A. 1:\GET RECEAVVtr, AUG 2 51987 Pursuant to your request, we are pleased to present the findings from our recent investigation of the existing roof structure at 16425 Southcenter Parkway. As you mentioned, and as discussions with building officials indicated, renovation to this existing structure has been closed until adequacy of the existing roof structure is established. This letter and the enclosed plan and details are intended for this purpose. Site visits to the structure were made on Wednesday, August 19 and Friday, August 21. At this time, existing framing conditions which were readily accessible were reviewed. Typically the hipped roof system is composed of glue - laminated beams supporting bearing walls which, in turn, support 2x12 rafters. In general, the structure appeared to be in good condition with no obvious signs of overstress or excessive deflection. An original set of structural drawings were available to review on August 19th, at which time existing member sizes appeared to be consistent with the original structural framing. However, several existing beam connections (detail references "A" and "B" on the enclosed plan) were not constructed per these documents. In addition, an existing double cantilevered 5 -1/8 x 15 glue - laminated member (shown in the roof plan as SK -1) did not appear to have adequate support at its cantilevers. 'Terranomics August 25, 1987 Page 2 Closer review of the condition at detail "B" determined that the 6x10 beams are attached to glue - laminated members with one A35 framing clip each side, as opposed to standard beam hangers. Also, an existing glue- laminated 6 -3/4" x 15" member is supported from an 8 -3/4" member with a face nailed double 2x6 ledger (detail "A "), as well as with one A35 clip each side. The expected connection at this location would be a top flange bearing beam hanger. Review of these existing roof conditions indicates that modification to these connections should be made as indicated in the enclosed details. In addition, review of existing support for the 5 -1 /8 x 15 glue - laminated member indicates that adequate support is provided at the cantilevers. (A triple stud has been located at these points.) It should be noted that the assessment of this existing roof structure was based on conditions which were readily accessible and not hidden from view. The structure has been reviewed for vertical loads only. We have not assessed the existing structure's capacity for lateral forces, either in its diaphragm capacity and nailing, chord forces, perimeter wall attachments, or related items. The total number of fire extinguishers required for your establishment is calculated at one extinguisher for each 3000 sq. ft. of area. The extinguisher(s) should be of the "All Purpose" (2A, 10 B:C) dry chemical type. Travel distance to any fire extinguisher must be 75' or less. (NFPA 10, 3 -1.1 and UFC 10.301b) Extinguishers shall be installed on the hangers or in the brackets supplied, mounted in cabinets, or set on shelves (NFPA 10, 1 -6.6), and shall be installed so that the top of the extinguisher is not more than 5 ft. above the floor. (NFPA 10, 1 -6.9) Extinguishers shall be located so as to be in plain view (if at all possible), or if not in plain view, they shall be identified with a sign stating, "Fire Extinguisher ", with an arrow pointing to the unit. (NFPA 10, 1 -6.3) 2. Exit hardware and marking must meet the requirements of Uniform Fire Code Sections 12.104 & 12.114. Exit doors shall be openable from the inside without the use of a key or any special knowledge or effort. (UFC 12.104b) 3. Exits shall be illuminated at any time the building is occupied.
