An air -tight slip joint must be used to connect to your chimney. Your dealer carries the necessary pipe and fittings to connect to the various listed factory -built chimneys. Your chimney installation MUST COMPLY WITH LOCAL BUILDING AND FIRE CODES! Be sure to fasten each stovepipe connection with at least 3 sheet metal screws'.., . OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS PAINT AND BREAK-IN PERIOD Your Country Stove is painted with THURMALOX 270 high tempeature paint that cures during the first two or three firings, You may notice a light smoking effect and an odor of curing paint when you first build a fire, This is normal and. is not a cause for alarm, Cracking a window near the stove will allow these fumes to escape. DO NOT build a large roaring fire until this curing effect is complete or you may damage the finish. Spray can touch -up should be done with only THRUMALOX brand paint,,avai1able from all authorized Country Wood Stove Dealers. Please be patient with the heat output of your stove for the first few days or.week,. The steel goes through a curing process until it is com- pletely moisture free, j 1..rr COUNTRY PERFORMER .Installation & Operating Instructions Page 4 STARTING A FIRE 1. NEVER USE FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS TO START OR REKINDLE A SOLID FUEL FIRE! 2. A small amount of crumpled paper should be placed in the fuel chamber and covered with a few kindling sticks. 3. Light paper. Larger pieces of wood can be added when kindling is burning well. 'Once fire is going, the doors can be closed and the draft may be adjusted for proper heat output. The Country Stove can be burned with the door opened, but it is More efficient with the door. closed. A spark screen must be placed over the fire door opening when it is operated with the door open or removed. After the fire is burning steadily the draft controls can be adjusted but they should not be entirely closed. It will be necessary to experiment with the, draft control setting for a while. to determine the warmth desired. A wood fire can be maintained continuously hot and burning evenly by the frequent addition of a small amount of wood, instead of rare additions 'of large amounts, ▪ DO'NOT OVERFIRE YOUR HEATER. Although the Country Stove has been designed to heat efficiently, it is meant to supplement other heating means in your home and should never be fired to a red hot condition. • Disposal of Ashes: Ashes should be placed in a metal container with a tightfitting lid,. The closed container of ashes should be placed on a noncombustible floor or on the ground, well away from all combustible • materials, pending final disposal. If'the ashes are disposed of by burial in soil or otherwise locally dispersed, they should be retained in the closed.container•'until all the cinders. have thoroughly cooled. MAINTENANCE There is little maintenance involved with the Country performer, If door hinges need lubricating, use graphite or anti -seize compound. (Never use oil!) If doors fail to latch tightly, simply strike latch rod with a hammer until proper adjustment is obtained. The ashes should be removed regularly, to minimize dangerous build -up, and the chimney kept free of creosote build -up. The above procedures should be done. once a. month, A chimney system should be cleaned and inspected at least once a year. .A little preventative maintenance is a good investment. Some paint burn -off should be expected from operation of the heater. The finish can be easily restored by the use of THURMALOX 270 Black High Temperature Paint, available frpm all authorized Country Wood Stove Dealers, OPERATING HINTS Once the stove is in use it should be checked frequently to be sure that all the pipe connections are tight. The ashes Should be removed regularly, and the chimney kept free of creosote build -up. A chimney system should be cleaned . COUNTRY PERFORMER Si . Page 5 Installation & Operation Instructions and inspected at least every six months. The best time is just before the start of the heating season. A little preventative maintenance is a good investment. Although feeding excessive amounts of fuel to the stove should be avoided, it is important to supply it with sufficient fuel to maintain a moderately hot fire. This is particularly important when burning wood as it produces a large amount of volatile substances.. A reasonable hot fire will expel in the form of vapors any creosote or volatile gases that enter the flue. A cooler, smoldering fire will allow these substances to condense in the flue, and should these ignite, an extremely hot chimney fire could result that might spread to combustible construction and cause severe damage. A smoldering fire can also be avoided by using dry, seasoned wood. ** Wood should be stored in a dry place for several months, preferably even a year, before being used for fuel. Some trees have a very large moisture content and it is necessary to thoroughly dry the wood. The drying process can be speeded up by .splitting the wood and stacking it with both ends of the stick exposed, as more drying occurs through the ends than the sides even when the wood is split. In the event that unseasoned wood must be used temporarily, it may not be poss- ible to prevent some creosote build -up. This can be burned off by operating the heater 10 - 15 minutes at least once a day, with the draft regulators open. How - ever, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO'BURN OUT HEAVY CREOSOTE ACCUMULATIONS IN THIS MANNER. This could result in the dangerous chimney fire. Heavy deposits of creosote must be removed fromtithe stove, flue pipe and chimney by scraping or brushing. A ;;professional chimney sweep can be of invaluable. assistance. Contact you stove "distributor for references to a reliable person. If a creosote fire should develop, the fire department should be 'called immed iately; and then attempts should be made to control the fire until assistance arrives. If a "runaway" fire should develop causing over - heating of the stove, the door and draft regulators should be closed immediately. The fire should die down once deprived of oxygen. After a severe chimney fire the complete chimney system and connecting pipes should be checked before using further. Since heating with a solid fuel fire is potentially hazardous, even with a well made and thoroughly tested stove like the Country, it would be wise to install strategically placed smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Ventilation is essential in using a solid fuel heater. Combustion products must be expelled from the living area, and oxygen provided for the combustion process. Modern houses are often so well insulated that it may be necessary to open a Window or install a vent to provide combustion air. Exhaust fans should be used with caution when heating with a. solid fuel stove as they can pull products of combustion from the heater into the living area.
