INTRODUCTION NO. PO09/013 This report presents the results of a flame spread tunnel test on a decorative laminate panel, submitted for evaluation by Ralph Wilson Plastics Company of Temple, Texas. The report contains a description of the material tested, the preparation and conditioning of the specimen, the test procedure, and finally, the test results. Note that the results only apply to the specimen tested, in the manner tested, and not to the entire production of this or similar materials, nor to this mate- rial's performance when used in canbination with other materials. All test data are on file and are available for review by authorized per- sons. The test was conducted in accordance with the provisions of ASTM Designation E84 -84, "Standard Method of Test for Surface Burning Char- acteristics of Building Materials." This test method is similar to the test method specified in NFPA No. 255, UL No. 723 and UBC No. 42 -1. ASTM E84 is a test procedure method only and does not set requirements for materials. Therefore, SwRI does not assign a classification to the material tested. Building codes, such as the Uniform Building Code, have requirements dependent on building type, occupancy, etc. The building code having jurisdiction in the location a material is to be used will determine conpliance of the test results. The purpose of the test was to evaluate performance of the test specimen in relation to that of glass-reinforced-cement board and red oak flooring under similar fire exposure. The results are expressed in terms of flame spread, fuel contribution, and smoke developed during a 10- minute exposure and are recorded as a ratio with glass-reinforced- cement board 0 and red oak flooring 100. II. DESCRIPTION OF MATERIALS On July 10, 1986, the test material was received fran the Client. PREPARATION AND CONDITIONING OF TEST SPECIMEN 2 The 21 -1n. x 25 -ft (0.53 x 7.63 -m) specimen was prepared using three nominal 21 x 96 -in. (0.53 x 2.44 -m) panels to fill 24 ft (7.32 m) of the tunnel. These were placed end -to -end in the furnace on 0.19 -in. (4,76 -mm) stainless steel rods positioned at 2 -ft (0.61 -m) intervals the entire length. A 14 x .21 -in. (0,36 x 0.53 -m) section of 16 -ga (1.6 -mm) sheet metal was placed over the burner and under the leading edge of the first section to deter flame impingement on the unexposed surface in accordance with the test procedure. No other preparation was required. The specimen was conditioned for 12 days in an atmosphere main- tained between 68 and 78 °F (20 and 26 °C) temperature and 45- to 55- percent relative humidity. IV. TEST PROCEDURE The test was conducted on July 22, 1986, with Mr. C. Wohleb present representing the Client. Reference data were obtained and fur- nace operation checked by conducting a 10-minute test with gl ass - reinforced- cement board on the day of the test and by periodic tests with red oak flooring. These tests provided the 0 and 100 references for flame spread,•fuel contribution, and smoke developed. Each specimen to be evaluated was tested in accordance with the standard procedure. V. TEST RESULTS 3 The test results were calculated on the basis of observed flame travel and the Measurement of areas under the recorder curves of furnace temperature and smoke developed (see Table 2). To allow for possible variations in results due to limitations of the test method, the numer- ical results were adjusted to the nearest figure divisible by 5. Recorded data for flame spread, fuel contribution, and smoke developed for the specimen are shown in the figures at the end of this report as a solid line on each graph. TABLE 2. GENERAL DATA: Intended Uses: WILSONART Brand SOLICOR sur- facing is intended for use on fabricated items where it is desirable for aesthetic purposes to have the exposed edges and face of the same color. The "through- color" nature of SOLICOR allows for special, high de- sign styles in fabrication, such as en- graving and large -angle bevels, since there is no brown core line (See "Composition of Product "). Basic Limitations: • WILSONART Brand SOLICOR sur- facing is designed for indoor use only. It should be protected from direct sun- light and sustained periods of heating above 275° F. Extremes in humidity will cause dimensional change (see Typical Test Values). WILSONART Brand SOLICOR sur- facing cannot be considered a struc- tural material and must be bonded to a suitable substrate for use. WILSONART SOLICOR surfacing must be handled more cautiously than conventional laminates. The