VanDusen, Mayor 4/13/88 Fire Department Review Control number 88 -087 Re: D &R Sales & Service - 1041 Industry Drive Dear Sir,: The attached set of building plans have been reviewed by The Fire Prevention Bureau and are acceptable with the following concerns: 1. The total number of fire extinguishers required for your establishment is calculated at one extinguisher for each 1,500 sq. ft. of area. The extinguisher should be of the "all purpose" (2A, 20 B:C) dry chemical type. The travel distance to any extinguisher must be 75' or less. (NFPA 10,3 -1.1) (UFC 10.301) Extinguishers shall be installed on the hangers or in the brackets supplied, mounted in oabinents, or set on shelves (NFPA 10, 1 -6.6), and shall be installed so that the top of the extinguisher is not more than 5 ft. above the floor. (NFPA 10, 1 -6.6) (UFC 10.301) Extinguishers shall be located so as to be in plain view (if at all possible), or if not in plain view, they shall be identified with a sign stating, "Fire Extinguisher," with an arrow pointing to the unit. (NFPA 10, 1 -6.3) (UFC 10.301) 2. Exit doors shall be openable from the inside without the use of a key or any special knowledge or effort. (UFC 12.104b) Exit hardware and marking must meet the requirements of Uniform Fire Code Sections 12.104 & 12.114. 3. Maintain sprinkler protection for all enclosed areas. (NFPA 13, 4- 1.1.1) (UFC 10.302) *ILA City of Tukwila FIRE DEPARTMENT 444 Andover Park East Tukwila, Washington 98188 -7661 (206) 575 -4404 Gary L. VanDusen, Mayor Page number 2 All sprinkler drawings shall be prepared by companies licensed to perform this type of work. Drawings shall first be approved by the Washington Surveying & Rating Bureau, Factory Mutual Engineering or Industrial Risk Insurers, then by the Tukwila Fire Department. No sprinkler work shall commence without approved drawings. (City Ordinance #1141 & NFPA 13, 1 -9.1) (UFC 10.307) 4. This review limited to speculative tenant space only - special fire permits may be necessary depending on detailed description of intended use. A high rack storage permit must be obtained from the Fire Department. If the building is to be used for the storage of high -piled combustible material (as defined in UFC, Sec. 9.110); automatic fire - extinguishing systems, smoke- removal systems, fire protection and fire separations are required per Uniform Fire Code - Article 81. We are currently using Interlake brand storage racks to warehouse aircraft life rafts, slides, life vests and various repair parts for these items. We have 20' ceilings in our building, and our racks are 12' in height. The material we store is not hazardous. We hope the information we have provided on the permit application, . along with additional information in this letter will be sufficient for us to obtain the required permits. This design was performed for a facility located in Seismic Zone 3 following the provisions of the 1985 Uniform Building Code pertaining to storage rack structures. The floor slab thickness of 5 ", which you provided to us, was used in proportioning the rack anchorages. All calculations developed during our effort are enclosed with this letter. For identification purposes, we assigned "type" numbers to the various storage rack configurations in your warehouse. Type 1 racks are the gray painted units oriented in the east /west direction near the middle of the warehouse. There are 6 shelves in these racks and the column frames are located at 10' -3" center -to- center. The shelf beams of the type 2 racks are painted orange and the column frames are painted green. These racks are oriented in the east /west direction, and are located against the north warehouse wall and in the first 2 rows out from this wall. The column frames are spaced at 10' -3" and 14' -3" for the type 2 racks, and they contain 3 shelves spaced at 4' -0 ". The majority of your racks are in the type 2 configuration. The type 3 racks are also painted orange and green, and are located against the west warehouse wall. These racks have 5 shelves, and the column frames are spaced at 10' -3" center -to- center. Our analysis shows that each leg of the type 1 racks should be attached to the warehouse floor by one 3/8" diameter Kwik -Bolt with a minimum of 2 -1/2" embedment. Any other brand of concrete expansion anchor having the same strength as the Kwik -Bolt product is acceptable. The type 2 racks require two 1/2" diameter Kwik -Bolts with a minimum of 2 -3/4" embedment at each leg. These expansion anchors should not be spaced closer than 6 ". The type 3 racks require only one 1/2" diameter Kwik -Bolt with a minimum of 2 -3/4" embedment at each leg. You are the best source of information about your storage needs and the space you have to work with. Apply that information to the step -by -step proce- dures outlined in this Design Guide to design the pallet rack installation that works best for you. The most efficient storage facility is the one that provides the flexibility and capacity you need. The wide range of new Interack•30 components available enables you to select beams, columns, and acces- sories that give you maximum use of every cubic foot of storage. And Interack -30's ease of rearrange- ment allows you to adjust easily to new load sizes and shapes. Interlake's patented safety locking device prevents accidental disengagement of beams during opera- LU•85B LU•896 tions. Interack -30 wedging studs provide maximum rigidity by forcing beam end plates firmly against the column face and sides. All struts and beam end plates are fillet welded to ensure maximum relia- bility, strength and safety. Interack -30 racks are designed in accordance with the 1983 edition of A.I.S.I.'s "Specifications for the Design of Cold - formed Steel Structural Members." Here - literally at your fingertips - are all the ele- ments you need to design the best pallet rack instal- lation for your needs: your knowledge of those needs and the space you have to work with, and the components of the most up -to -date, versatile pallet rack available to the material handling indus- try today - Interack -30. LU -75B LU -77B LU -79B COLUMN SELECTION Interack -30 columns come in four basic sizes. You need not order more capac- ity than you need. Shelf ledges on beams are recessed to allow shelf to fit flush with top of beams, and offer ease of accessory installation. OPTIONAL SAFETY SNAP LOCK Snaps into place automatically when beam is attached to column. Unlocks easily and quickly. Shipped in proper position for use as integral part of beam. • PAT. APPL. FOR ADD ON BAY SHELF BEAMS NEW KEYHOLE DESIGN Interack -30 features a narrow, wedge- shaped keyhole* requiring minimal column metal removal. Its shape guides stud and beam smoothly into position. EASY REARRANGEMENT I nterack -30 components assemble and disassemble easily to change beam ele- vations. Studs* are tapered on all sides for smooth insertion and removal, with no projections to "hang up." Keyholes* are wedge-shaped to guide studs and beams into exact position. ©1984 Interlake, Inc. ['Interlake SAFETY LOAD LOCI( Industry accepted as the finest of all rack locking devices. Lock is an inte- gral part of the beam, not a loose part. Locks and unlocks with one hand in a second, yet keeps beam secure even under toughest jolts. Standard on all flush top beams. SLOTTED BEAM For locking in decking and cross -bars, optional: available in most beam sizes. STUD'S WEDGING ACTION Interack -30's new wedging stud* in- serts smoothly, engages the column more deeply, and employs wedging action to draw the beam end plate firmly against the new column center rib for greatest rigidity. MAXIMUM RIGIDITY AND STRENGTH Placement of reinforcing struts is computer calculated to meet individ- ual upright section requirements. All struts are inserted into and fillet weld- ed directly to the columns for greater strength and reliability. Extra deep racks and larger size uprights have heavier bracing computer calculated to carry heavier loads. UPRIGHT FRAME FEATURES There are absolutely no dead spots along full height of column, per- mitting beam placement freedom. Each column has a foot plate pre - punched for lagging to floor.
