I have drawn a X- section of the proposed driveway and associated
double rockery. As indicated on the sketch, the original ground
fill was placed during road building operations of 57th St. The
second fill was placed in March 1987 by Ed Weyvodich. The fill
aced in March is a tan, silty clay heavily mixed with angular
roc imported from our site at Maple Tree Park. The material,
when . •acted, creates a dense subgrade. The future fill required
to achie - final grade will be the same imported material. It will
be placed i lifts and compacted to a minimum of 92X. Time, sur-
charge and the activities above will provide sufficient consoli-
dation of the earlier fills. The driveway as constructed will not
settle significantly.
In addition, the surcharge from the driveway and the upper rockery
are sufficiently displaced to have no influence on the lower
rockery.

ROCK RETAINING WALL
Description
Rock retaining wall shall be constructed where and as shown in the Plans.
Materials
The rock retaining vall shall be constructed of rock ranging in size from
400 pounds to 1600 pounds. The minimum rock weight shall increase from top
to bottom with the top three feet having a minimum weight of 400 pounds in
a cut and 800 pounds in a fill and with each succeeding three foot zone
having a minimum rock weight increase of an additional 400 pounds over the
zone above.
The rock shall be hard, sound and durable. It shall be free from
segregation, seams, cracks and other defects tending to destroy its
resistnce to weather. Rock used shall have a density of at least 155
pounds per cubic foot.
Backfill shall be crushed quarry rock of the same hardness and durability
as the retaining vall rock and shall meet the following gradation
requirements:
Passing 2 -1/2 inch 'ereen
Passing 1 -1/2 inch screen
Passing 5/8 inch screen

In areas receiving the wall, the roadway shall be excava -td, retaining a 1
1/4:1 slope in front of the wall. The rock retaining wall shall then be
excavated and constructed to the full height in short sections not to
exceed 75 feet in length.
The rock retaining wall shall be constructed one course at a time. Rock
selection and placement shall be conducted to allow rock to be at least 80
percent of the exposed face of the wall. A 6 -inch tolerance will be
allowed for the exterior slope plane and grade in the finished surface of
the wall.
Each horizontal row of rocks shall be seated and bedded by tamping backfill
rock material behind the rock to provide a stable condition for the entire
wall. In addition, each rock shall be keyed into adjacent rocks by
utilizing the natural irregular shapes of the rocks. All large voids
existing between each course of rock shall be filled by wedging smaller
rock of the same quality into the voids, leaving a maximum remaining void
of 1 ".