nature of construction of SOLICOR surfacing Is such that It tends to be brittle. Thus, It may crack or tear If handled roughly during fabri- cation or transport. All Inside comers must be radlused to prevent stress cracking. Composition of Product: WILSONART Brand SOLICOR sur- facing is composed of layers of alpha cellulose papers which have been sat- urated with special thermosetting resins and then consolidated under heat and pressure into a sheet. After pressing, sheet is sanded on reverse side to facilitate bonding. Edges and ends are trimmed to remove unbonded papers. Specification Data Nominal sheet size shall be 48" x 120" with overage to provide ease of fabrication. Thickness shall be 0.060 ± 0.005 inches. Finishes: WILSONART Brand SOLICOR sur- facing shall be available in the same standard matte textured finish recom- mended for Color Quest'" solid colors, and designated (6) or (13) in product literature and on sample chips. Although Type 560 WILSONART Brand SOLICOR surfacing is not sp cifically covered in the NEMA Standard LD 3 -1980, physical properties of this sheet conform closely to specifica- tions listed in Part 2 of NEMA Standard LD 3 -1980, Type SP62. IC-ATION:-= SOLICOR is a specially made prod- uct and therefore must be handled in a more careful manner than conven- tional WILSONART laminates. SOLICOR and suitable substrate should be ordered in advance so steps can be taken to reduce internal mois- ture before bonding. Storage in heated rooms with moving air is recom- mended during cold months. During warm periods when humidity is high, still air is preferred. Proper adhesive choice should in- clude LOKWELD® LW10 or LW20 permanent adhesives. Nonpigmented contact adhesives can also be used successfully, but their use requires good practice. Recommended are LW801, LW851 or LW861. All men- tioned adhesives are available from local WILSONART product distribu- tion points. Temperatures of adhesives and work place must be above 65 °F, pref- erably 70° to 80 °F. Uniform spread, proper open time and maximum pres- sure (even with contact adhesive) are necessary to obtain strong bonds. Special attention needs to be given to seams and edges. Inside corners must be radiused and smooth. Perma- nent adhesives may be used to rein- force contact adhesives at these points. The SOLICOR sheet must be larger than the substrate. Overhang can be routed off after a strong bond is achieved. Normally, edges are bonded prior to surfacing; however, with SOLICOR, assembly may be either way. Beveling of edges creates a desir- able effect. (For additional informa- tion, see WILSONART product book- let entitled WILSONART® SOLICOR' Fabrication Basics.) Sharp tools are a necessity for quality work. They should be carbide tipped (saws, routers, etc.). After routing, edges may be further en- hanced by dressing with a file followed by polishing with 600 grit sandpaper and a suitable sanding block. NOTE: Product 560 Is a standard grade laminate and Is not post - formable. Mention must be made here of desirable substrates. These include A -D plywood of Douglas fir, free from surface voids (A side), along with par- ticle boards and fiberboards. Density of substrate should be at least 45 pounds per cubic foot. We recom- mend particle board or fiberboard as the most desirable substrates. Plaster- board, paper, concrete and gypsum board are not recommended sub- strates. Metal can be laminated with SOLICOR surfacing providing proper conditioning of metal surface and proper selection and use of adhesive are observed. 5. AVAILABILITY - COST: Availability: WILSONART Brand SOLICOR sur- facing is available through WILSONART decorative laminate distribution cen- ters listed on the reverse side of this sheet. MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY: WILSONART Brand SOLICOR sur- facing is manufactured to meet speci- fications listed in Part 3 hereof. PRODUCT MAINTENANCE: Maintenance of surfaces clad in WILSONART Brand SOLICOR surfac- ing shall consist primarily of cleaning with a soft, clean cloth and mild soap or detergent. Cleaners which contain grit, abrasives, or strong chemicals (such as those used to clean tile, sinks, toilets, stainless steel, ovens, etc.) must be avoided. Use of wax or furni- ture polish to brighten surfaces is really not necessary. Should it be used, the, last coat must be removed with solvent before an additional coat is applied. 8. TECHNICAL SERVICES: Each area distribution center for WILSONART brand surfacing prod- ucts has trained sales representatives.
