ECI will return to the site to retest the soil after a period allowing It to dry. ECI will return as requested. In preparing our recommendations, we reviewed information provided by the client for the planned wall. This letter presents a summary of our review and design recommendations for the ecology block wall. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The subject lot contains a single-family residence situated at the north - central portion of the 24,716 - square -foot lot. An existing descending slope Is located along the north and east limits of the property. The contractor has excavated into the slope and constructed the bottom tier of a two -tier ecology block wall located near the northeast corner of the property. The bottom tier Is three blocks high with the long- direction of the base block situated perpendicular to the face of the wall. The long direction of the two top blocks are situated parallel to the face of the wall. The wall is constructed of ecology blocks, with a typical dimension of approximately 6 feet long, 2 feet wide, and 2 feet high. A 4 -inch, perforated drainpipe has been installed behind the base of the wall. The bottom tier has been backfilled using the native soil from the wall excavation. Based on our observations, the wall backfill is in a loose condition. DISCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS In our opinion, the ecology block wall can be constructed as planned. A detail showing the design of the ecology block wall is provided on the attached Plate 1. The wall should bear on competent native soil or granular structural fill. Earth Consultants, Inc. The second tier of the wall should be set back a minimum of 4 feet from the back of the first tier. The blocks may be placed against a native cut or structural fill. Our wall design does not include resistance to hydrostatic loads; therefore, drainage must be provided behind the walls. Drainage should consist of a minimum of an 18- inch -wide layer of pea gravel or washed rock. A rigid PVC perforated drainpipe should be placed behind the base of the wall. The drainpipe should be surrounded with a minimum of 1 cubic foot of washed rock per lineal foot of pipe. The structural fill placed behind or at the toe of the wall should be placed in horizontal lifts not exceeding 12 inches in loose thickness. The fill should be compacted to at least 95 percent of the maximum dry density in accordance with ASTM Test Method D -1557 (Modified Proctor). ECI should be requested to be present on site during construction of the wall to verify the proper material and methods are being used. LIMITATIONS Our recommendations have been prepared for specific application to this project only and in a manner consistent with that level of care and skill ordinarily exercised by other members of the profession currently practicing under conditions in this area for the exclusive use of Kirkland Builders Group and their representatives. RECITALS WHEREAS, Grantor owns and has applied for necessary permits to develop certain real property (the "Property") legally described in Exhibit A, which is attached and incorporated by reference. WHEREAS, a portion of the Property contains sensitive areas of potential geologic instability (potential slide areas) as depicted in Exhibit B, which is attached and incorporated by reference.
