12.1.3 Specification Asphalt: The asphalt shall be
certified by the manufacturer to meet ASTM
D- 312 -84, Type III. (See Section 6.6 for more
details.)
12.1.4 Preparation: Broom the membrane surface
and remove all of the loose roofing gravel and
debris. Make random cuts or breaks in the old
membrane 4 ft. o.c. to allow vapor pressure to
vent. All wet or deteriorated insulation or
membrane must be removed and replaced
prior to the application of new roofing mate-
rials, The surface should be primed with
TAMKO Concrete Primer at a rate of approxi-
mately 3/4 gal. per 100 sq. ft. prior to the
application of new roofing materials.
12.1.5 TAMKO VAPOR -CHAN: Over the old mem-
brane and starting at the low point of the
roof, install one ply of TAMKO VAPOR -CHAN
base sheet. The VAPOR -CHAN should be side
lapped 2 in., and end lapped 4 in. The base ply
should be secured to the old membrane with
spots of Type III, Steep Asphalt spaced on (not
to exceed) 24 in. centers.
12.1.6 AWAPLAN Regular or AWAPLAN 170:
Starting at the low point of the roof, install
one ply of TAMKO AWAPLAN or AWAPLAN
170 granule surfaced sheet, side lapped 4 in.,
and end lapped 6 in. The AWAPLAN or
AWAPLAN 170 should be solidly adhered to
the base ply (pressed into the hot asphalt)
with approximately 30 lbs. (t 15%) of speci-
fication asphalt.
12.1.7 AWAPLAN Heat Welding: Starting at the
low point of the roof, install one ply of
TAMKO welding grade AWAPLAN, side lapped
4 in., and end lapped 6 in. The AWAPLAN
should be solidly adhered to the base ply by
heating the back -side with a torch at the junc-
ture of the base ply and the AWAPLAN roll
sufficiently to form a bead of melted asphalt
as the AWAPLAN is rolled out.
12.1.8 Flashing: The flashing material must be
AWAPLAN surfaced d AWAPLAN,
VERSA -FLASH 160. (See
WAP 170 or
Sections 6.9 and 13.0 for more details.)

one ply of TAMKO VENT-PLY Punched Fiberglass
Base Sheet. Install the VENT-PLY by rolling out
the sheet dry over the roof membrane, sprinkle
mop to hold the sheet in place until the final
course is installed. Side laps shall be 2 in. and
end laps 4 in.
12.3.6 AWAPLAN Regular or AWAPLAN 170:
Starting at the low point of the roof, install one
ply of TAMKO AWAPLAN or AWAPLAN 170
granule surfaced sheet, side lapped 4 in., and
end lapped 6 in. The AWAPLAN or AWAPLAN
170 should be solidly adhered to the base ply
(pressed into the hot asphalt) with approxi-
mately 30 lbs. (± 15%) of specification asphalt.
12.3.7 AWAPLAN Heat Welding: Starting at the
low point of the roof, install one ply of TAMKO
welding grade AWAPLAN, side lapped 4 in.,
and end lapped 6 in. The AWAPLAN should be
solidly adhered to the base ply by heating the

General requirements are applicable as part of this
specification.
APPLICATION:
Over wood boards only, lay one ply of rosin sheath-
ing paper. Lap each sheet at least 2" and nail suffi-
ciently to hold in place.
Apply Malarkey Premium 1 SBS Base Sheet so flow
of water is over or parallel to the laps. Lap each
sheet 2" on sides and 6" on ends. Nail each sheet
9" on center through the laps and 18" on center
along line 12" distance from each edge. Turn up 2"
above cant at all vertical surfaces.
Apply Malarkey Premium 1 Ply Sheet parallel to the
base sheet and lap so water flow is over not
against laps. All end laps shall be 4" and adjacent

end laps shall be 12" apart. The full width of each
sheet shall be embedded In hot asphalt at the rate
of 25 lbs. per 100 square feet. The sheet shall be
lightly broomed as it is applied.
Apply Malarkey Premium Cap Sheet surfacing
parallel to the underlying roofing and lapped so the
flow of water is over the laps. The sheets shall be
cut into 12' lengths and allowed to flatten before
application. The underlying roofing shall be
mopped with hot asphalt at the rate of 25 lbs, per
100 square feet. Malarkey Premium Cap shall be
neatly set in place providing a 2" side lap and 4"
end laps. Adjacent end laps shall be at least 3'
apart.
Malarkey recommends the use of its SBS Polyester
Cap Sheet ventral3hing material.
