HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-10-13 Proclamation - Domestic Violence Awareness MonthOffice of the Mayor City of Tukwila, Washington PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month; and WHEREAS, domestic violence is an intentional pattern of behavior that is used by one person as a means to harm and take power and control over another person in the context of a dating, family, roommate or caretaker relationship. Domestic violence is a serious and widespread social problem in our nation, with approximately one third of all female homicide victims being killed by an intimate partner; and WHEREAS, domestic violence is an epidemic affecting all communities, regardless of age, socioeconomic status, educational background, race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, ability, sexual orientation, or gender; and WHEREAS, 43% of the assaults occurring in Washington State in 2013 were domestic violence, and 1 in 4 women in the state will report being injured by domestic violence sometime in her lifetime and it has been estimated that every nine seconds a woman is beaten by her husband or boyfriend in this country with, in more than half those instances, children under the age of 12 are present; and WHEREAS, 35 people were murdered as a result of domestic violence in Washington State in 2013; and WHEREAS, the City of Tukwila is working to improve the overall response to and the reduction of domestic violence in our region with awareness to the cultural differences in our community while still enforcing the law; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jim Haggerton, Mayor of the City of Tukwila, in honor of the woman, children and men who are or have been victims, do hereby proclaim the month of October, 2014 to be Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the City of Tukwila, and encourage everyone in our community to take an active role in supporting all victims so they can lead healthy lives safe from violent and abusive behavior.
