SECTION 2B PAGE 2 EARTHWORK 2B -2 PRODUCTS A. FILL MATERIALS 1. General: It shall be the responsibility of the Contractor to. provide on -site and /or off -site fill materials as required to complete the project and as required by this Section of the Specifications. 2. On -Site Fill Material On-site cut material may be used as fill provided it is free of debris and is capable of compaction as specified in Section 2B -3, paragraph E, "COMPACTION OF FILLS ". 3. Off -Site Fill Material: Off -site fill material, if required, shall have the Architect's approval prior to placement and shall be capable of compaction as specified in Section 2B -3, paragraph E, "COMPACTION OF FILLS 2B -3 EXECUTION A. PREPARATION Excavation and filling required for footings and all other building construction shall be compacted as specified in Section 2B -3, paragraph E. B. FINISH GRADING 1. Subgrade Elevations: a. Interior Concrete Slabs: .At bottom side of interior concrete slabs, grade tolerance i " +. b. EXCAVATION, FILL AND GRADING 1. General: Excavate as necessary for work shown on drawings or specified; remove rocks, boulders and other obstructions. Allow ample space for formwork. Excavate for footings to firm undisturbed soils as shown, but in no case less than 1' - 6" in depth below finished grade. Keep footing excavations clean, dry and firm. Over- excavate all rain softened and disturbed soils to firm undisturbed soil. Leave bearing surfaces un- disturbed, level and true. Grade surface to provide good drainage and prevent ponding of water. Keep excavation free of water. 2B -3 EXECUTION, continued 2. Excess Excavation: Should excavation, through error, be carried to elevations lower than those shown on drawings, fill to proper levels at this Con - tractor's expense. Fill under footings with concrete of required strength, under slabs and grade beams with compacted gravel; earth or gravel fill under footings not permitted. • Filling: Use only approved materials for fills. Make fills as soon as feasible thereafter to insure maximum settlement. Backfill shall be placed in layers not more than 8" thick. Fill to subgrade. elevations. SECTION 2B PAGE 3 EARTHWORK • Grading Grade entire area indicated to reasonably true and even surfaces; slope ground away from building walls to facilitate drainage. Grade to uniform levels or slopes between points where grades are noted on drawings, round surfaces at abrupt changes in levels. Grade tolerances shall be as specified in Section 2B -3, paragraph B. • SHORING Brace and shore sides of excavations as necessary to prevent cave -ins and as required by law; repair slides and cave -ins should they occur. Remove shoring before backfilling. E. COMPACTION OF FILLS Compact to 95,E density under slabs, 90% density elsewhere, in accordance with ASTM D1557M; Testing Laboratory to make tests to assure compliance. Place all fills in lifts, which, when compacted will not exceed 8" in depth. Compact with vibrator compactor adjacent to walls, multiple - wheeled pneumatic tired rollers, or other approved equipment elsewhere. Compaction tests will be taken in area of backfills prior to placement of any material over areas. Placed material not meeting compaction specifications will be removed by the Contractor, replaced, and re- tested. Costs of tests performed in areas of replacement fills to be paid for by the General Contractor. SECTION 2D PAGE 1 ASPHALTIC CONCRETE PAVING 2D -1 GENERAL A. REQUIREMENTS ?Special C5nditicns" are binding on the work in this Section. B. STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS Conform to "Recommended Design Procedures and General Specifications on Asphalt Concrete Pavements ", Bulletin No. 3, Edition 1980, issued by the Asphalt Paving Association of Washington, Inc., as supplemented and modified herein. Standard Specifications may be obtained from the Association, 1200 Westlake Avenue North, Seattle, Washington 98109. C. EVIDENCE OF COMPLIANCE Submit certificate from mixing plant stating the paving material delivered to site conforms to these specifications. D. WORK ON PUBLIC PROPERTY When any work is located on public property, the Contractor shall conform to all City, County and State ordinances governing this work and shall comply with all instructions from the respective Building, Street and Highway Departments on portions over which they have jurisdiction. 