AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA, WASHING-
TON, PROVIDING FOR THE POSITION OF FIRE CHIEF
AND ENUMERATING GENERAL DUTIES, SALARY, AND
OTHER REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION.
WHEREAS, the City Council has determined that the
office of Fire Chief should not be governed by the provisions
of the City's Civil Service System, and
WHEREAS, certain changes to the City's ordinances
relating to the position of Fire Chief are necessary in order
to facilitate the removal of this position from the scope of
the City's Civil Service regulations, now, therefore,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA, WASHINGTON,
DO ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Office created. There is created in the
City the office of Fire Chief.
Section 2. Duties. The duties of the office of Fire
Chief are as set forth in this chapter. The Fire Chief,
under the direction of the Mayor and /or City Administrator,
is head of the municipal Fire Department and is responsible
for planning, organizing, and directing an emergency organi-
zation specifically concerned with minimizing the loss of
life and property caused by fire. This includes the plan-
ning, direction, and coordination of personnel engaged in
fire fighting, fire inspections, training, maintenance and
repair of fire equipment, alarm systems, and station upkeep.
He /she is also required by statute to report all fires of
criminal, suspected criminal, or undetermined origin to the
State Fire Marshal
Section 3. Appointment /Removal. The Fire Chief
shall be appointed by the Mayor, subject to confirmation by a
majority vote of the City Council, and shall serve at the
pleasure of the Mayor.
Section 4. Non Civil Service Exception. The per-
son holding the position of Fire Chief on the date of passage
of this ordinance shall continue to serve subject to, and
with rights accorded by, the Civil Service ordinances of the
City.
Section 5. SalarNL. The salary for the position of
Fire Chief shall be set at the rate provided for in the an-
nual budget adopted by the City Council.
Section 6. Compliance with Applicable Laws. The
Fire Chief shall serve pursuant to the ordinances and regu-
lations of the City and any applicable State and Federal
statutes.
Section 7. Repealer. Chapter 2.24 of the Tukwila
Municipal Code and Ordinance No. 54/ are hereby repealed.
Section 8. This ordinance shall be in full force and
effect five (5) days after passage and publication as pro-
vided by law.
