The total number of fire extinguishers required for your establishment is calculated at one extinguisher for each 3000 sq. ft. of area. The extinguisher(s) should be of the "All Purpose" (2A, 10 B:C) dry chemical type. Travel distance to any fire extinguisher must be 75' or less. (NFPA 10, 3 -1.1 and UFC 10.301b) Extinguishers shall be installed on the hangers or in the brackets supplied, mounted in cabinets, or set on shelves (NFPA 10, 1 -6.6), and shall be installed so, that the top of the extinguisher is not more than 5 ft. above the floor. There are many classifications, but they all fall into seven general cate- gories: 1) Assembly 2) Business 3) Educational 4) Hazardous 5) Institutional 6) Residential 7) Miscellaneous In all commercial buildings the Code requires that a Certificate of Occupancy be issued before the building is used or occupied. A change in the use of a building may require that a new Certificate of Occupancy be issued. Some changes may cause the building to be upgraded to comply with the requirements of the Code for that occupancy. Consequently, where the use of a structure changes, the type of occupancy may change, and a new Certificate of Occupancy may be required. NOTE: The Building Code requires the Certificate of Occupancy to be posted permanently within any new or remodeled structure.
