeline positions filled. Commissioners inquired how seniority would be determined if officers are hired on the same day.
