INC. Cascade Crest Consulting Engineers, Inc. has performed an evaluation of the existing framing supporting the mechanical equipment on the roof of Building 7 at Gateway Corporate Center in Seattle, Washington. The purpose of the evaluation was to determine whether the existing framing can support a new HVAC unit between gridlines B/C and 2/3 that weighs more than the weight of the original unit specified on the construction drawings. This letter summarizes our findings and recommendations. The existing Building 7 is a two-story concrete tilt -up structure with steel framed roof and floor framing systems. Typical roof framing utilizes 1 -1/2" metal deck supported by open web steel joists, which are in turn supported by steel joist girders. In the areas of the existing HVAC units on the roof, a concrete topping slab has been placed over the existing metal deck with an overall thickness of 4 ". Typical floor framing consists of metal deck with a concrete topping slab supported by open web steel joists, which are in turn supported by steel joist girders. Steel tube columns and the perimeter concrete tilt -up wall panels support the roof and floor framing. The ground floor consists of a concrete slab-on- grade. Based upon a brief site visit, the building was erected according to the construction documents provided to this office. The drawings were titled "Kaiser Gateway Associates — Gateway Corporate Center —Phase 3 ", by LPN Architects, dated 8/19/88. These drawings indicate that the structure was designed to support a mechanical unit weighing 8,000 pounds. As reflected in the information provided to this office, the new unit and curb will weigh approximately 9,000 pounds. The overall dimensions of the unit are approximately 26' x 8'. An evaluation of the steel beams supporting the existing HVAC unit between gridlines B/C and 2/3 indicates that the beams have adequate capacity to support the weight of the proposed new HVAC unit. Gateway Corporate Park - Building 7 Recommendations It is anticipated that the existing unit will be replaced in its entirety prior to placing the new unit. In placing the curb for the new unit on the roof, the curb in the longitudinal direction should be centered over the existing W21x57 steel wide flange beams.
