Tukwila, WA 98168 Office: (206) 242 -7665 Fax: Same City of Tukwila Attn: Allen Johannesen, Building Inspector Subject: Recommendation to Approve "Bird Block" Connections, Vijay Prasher Residential Permit No. D06 -100, 14202 53rd Avenue S., Tukwila, WA On this date and at the request of the owner, Mr. Prasher, the above site was visited. The building is at present in a fully framed condition. The question evaluated was the nailing of the roof sheathing to the top of the "bird blocks" placed between the trusses at the exterior wall line. The angle of the blocks outward to match the angle of the truss top chords did in this case not allow edge nailing of the main sheathing in the roof area. Only the 18 inch roof overhang strip of finish plywood was nailed into the top of the blocks. Current code specifies that main roof sheathing should be nailed to the tops of the blocks. In this case, looking at the overall structure including the connection of the roof sheathing to the trusses and the fastening of the trusses to the walls with hurricane clips, it was concluded that the structure did not lose any identifiable strength by the change in sheathing connection. In general, the benefit of the required nailing by the new code is felt by this office to not provide measurable or identifiable benefit to the overall strength of a structure. The additional connection would only become useful for very small conventionally framed structures, most of which would be considered "over built" anyway. Questions relating to this matter may be directed to this office. Bruce S. MacVeigh, P.E. While the soil was noted as having a high sand content and being very dense, a conservative increase from the usual 16 inch footing width was made to a typical 24 inch width to minimize delays in the permitting process (based on "clay soils" being present). Upon actual excavation for the footings, it was found that the typical soil at all depths of footings was a very dense sandy clay and is suitable for the usual 2,000 PSF design bearing pressure. In most areas the soil approaches a density and strength of full hardpan. The soil type was uniform throughout the site. As such, a constructed footing width of 18 inches is acceptable and is still conservative based upon actual soils encountered. The above exposed foundation soil was field verified by this office on May 26, 2006. All areas of footing base were exposed and available for observation at that time. Bruce S. MacVeigh, P.E. Jill Mosqueda, P.E. The City of Tukwila Public Works Department (PW) has the following comments regarding the above permit application. Please contact me at 206.431.2449, if you have any questions. 1. Provide a pavement restoration detail for the work in 53 Av S. 2. No percolation test was provided. Yet, an infiltration system is shown on the plans. Either provide another method to handle the downspouts or provide percolation documentation that supports the trench system shown. 3. The overflow can not dispense to the right -of -way as shown. Per TMC 11.12.080 2, the unpaved street (S 142 " St) must have %2 street paving (14') and storm drainage installed. The City has a financial guarantee from the development of the house at 14128 53 Av S. for the north %Y of S 142 St. The full street paving and storm drainage should occur at the one time. Please contact me regarding your options. 4. Provide an offsite estimate that includes the frontage improvements in S 142 St. April 13, 2006 Vijay Prasher 22343 NE 101 P1 Redmond, WA 98053 RE: CORRECTION LETTER #1 Development Permit Application Number D06 -100 Prasher Residence —14202 53 Av S Dear Mr. Prasher: This letter is to inform you of corrections that must be addressed before your development permit(s) can be approved.
