Box 58502 Seattle, Washington 98138 Attention: Mr. Richard Lewis Cgto 54.1& y/B November 29, 1989 Progress Report Earthwork Monitoring and Fill Settlement Evaluation Embassy Suites Hotel Tukwila, Washington File No. 1333 - 003 -BO5 Consulting Geotechnical Engineers and Geologists At your request, this letter presents a summary of our monitoring of the earthwork activities which have been accomplished to date for the new Embassy Suites Hotel in Tukwila, Washington. These construction monitoring services have included monitoring site preparation, monitoring placement and compaction of fill under Permit 5644, and evaluation of the settlement of the fill. Site visits began on July 18, 1989 and continued on an almost daily basis through July 31, 1989, at which time filling was completed. Our observations and recommendations were summarized in daily field reports, copies of which are attached. Based on our observations and testing, it is our opinion that the filling was accomplished in general accordance with our recommendations and the project specifications. As stated in our letter dated October 30, 1989, we have evaluated the settlement of the fill, and conclude that the fill has sufficiently settled such that other phases of construction may begin. We anticipate that our firm will continue to provide construction monitoring services during the remainder of the project. Our services will include monitoring pile installation, placement and compaction of backfill or other additional earthwork required for the building, and placement and compaction of utility trench backfill. From the data we received from the recent Touma Engineers' field investigation, it appears that the 'gradient in the existing pipe(s) downstream from C.H. No. 5, result in slopes that are minimal, or in the worst case, nearly level. This lack of appreciable slope is governed by the invert of the pipe to allow discharge into the existing ditch along the BNRR. Increasing the diameter of the existing discharge pipe from 8 inch to 12 inch equivalent capacity :would not provide an appreciable increase in the capacity of the system downstream from.C.B. No. 5. because of the lack of available grade which is controlled by the flatness of the existing terrain and the invert of the existing ditch. However, any incremental increase in the capacity of the stormdrain pipe in this portion of the system would enhance the discharge capabilities of the present system.
