Inspector Lavern Peterson Tukwila Fire Department 6200 Southcenter Blvd. Tukwila, Washington 98188 Re: Eddie Bauer - Southcenter This is to confirm our telephone conversations of November 20, 1987 regarding the Eddie Bauer store at the Southcenter Mall. Our conversation primarily revolved around the requirement of fire dampers. As we understand it, the existing building is constructed of non- combustible materials as is the work currently under construction. The new materials installed above the ceiling are specified to meet the requirements of flame spread (25 or less) and smoke development rate (50 or less), which is to say the materials are non - combustible. The building is fully sprinklered with sprinklers installed also within the mixing box to the air handling unit. As we discussed, given the basic description and criteria above, the code would require fire dampers at the rated exit corridor in the back of the store and unless materials installed are combustible the code does not require fire dampers at the ducted ceiling diffusers and grilles. Fire dampers will be required at the ceiling grilles which are not ducted, which specifically are the three return air grilles. Fire dampers are not required in the wall openings between the retail space and the storage room where the air handling unit is installed. As we understand it, dampers are not required here for two reasons. The two spaces do not require an occupancy separation between them and secondly, the sprinkler heads in the storage room are located up high adjacent to the structure since this room has no ceiling. The mechanical drawings submitted for permit indicated fire dampers at the rated corridor walls only. We have instructed the contractor to install fire dampers at the non - ducted return grilles in the retail area also. We believe the above to be correct. Please contact us with questions or comments. Dear Sir: The attached set of building plans have been reviewed by The Fire Prevention Bureau and are acceptable with the following concerns: 1. Fire extinguishers require monthly and yearly inspections. They must have a tag or label securely attached that indicates the month'and year that the inspection.was performed and shall identify the company or person performing the service. (UFC 10.301a and NFPA 10, 4 -3, 4 -4 and 4 -4.3) Every six years,' dry chemical and halon type fire extinguishers shall be emptied and subjected to the applicable recharge procedures. (NFPA 10, 4- 4.1.3) Extinguishers shall be installed on the hangers or in the brackets supplied, mounted in cabinets, or set on shelves (NFPA 10, 1 -6.6), and shall be installed so that the top of the extinguisher is not more than 5 ft. above the floor. (NFPA 10, 1 -6.9) Extinguishers shall be located so as to be in plain view (if at all possible), or if not in plain view, they shall be identified with a sign stating, "Fire Extinguisher ", with an arrow pointing to the 'unit. (NFPA 10, 1 -6.3) • 2. Exit hardware and marking must meet the requirements of Uniform Fire Code Sections.12.104 & 12.114. The extinguisher(s) should be of the "All Purpose" (2A, 10 B:C) dry chemical type. Travel distance to any fire extinguisher must be 75' or less.