2D -2 MATERIALS A. BASE COURSE 3" asphalt treated base course, materials and installation shall conform to Section 32, State of Washington Standard specifications, for road and bridge construction. B. PAVEVENT Modified Class "B" mix, compacted thickness 2 inches. C. EXTRUDED CONCRETE CURBS Extruded concrete curbs shall be machine molded Portland cement curbs. Install with concresive 1001 -LPL bonding agent in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Bonding agent shall totally cover surface under the extruded curb with a brushed on film with a minimum thickness. of 10 mils. Any proposed substitute for bonding agent, must receive Architect's approval. Provide drainage holes wherever asphalt does not slope away from curb. D. TRAFFIC MARKING AND PARKING LINE PAINT Preservative Paint Company traffic marking paint L -1919 (white). E. ALTERNATE PAVING SYSTEM Provide 4" crushed rock base course with 2" of class "B" mix pavement in lieu of 3" ATB course. 3" Class "B" in truck roadways. SECTION 20 PAGE 2 ASPHALTIC CONCRETE PAVING 2D -3 EXECUTION A. PREPARATION FOR INSTALLATION Grading: All surfaces shall be accurate to line and sloped to drain. Grading shall be accomplished by the use of a motor grader and scarifier and subgrade shall be thoroughly rolled with a modern power roller. Machine grading shall be supplemented by hand grading where areas are small, or as required. B. STERILIZING Surfaces to be paved shall be sterilized with Casoron G-10, or Casoron G -4, or Casoron W -50 mixed and applied according to manufacturer's printed technical data. Sterilizer shall be applied• after finish grading and just before base course is laid. No substitutions accepted. Caution shall be used to avoid contamination of all planting areas. C. PRIMING Where pavement abuts building', walls, curbs, walks, etc., an approved asphaltic emulsion, or a mixture of 1/2 paving asphalt and 1/2 gasoline shall be applied in such manner as to prevent soiling surfaces. D. INSTALLATION OF BASE COURSE An on -site inspection shall be made of the base course and all soft areas shall be removed and patched prior to placement of topping. E. FINISH SURFACES Free from ridges of depressions, properly sloped for drainage. Remove and replace, as directed, defective pavement and that which does not drain properly; patching not acceptable. F. PARKING LANES Paint all traffic markings, and 3" wide parking lines as indicated on the drawings. . CLEAN UP Clean all surfaces of building, walls, curbs, walks, etc., soiled by work under this Section. At the completion of each portion of the work, the subcontractor shall immediately remove all waste materials, rubbish, equipment and surplus' materials. At the end of construction project, all planting areas to be free of. asphaltic base or paving. END SECTION 2D > SECTION 3A PAGE 2 . CONCRETE FORMWORK 3A -2 DETAILED REQUIREMENTS Continued C.' CHAMFERS Chamfer external corners of concrete to be exposed. with 3/4" triangular strip placed in forms unless otherwise noted. EMBEDDED ITEMS Place embedded items, anchors, etc., furnished through other Sections of the specifications. • TREATMENT OF FORMS Plywood forms: Coat with approved stainless form'oil; for surfaces to be painted, use minimum quantity required for form removal. . REMOVAL OF FORMS Remove forms at a time and in such a manner as to insure complete safety of•the structure, and without damage to concrete surfaces. , Remove form ties four days after pour, unless otherwise directed. Leave supporting forms and shoring in place until concrete has attained sufficient strength to safely support its own weight plus any loads imposed upon it. The Building Official may require forms to remain in place for a specified time. END SECTION 3A `. 3A -1 GENERAL A. REQUIREMENTS "Special Conditions"• SECTION 3A PAGE 1 CONCRETE FORMWORK are binding on the work in this Section. B. WORK IN OTHER SECTIONS Of these specifications: For steel reinforcement for concrete see Section 3B. C. BUILDING CODE Conform to requirements of governing codes, for concrete, as supplemented herein. D. INSPECTION Formwork inspection shall be made by the City Building Official and as required in Supplementary General Conditions, paragraph 6, "INSPECTIONS AND TESTS ", and their approval obtained before the placement of concrete. E. TOLERANCES FOR BUILDING CONSTRUCTION Maintain the following dimensional tolerances: Column and beam sections Minus :" Slab Thickness Minus :" Variations from levels and conspicuous lines (Panels) Plus 1" Plus II" Maximum Maintain plane and true surfaces where exposed; take special care at all cold joints to match adjacent pour surfaces. 