Always refer to framing plans for proper location of trusses. Do not simply Install them "as they come off the pile:' Refer to truss elevation drawings for proper location of cantilever and Interior bearings. 2. If a truss is damaged before erection, obtain repair or replacement instructions from a qualified truss designer prior to setting the truss. Repairs made on the ground are usually better and always easier. 3. Never alter any part of any truss for any reason without professional advice, Cutting, drilling, or notching any member without designer approval will destroy the structural integrity of the truss and void any expressed or Implied warranty. 4. Girders are trusses which carry other trusses or relatively large areas of roof or floor framing, Almost never will a common truss (or even a double common) serve as a girder, If there is a question about whether a girder is needed, consult your fabricator. 5. Double girders are commonplace. Truss spacing should be In accordance with the truss design. Sometimes very small deviations from designed spacing can create very big problems. Seek professional advice if you need to alter any spacing, 7. Construction loads such as stacks of plywood, sheetrock, plies of roofing, gravel, or bricks should never be placed on trusses before they are properly braced. Such loads should be kept small, located over walls (never at mid- span), and distributed over the roof or floor within minutes after they are set in place. 8. Make certain that proper temporary bracing is installed (see the Truss Plate institute publication "Bracing Wood Trusses: Commentary and Recommendations ") as the trusses are set. Never leave a job at night until all appropriate bracing is in place. 9. Trusses which do not meet Interior bearing walls should be shimmed, Do not pull the trusses down. They will tend to return to original camber and In a few days or weeks your sheetrock man will be repairing the Joint between the ceiling and wall. 10. If trusses do not rest on all bearing walls properly, make certain that interior walls are not too high, (If the trusses are flat trusses - make certain they have been erected right side up.) Correct with shims or by lowering high bearings. The..russ Plate Institute's "Design Specifications for Light Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses" are used as the criteria for the design of these individual trusses as structural components. Regardless of how carefully,wood trusses are designed and fabricated, the final erection and bracing of a roof or floor system is critical. It is at this critical stage of construction that many significant design assumptions such as proper bracing are either fulfilled or Ignored. If Ignored, the consequences may be collapse of the structure. The theory of bracing Is to apply sufficient support at right angles to the plane of the truss to hold every truss member In the position assumed for it in design. The builder or erection contractor Is, however, responsible for wood truss handling and for proper temporary and permanent �bracing. He must assure that trusses are not structurally klamaged during erection and that they are maintained In alignment before, during, and after installation. Temporary and permanent bracing may follow, but not necessarily be limited to the building designer's framing plan which should be the source of truss bracing and building connection details. The design of wood trusses in accordance with TPI design criteria assumes: 1. Truss members are initially siraight,'uniform in cross section, and uniform in design properties. 2. Trusses are plane structural components. installed vertically, braced to prevent lateral movement, and parallel to each other at the design spacing. 3. Truss members are pinned at Joints for ,determination of axial forces only. 4. There is continuity of chord members at joints for determination of moment stresses. 5.Compresslon members are laterally restrained at specific loca- tions or Intervals, 6.Superimposed dead or live Toads act vertically, wind loads are applied normal to the plane of the top chord, and concentrated loads are applied at a point. 7.In addition to the lateral bracing specified by the truss designer, the building designer will specify sufficient bracing at right angles to the plane of the truss to hold every truss member in the posi- tion assumed for it in design. 8. The building designer (not the truss designer) will specify suffi- cient bracing and connections to withstand lateral loading of the entire structure.
