The access road shall be provided a 10 -foot minimum level section of roadway prior to carrying out the 20% grade and provide it in such a manner as the 2% slope is maintained between the roadway and the existing drainage course. The roadway shall be signed and chained or barricaded in such a manner as to allow access only to Seattle City Light vehicles to enter the roadway, i.e., concrete posts with locks. If in the future this road section is undermined by the change in the course of the drainage system, then a plan shall be provided immediate- ly to the Public Works Department for re -doing the adjacent drainage course, at the expense of the developer. Dear Mr. Sanderstrum March 19, 1982 • Patrick Borden 4319 So. 135th St. Seattle, Wa. 98168 • 246, 1498 ation of .power Plant & Uses in ouse , 44 79 So. 134th P1 . Tukwila - Arton - Litton Industries ( Work in Progress ) Pursuant to our discussion with you of March 15, 1982 , in which we noted the inadvisability of allowing such installation in immediate proximity to abutting property residential in character , we now have researched the health hazzard issue . The results of our study were appalling in the risks attendant upon not only the electromagnetic field to be created by the Power House ( 50 ft. from our residence) but even more emphatically in the use which this ',power ', is to be put in the warehouse ( again that 50 ft. from our residence) That n power ', is to be utilized by Litton Industries , their representative etc to infuse micro ovens etc with electromagnetic fields for cooking . Other devices produced by the electronic manufacturers i. e. Litton also utilize electrical power in this manner . Not only is it unwise to locate such activity adajacent to and abutting residential property Mr. Sanderstrum , but it is a trespass upon the entire area ( Riverton in the County ) . Those malignant emissions radiate for thousands of feet thereby encompassing ,hundreds of homes . For examples of the harm to health engendered by these ELF please note; the recent outcry in Rutherford , New Jersey when the epidemiologist for that state discovered the cancer rate in Rutherford among Children was increasing at odds of 10 million to one . A public uproar ensued t Under pressurethe National Bureau of Standar measured micro waves in the area and found them to be excessive and dangerous Exactlythe situation which will result from such concentration of radiation e.itting from the Litton project in Tukwila across the street from the strictly residential areas of KingCounty t Other parts of the country have experienced the same events , illness and public uproar which it is predicted will occur in the instant situation unless the activity is terminated . Other "alarming effects of ELF pollution include cataracts , stress , effects on the central nervous system inducing stroke , tumors , chromosome damage , not to mention the plunge in property values as the humans evacuate the contaminate homes and surrounding rental units For these reasons and others ad infinatum , it is suggested on behalf of the residents and rental property owners , that you .( the City of Tukwila ) refuse the "+ business: license" and the ', occupancy permit n necessary to the conduct of this activity . By copy of this letter we are requesting -' s; as moves on the part of other regulatory bodies .with an interest in the situation . FORM 2 The Birth of a TtlirAoLG PP INSIDE THE AIRTRON LABORATORIES, WHERE MAN SHORTCUTS NATURE BY THOUSANDS OF YEARS IN THE CREATION OF BEAUTIFUL GEMS When is a diamond not a diamond, a ruby not a ruby, and an emerald not an emerald? When they are YAGs. As lapidary hobbyists know, "YAG" is the unglamorous name for a most glamorous product. Technically synthetic Yttrium Aluminum Garnet, Yag does not try to imitate a natural substance, but is truly synthetic, yet it can fool all but the most experienced gemologist with its amazing optical properties. In recent years its tremen- dous success in the field of synthetic diamonds has seen it appear in the finest jewelry and department stores. It gained sizeable publicity when Car- tier chose it to be the material for a replica of Elizabeth Taylor Burton's famous 69.42 carat pear shape dia- mond. One of the most successful pro- ducers of YAG is Airtron Division of Litton Industries who market their product under the trade name, Dio- monair. This synthetic diamond is produced by a pulling or drawing process technically called the Czoch- ralski method and originated in 1918. A mix comprised of powders of the rare earth yttrium (the large amounts of yttrium reported in moon rocks make it an, outside possibility that a natural YAG may someday be dis- covered) and aluminum oxides are placed in a platinum crucible and heated to the point of melt, which for this combination of materials is approximately 3200 degrees F. A rod with the seed of the basic mix is then inserted into the crucible and slowly rotated and withdrawn with crystalli- The colorful evolution of the YAG (opposite page) from rough boule (bottom) through .several cuttings to fine gems. Below is one of Airtron's "growing stations" where rare yttrium is heated above 3200 degrees F. in the Croch- ralski method to produce YAGs. Right is the "growing station" with lights out to indicate the amount of energy generated during process. "YAG" Continued from page 30 zation occuring as the material cools. A typical crystal, or boule as it is called, is approximately one and a half inches in diameter and eight to ten inches long. By the addition of different impuri- ties, or dopants as coloring agents, a variety of colors are produced. With Neodymium an attractive purple stone can be seen. In this color YAGs such as those by Airtron are today vying with synthetic ruby (really synthetic pink sapphire) for first place as laser material. They have rapidly expanded the power and accuracy capabilities of existing solid state laser devices as well as afforded a threshold for a new generation of equipment designed around YAG laser rods. Perhaps the most attractive colors for YAG are near - emerald green and pure yellow. But in its clear state where it resembles diamonds is where YAG is most exciting. In comparison with diamond Airtron's commercially produced YAG, Diamonair has the following characteristics: Diamond YAG (Diamonair) Retractive Index (Brilliance) 2.40 1.84 Dispersion (Fire) .044 .028 Hardness 10.0 8.5 Obviously lacking in the area of brilliance and dispersion, Diamonair would seem to offer little chance of success as a substitute when compared with the optical properties of dia- mond, however, through careful facet - ing Airtron has found that surprising results can be obtained. Stones are cut with facet size and placement very similar to those of diamond. Every effort is made to utilize the full err 415rr -111 The rough YAG - culled a "boule ", typical crystals are 8 x 10 inches long and about (/4 inches wide. After cutting the carat weight of stones (above) is determined. Finished YAGs - waiting for shipment from the Production Control Department are truyfulc of sparkling synthetics. potential of its optical properties. Even so, with its relatively low refrac- tive index, a YAG does not appear brilliant from all angles, even with the most accurate cutting, however, the material takes a good polish. So good that its appearance has fooled trained people in the jewelry field who are familiar with the finest grade dia- monds, which are classed as Grady E on the color scale. The area where the Diamonair YAG is truly outstanding is hardness-rating 8.5 on the Moh's scale. This compares most favorably with the 10 rating of diamond. Another compound, stron- tium titanate introduced in 1953, had been widely heralded as the "true" synthetic diamond. While it has good dispersion and brilliance its hardness was only 5 -6 on the Moh's scale. This made its credibility doubtful to the buyers of jewelry who found it could be damaged by grit, sand, glass or some common household detergents and cleansers. The generally much harder YAG has nearly done away with this problem. Now being sold across the country as near or substitute diamonds, the YAG appears destined for a bright future. For the hobbyist its possi- bilities for faceting and mounting make it seem certain to have an equally great potential. tar.-9) ROCK & GEM BUILDING DEPARTMENT CITY of TUKWILA 6200 SOUTHCENTER BOULEVARD TUKWILA, WASHINGTON 98188 433 -1849 APPLICATION FOR PERMIT • A RECEIVED CITY OF TUKWILA FEB 181982 BUILDING DEPT.