3A -2 DETAILED REQUIREMENTS A. GENERAL Conform to shapes, lines and dimensions shown on drawings; form for weakened plane joints and surface indentations, as indicated. Make forms tight to prevent leakage. Provide access openings as required for cleaning and inspection of forms and reinforcement prior, to placing of concrete. Arrangement of joints and ties for board and plywood forms is subject to the approval of the Architect. Inspect all wood and plywood forms to insure smooth, clean surfaces whenever concrete surfaces are to be exposed. Design, engineering and construction of formwork is the responsibility of the Contractor. Design formwork for loads and lateral pressures in accordance with Recommended Practice for Concrete Formwork: (AC1 347) of the American Concrete Institute, and the Uniform Building Code. B. PLYWOOD FORMS EXT -DFPA "PLYFORM ", Douglas Fir, not less than 5/8" thick. SECTION 3B .PAGE 1 STEEL REINFORCEMENT 3B -1 GENERAL A. REQUIREMENTS "Special Conditions" are binding on the work in this Section. B. WORK IN OTHER SECTIONS of these specifications: . For formwork for cast -in- place concrete, see Section 3A. For structural steel members and miscellaneous metals, see Section 5F. C. SPECIAL INSPECTION Provided for by the General Contractor; see Section 1, Item 1 -7. SHOP DRAWINGS Submit two (4) sets. Prepare bending and placing diagrams in accordance with Manual of Standard Practice for Detailing Reinforced Concrete Structures, (ACI 315). 3B -2 DETAILED REQUIREMENTS A. BARS ASTM A615, Types, Sizes and Grades as required by drawings; all bars clean, free of rust and loose scale. WIRE MESH ASTM A- 185 -68, welded 6 inch by 6 inch noted. TIE WIRE No. 16 double annealed iron wire. ACCESSORIES Conform to "Manual of Standard Practice for Reinforced Concrete Construction of the American Concrete Institute ". Include all devices necessary for proper placing, spacing, supporting and fastening steel reinforcement in. place. Metal accessories galvanized where legs will be exposed in finished; concrete surfaces. Accessories may concrete, ceramic, or plastic when approved by Architect. 0. 10:wire, unless otherwise 39 -3: FORMING b PLACING BENDING&. STRAIGHTENING Accurately form bars to detail in accordance with Code require- ments; other bends or kinks not permitted. Make cold bends around pin with diameter 6 or more times least bar dimensions; heating of reinforcement permitted only if entire operation is approved. .PLACING Accurately position reinforcement and secure against displacement `by an approved system; place so as to be embedded in, and protected by concrete as required and as noted on drawings. Hold all mesh securely in middle of slab; provide No.'5 hanger and.riser bars as required. Provide around all openings in slabs'and walls as noted. Lap all bars as noted on drawings; welding, if permitted, by AWS Certified Welders. Extend reinforcement through and lap beyond construction joints; stop reinforcement at expansion and cold joints, unless:otherwise. shown,: See that reinforcement. is inspected and clean before 'pouring of concrete. SECTION 36 3D -1 GENERAL A. REQUIREMENTS "Special Conditions" SECTION 3D PAGE 1 CONCRETE, GENERAL are binding on the work in this Section. B. WORK IN OTHER SECTIONS of these specifications: For extruded concrete curbs, see Section 2D. For concrete formwork, see Section 3A. For steel reinforcement for concrete, see Section 3B. For anchor bolts, see Section 5F. C. CODES Requirements of the Uniform Building Code, 1976 Edition as adopted by the City, if more rigid than those herein, govern, and standard specifications for municipal public works construction where applicable. D. SPECIAL INSPECTIONS AND TESTS Tests and special inspections for concrete shall be as outlined in Special' Conditions and shall be provided for as required by the Building Regulations of the city or as required by the Owner. The special inspector and testing laboratory shall be approved by the City Building Inspections Director and shall be selected and paid for by the Owner. E. COORDINATION OF WORK Provide all necessary sleeves, inserts, anchors, reglets, boxes for openings, etc., for general construction work. Coordinate the work of subcontractors who may set their own sleeves, inserts, anchors, etc. Cooperate with all subcontractors and set all boxes furnished by other trades for chases or openings. F. NOTICE OF INTENT TO PLACE CONCRETE Notify the.Testing Laboratory and the Building Department at least 24 hours before the intended placement of concrete. G. COLD WEATHER REQUIREMENTS Provide adequate equipment for heating the concrete materials and protecting the concrete during freezing or near freezing weather. All concrete materials and all reinforcement, forms, fillers and ground with which the concrete is to come in contact shall be free from frost. Use no frozen materials or materials containing ice. H. DEFECTIVE WORK Remove and replace defective work when directed by the Architect. Slabs that show excessive shrinkage cracks, slabs that are not of the thickness called for, and any slab which does not drain properly, shall be removed and replaced. 