DEVt:LOP4. ;ENT May 3,1993 Ms. Denni Shefrin Associate Planner Dept. of Community Development 6300 Southcenter Boulevard, #100 Tukwila,WA 98188 Dear Ms. Shefrin, As we discussed last week on the telephone, there is before you now an application for a satellite dish at the Computer City Supercenter at 404 Strander Boulevard. The application drawings do not show any screening of the dish; however, I do not believe that any screening should be required for this particular piece of mechanical equipment. • Because it is set back near the middle of the roof as shown on the permit drawings and attached sketch, the dish will be hardly visible from nearby streets and adjacent properties at grade. The attached sketch shows the angle of visibility from the east and APE. This side is the worst case for visibility from grade. I used an angle equal to the recently approved Segale Retail Center, where the HVAC equipment is screened only by merit of being setback from the edge of the roof with an angle of visibility of 7 degrees. In addition, I discounted the periodic screening provided by the mature trees which extend nearly continuously around the site. • The existing roof is white and so is the proposed satellite dish.The dish will not be easily discernable against a white background when seen from the surrounding hills. • Any direct screening such as is now acceptable to the City of Tukwila would be larger, more visible, and less attractive than the rather attractive dish itself. Please review this situation considering that Computer City voluntarily provided the most attractive and complete screening to date for its HVAC equipment, because they agreed with the spirit of the I3AR requirement , but that they believe that this device is better left alone.
