The project is located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Andover Park West and Strander Boulevard. We performed the soils investigation for the project, the results of which are presented in our report dated October 6, 1988 and two supplemental reports dated October 24, 1988 and November 21, 1988. Detailed results of our construction monitoring services are presented in our daily field reports for the project, Nos. 1 -54. OBSERVATIONS Compacted structural fill was placed to establish the building pads for Buildings A and B followed by the placement of surcharge fill to induce consolidation of the underlying soils in advance of building construction.. Inc. We monitored the placement of the fill pads for both buildings, general fill in the parking areas and backfill in utility trenches on an intermittent basis from December 21, 1988 to November 18, 1989. The fill generally consisted of brownish gray fine to medium sand with occasional gravel. The results of in -place moisture - density tests taken both during the initial placement of the building pad fills and after removal of the surcharge fill indicate that the fill met or exceeded the requirement for compaction to at least 95 percent of the maximum dry density determined in accordance with the ASTM D -1557 test procedure. We conclude that the structural fill was placed as required by contract specifications. The footing subgrade soils were evaluated on an intermittent basis from May 31 to July 24, 1989. The footings were designed to be supported on at least two feet of compacted structural fill. The majority of this fill was placed during the initial grading of the site. However, the exterior footing locations on the west edge of Building B and the footing locations for Building A west of grid line 5 and south from grid line F were excavated after surcharging was complete. Structural fill was placed so that the footings would bear on at least two feet of compacted structural fill. The slab subgrade soils for the buildings were evaluated on or around July 19, 1989. In -place density tests taken in the bearing soils at footing locations and on the prepared slab subgrade soils indicate that the areas Geo h4, Engineers Spieker Partners January 9, 1990 Page 3 tested were compacted to at least 95 percent of the maximum dry density (ASTM D- 1557). The subgrade soils also were probed with a 1/2 -inch diameter steel rod and were observed to be dense. The parking area fill and utility trench backfill were evaluated on an intermittent basis from August 10 through November 18, 1989. The brownish gray fine to medium sand with occasional gravel used as surcharge fill was placed in the parking areas. The results of in -place density tests indicate that compaction of these areas was in accordance with contract specific- ations. CONCLUSIONS Based on our observations and testing of the earthwork accomplished for and in the vicinity of Buildings A and B, we conclude that this work was completed in substantial compliance with the plans, specifications and our recommendations. 0 Geo i Engineers Spieker.
