Each required commercial kitchen exhaust hood and duct system required by section 610 of the International Fire Code to have a Type 1 hood shall be protected with an approved automatic fire - extinguishing system installed in accordance with this code. (IFC 610.2, IFC 904.2.1 and IFC 904.11) Automatic fire - extinguishing systems shall comply with UL 300 or other equivalent standards and shall be installed in accordance with the requirements of the listing. (NFPA 96, 10.2.3) 18: Type I hood systems shall be designed and installed to automatically activate the exhaust fan whenever cooking operations occur. The activation of the exhaust fan shall occur through an interlock with the cooking appliances, by means of heat sensors or by means of other approved methods. (IMC 507.2.1.1) 19: All new automatic fire - extinguishing systems and all modifications to existing automatic fire - extinguishing systems shall have fire department review and approval of drawings prior to installation or modification. 21: All new fire alarm systems or modifications to existing systems shall have the written approval of The Tukwila Fire Prevention Bureau. No work shall commence until a fire department permit has been obtained. (City Ordinance #2051) (IFC 104.2) 22: Portable fire extinguishers shall be provided within a 30 -foot (9144 mm) travel distance of commercial -type cooking equipment. Cooking equipment involving vegetable or animal oils and fats shall be protected by a Class K rated portable extinguisher. (IFC 904.11.5) 23: Portable fire extinguishers, not housed in cabinets, shall be installed on the hangers or brackets supplied. Hangers or brackets shall be securely anchored to the mounting surface in accordance with the manufacturer's installation instructions. Portable fire extinguishers having a gross weight not exceeding 40 pounds (18 kg) shall be installed so that its top is not more than 5 feet (1524 mm) above the floor. Hand -held portable fire extinguishers having a gross weight exceeding 40 pounds (18 kg) shall be installed so that its top is not more than 3.5 feet (1067 mm) above the floor. The clearance between the floor and the bottom of the installed hand -held extinguishers shall not be less than 4 inches (102 mm). (IFC 906.7 and IFC 906.9) 24: Fire extinguishers shall not be obstructed or obscured from view. In rooms or areas in which visual obstruction cannot be completely avoided, means shall be provided to indicate the locations of the extinguishers. (IFC 906.6) 25: Fire extinguishers require monthly and yearly inspections. They must have a tag or label securely attached that indicates the month and year that the inspection was performed and shall identify the company or person performing the service. Every six years stored pressure extinguishers shall be emptied and subjected to the applicable recharge procedures. If the required monthly and yearly inspections of the fire extinguisher(s) are not accomplished or the inspection tag is not completed, a reputable fire extinguisher service company will be required to conduct these required surveys. Per section 508 "...Makeup air shall be provided by gravity or mechanical means or both..." for this location make up air is provided via gravity through the front opening in the rotisserie from the warehouse. Make up air is provided to the warehouse from outdoors through several openings to the exterior throughout the space. Per section 702.2: Air form the same room or space. The room or space containing fuel - burning appliances shall be an unconfined space as defined in section 202. Per section 202: A space having a volume not less than 50 cubic feet per 1,000 btuh of aggregate input rating of all appliances installed in the space. Rooms communicating directly with the space in which the appliances are installed, through openings not furnished with doors, are considered a part of the unconfined space. With the rotisserie freely communicating with the warehouse area through the opening in the front of the rotisserie the entire warehouse area can be considered for the unconfined space calculation. Based on the entire warehouse volume (179,950 sift X 28' tall) 5,038,600 cubic feet, a maximum of 1,000,772,000 btuh of fuel- burning equipment could operate before it would be considered a confined space. Currently our records show 1,882,000 btuh of fuel- burning equipment (or approximately 0.2% of maximum fuel- burning equipment), therefore the space meets the criteria as unconfined and can obtain all combustion air from the indoor air. For the interlock requirement per 507.2.1.1, a normally closed solenoid valve will be added the the gas line supplying the oven that will only open when the exhaust fans are energized.