3D -2 PRODUCTS A. ADMIXTURES AND BONDING AGENTS Subject to Architect's prior approval. 3D -3 EXECUTION A. GENERAL Conform to "Building Code Requirements for Reinforced Concrete ", ACI 318 -71, as Architect judges them applicable and as supplemented and modified herein. ACI 318 -71 may be obtained from Portland Cement Association, 721 Boston Building, Denver, Colorado. 80202. 1. Handling of Materials: Deliver, store, and handle materials so as to prevent their deterioration, in the intrusion of foreign matter, or their damage by water or otherwise. Deliver and store packaged materials in original packages until ready for use. . Lines and Levels: Employ an experienced surveyor to pick up reference points established. Supply all necessary lines and levels to insure that all finished concrete work is straight, true and square. 3. Protection of Surfaces Special precautions will be taken to prevent fresh concrete from splashing on exposed and finish surfaces. B. PREPARATION OF EQUIPMENT AND PLACE OF DEPOSIT Before concrete is placed, clean all equipment for mixing and trans - porting the concrete and remove all debris and ice from the spaces to be occupied by the concrete, thoroughly wet or oil forms; masonry filler units that will be in contact with concrete shall be well drenched, and the reinforcement thoroughly cleaned of ice or other coatings. Remove water from place of deposit before concrete is placed. SECTION 3D PAGE 3 CONCRETE, GENERAL 3D -3. EXECUTION, continued C. MIXES AND SLUMP 1. Mixes: As noted on the Structural Drawings. 2. Slumps: For slabs on grade and for beams: 3" maximum, 1" minimum. For foundation walls and footings: 4" maximum, 1" minimum. D. CONVEYING AND DEPOSITING 1. Conveying: a. Convey concrete from the mixer to the place of final deposit by methods which will prevent the separation or loss of materials. 2. b. Equipment for chuting, pumping, and pneumatically• conveying concrete shall be of such size and design as to insure a practically continuous flow of concrete' at the delivery and without separation of materials. Depositin7: 'a. Deposit concrete as nearly as practicable in its final position to avoid segregation due to rehandling or flowing. The concreting shall be carried on at such a rate that the concrete is at all times plastic and flows readily into the spaces between the bars. No concrete that has partially hardened or been contaminated by foreign materials shall hc deposited on the work, nor shall retempered concrete be used. b. When concretir; is once started, it shall be carried on as a continuous operation until the placing of the panel or section is completed. The top surface shall be generally level. When construction joints are necessary, they shall be made in accordance with ACI Cede 318 -71, Section 6.4. c. Thoroughly compact all concrete by suitable means during the operation of placing and thoroughly work 'around the reinforce- ment and embedded fixtures and into the corners of the forms. d. Where conditions make placing difficult or where the reinforce- ment is congested and it is doubtful that the specified design mix will fill the area, use a concrete mix in which the design mix is altered by using 3/8" maximum aggregate and 4 sack more of cement. e. Take care to insure that all the mesh in the slabs is placed into the center of the slabs, or as detailed. 3D -3 EXECUTION, continued SECTION 3D PAGE 4 CONCRETE, GENERAL E. :VIBRATION .Employ mechanical vibrators supplemented by hand rodding whenever in the opinion of the Concrete Inspector or Architect, additional vibration may be necessary. JOINTS AND STOPPAGES 1. General: n accordance with ACI Code 318 -71', Section 6.4. . Construction Joints: Install where indicated on the structural drawings and in accordance with details on the structural drawings. Stop ,welded wire mesh continuity at construction joints. Shrinkage Joints: Install where indicated on the structural drawings and in accordance with details on the structural drawings. Shrinkage joint shall be troweled.. 4 Expansion Joints: Asphalt expansion joints shall be installed where indicated on the architectural drawings. CURING 1.
