With the innovative design and advanced technology you've come to expect from Carrier, these fine units offer automatic year -round air conditioning for a wide variety of commercial buildings. The units are available in 2 configurations: downshot air delivery for rooftop, curb - mounted applications and horizontal air delivery for side -by -side duct connections. Both are available with either high or low heating capacities. The 48HD,LD downshot does not require a plenum or field- fabricated transition ductwork — items that reduce air- flow efficiency. Direct downflow results in better perform- ance because the indoor blower doesn't have to work as hard to satisfy requirements — saves energy and lowers operating costs. Designed for roof curb applications, the dedicated downshot configuration results in a compact unit that saves space and reduces installation time and cost. The 48HH,LH horizontal offers application flexibility. It can be placed on slabs, piers or unit supports; on the roof or on the ground; new work or replacement — the choice is yours. For replacement applications where existing down- turn ductwork or plenum remains intact, the 48HH,LH will fit right in. There's no expense for new roof openings, plenums, downturns or unit supports. And for new applica- tions where roof curbs or downshot supply cannot be used, the 48HH,LH is quick and easy to install. Carrier's 48 Series Weathermaker I utilizes ideal energy sources: gas for heating and electricity for cooling. These energy sources are clean, convenient, safe and readily avail- able. And these sources are used wisely. With cooling EER's -> up to 7.85 and heating steady state efficiencies up to 79%, a maximum amount of heating and cooling output results from a minimum energy input. Installation is easy. These compact, self-contained units are transported, rigged and installed at minimum expense. Rigging holes in base rails make lifting and placement smooth and easy; if the factory - installed shipping frame is left in place, spreader bars are not needed. Each unit is encased in a heavy -duty plastic wrapper that preserves appearance and cleanliness during shipping and storage (even at debris laden jobsites). Your unit is factory -fresh the day it goes on the job. 2 With a wide selection of unit configurations and heating capacities, plus a variety of options and accessories, the 48 Series Weathermaker I is the perfect choice for new construction or replacement applications. When high efficiency, application flexibility and low installation costs are required, welcome the 48 Series Weathermaker I — it will do the job. Standard features provide top -notch performance • Turbo - Tubular'" heat exchanger — The tubular cell design of the heat exchanger results in a super - efficient 4 -pass configuration. A maximum amount of heat is trans- ferred to the supply air because the hot gases make 4 passes across the supply air path. In addition, the compact Turbo - Tubular design conserves valuable space within the unit cabinet. The result is a unit that is trim and space efficient. Alumagard" heat exchanger coating — Alumagard is an extra thick aluminum coating that provides corrosion resistance and assures long life performance Intermittent pilot ignition — The pilot flame is ignited only on a call for heating. Fuel is never wasted between cycles. Indoor fan time -delay relay — During heating mode, the indoor fan relay automatically starts indoor fan after heat exchanger warms up. Prevents cold air from entering supply air when conditioned space is calling for heating. PACKAGE Economizer Manual Outdoor Air Damper Two - Position Damper Enthalpy Control Alternate Motor Roof Curb Remote Control Thermostats and Subbases Time Guard 11 Motormaster® L.P Kit 3 Redundant gas valve — Safety is assured. Both the pilot valve and main gas valve are in series within one valve body. When there's no call for heat, the main gas valve and pilot valve block passage of gas to pilot light and main burners. Modular burner section — Efficient in -shot burners and all ignition components are contained in a compact assem- bly that can be easily removed for service and inspection. Induced draft combustion — Eliminates expense and un- sightly appearance of flue stacks, and diminishes effects of winds on heating operation. The heat exchanger operates under negative pressure and if any leakage should occur, the flue gases are drawn outside and will not enter the supply air. Combustion section view port — Designed with the serviceman in mind. Located on the unit's side panel, view port allows full visibility of flame operation at a safe distance from flue gases. Aerodynamically - designed outdoor air fan orifice — Increases airflow, reduces turbulence and dampens noise level while minimizing operating costs. Dependable, high- capacity cooling power — The com- pressor is a Carrier - specified hermetic unit, developed for maximum efficiency and operating reliability. It's equipped with a crankcase heater, Signal -LOC" compressor protec- tion, low- pressure switch, high - pressure switch and internal linebreak to protect against overcurrent and overtempera- ture conditions. Weather- resistant cabinet — Designed for durability under all kinds of climatic conditions. It's Carrier Weather ArmorTM — galvanized steel, bonderized and painted for long life and good looks. Servicing is easy — All components are easily accessible and self- supporting panels can be quickly removed for maintenance. Solid -state Time Guard H circuit protects against short cycling of com- pressor; automatically prevents com- pressor from restarting for at least 5 minutes after shutdown. Field - installed accessory. Manual outdoor air damper — Can be preset to admit up to 35% outdoor air for year -round ventilation. Option and Accessory. Thermostat assembly — Precise tem- perature control for cooling and heating is provided by this attractive wall - mounted 24 -volt accessory. A thermostat subbase is available that goes hand -in -hand with Cycle-LOCTM circuitry. If a safety device trips, com- pressor shuts off and light on thermostat comes on. Reset is accomplished by following standard Cycle -LOC pro- cedures. Field- installed accessory. Economizer — To maximize energy savings, a factory - installed or field - installed economizer provides inte- grated economizer /compressor opera- tion. In contrast to straight changeover control (economizer or mechanical cooling), the integrating feature allows for a much higher changeover point, thus expanding the range in which free outside air can be used for cooling. During economizer mode the com- pressor cycles on only at high room demand to maintain top operating efficiency. A barometric relief damper, which automatically relieves excess building pressure, is built into the economizer assembly. There's no extra cost for another package. The outside air damper is fully gasketed for low leakage. This saves energy because outside air leakage into the unit is minimized when the outdoor air damper is closed The field - installed accessory package contains all economizer components in a compact slide -in module. Installation is a snap because module requires no field assembly and a Molex connector plugs into base unit within seconds. An accessory enthalpy control, which measures total heat content (temperature and humidity) of outside air, is available to replace the standard outdoor air thermostat. Two - position damper — Single -blade damper, operated by a spring return motor, admits up to 35% outside air. Outside air inlet closes when unit is shut down. Field - installed accessory. L.P. conversion kit permits unit operation with propane in areas where natural gas is not available or in short supply. Field- installed accessory. Roof curb, with insulated panels, supports unit and frames roof opening for interior ductwork. When curb is in place and ductwork connected, unit can be installed anytime, to meet your tightest schedule. Curb design meets all National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) requirements. Field- installed accessory. Motormaster® head pressure con- trol — Units are designed to operate on cooling at outdoor temperatures down to 45 F. Below 45 F, accessory Motor - master control modulates outdoor fan motor to maintain ccu condensing temperature at outdoor temperatures down to 0 °F. Field- installed accessory. Alternate indoor motor, a factory - installed option, provides extra per- formance for installations requiring higher external static pressure than that offered by the standard motor. 4 ..,,o tt..•■■•• --c • Al K '- MjNOf. l admits< • Physical data UNIT SIZE ; 48H0008 4810008 : 48}f 8 OPERATING WEIGHT (Ib) / Unit 890 /` with Economizer 950 Roof Curb 125 COMPRESSOR No. ...Type 1 .Hermetic Oil (oz) 124 REFRIGERANT (Capillary Control) R -22 Charge (Ib) _ 9 9 OUTDOOR COIL Rows 2 Fins /in. 13 9 Total Face Area (sq ft) 15 6 OUTDOOR AIR FAN Nominal Cfm 4,500 No....Diameter (in.) 1 22 Motor Hp (1075 Rpm) 1/2 INDOOR COIL Rows 3 Fins /in. 13 9 Total Face Area (sq ft) 8 2 INDOOR BLOWER Quantity...Size (in.) Fan switch set at AUTO. position. Upon a call for cooling, contact no. 1 (TC1) in thermostat closes, energizing the evaporator fan contactor (IFC), and compressor contactor (C). The compressor and the evap- orator and condenser fan motors start and run. When room thermostat is satisfied, compressor, con- denser fan motor and evaporator fan motor shut down. Heating — Power and gas on and thermostat set at HEAT and desired temperature. Fan switch set at AUTO. position. Induced draft motor is energized with a call for heat from thermostat. When induced draft motor reaches a speed of 2200 rpm the centrifugal switch closes, pilot solenoid energizes and pilot valve opens. A spark is generated and the pilot is lit. When pilot is "proven," the main gas valve opens and gas flows to main burners Main burners ignite. Automatic changeover — When system selector switch is set at SYSTEM AUTO., unit automatically changes from heating operation to cooling operation when the tempera- ture of the conditioned space rises to cooling lever setting When temperature of conditioned space falls to heating lever setting, unit automatically changes from cooling oper- ation to heating operation. Thermostat is interlocked so that cooling and heating systems cannot operate at the same time. Air circulation — With power on, thermostat set at SYSTEM OFF and FAN ON, indoor air fan operates con- tinuously for air circulation. When controls are set at SYSTEM HEAT or SYSTEM COOL and FAN ON, heating and cooling operation is provided as required, while indoor air fan motor operates continuously. Application notes Heating -to- cooling changeover — All units are auto- matic changeover from heating to cooling when automatic changeover thermostat and subbase are used. Airflow — The 48HD,LD,HH,LH units are draw -thru on cooling and blow -thru on heating. 11 Economizer operation HD,LD only Cooling mode Upon a call for cooling and outdoor ambient temperature is above the outdoor air thermostat setting, the indoor and outdoor fans and compressor energize. The economizer damper moves to vent position. Upon a first -stage call for cooling and outdoor ambient temperature is below the outdoor air thermostat setting, the indoor fan starts and economizer damper goes fully open. Compressor remains off. Upon a second -stage call for cooling, the compressor is energized and mechanical cooling is integrated with econo- mizer cooling. Mechanical cooling will be locked out when ambient temperature goes below 55 F. Economizer damper modulation occurs when the mixed air temperature goes below the mixed air thermostat setting. An Economizer Control Thermostat (ECT) is located on the evaporator coil. Its purpose is to detect an ice build -up and close the outdoor air damper. This raises the air temperature entering the evaporator coil and melts the ice. Once melted, the damper is reopened. If a field - supplied night switch is used, the outdoor air damper will close when switch is open. Heating mode Outdoor air damper stays at VENT position while evap- orator air fan is operating. If a field - supplied night switch is used, the outdoor air damper will close when switch is open. Condensate trap — Evaporator is draw -thru configura- tion. A trap (minimum 4 in. deep) must be field provided prior to start -up on cooling cycle. Maximum airflow — To minimize possibility of con- densate blow -off from evaporator, airflow thru units should not exceed 500 cfm/unit ton.
