FINDINGS
The Puetz Golf store is located at 402 Strander Boulevard adjacent to the Sears
Homelife store. The wall that the sign would be located on faces Strander and
is set back 140 feet from the property line.
BACKGROUND
The applicant is requesting Planning Commission approval of a sign area
increase from the 72:8 square feet that would be allowed outright by the sign . .
code to 104.8 square feet. The Planning Division has issued a permanent sign
permit for the " Puetz Golf' portion of the sign which is 58.7 square feet. The
increase in sign area that Puetz Golf is seeking would allow additional text,
"Discount Superstore," as well as a golf club graphic to become permanently
located underneath the existing sign. The new portion which is 32 square feet
in area would be designed to be compatible with the existing text and read as
one sign.
PLANNING COMMISSION DECISION CRITERIA
The Planning Commission is authorized to approve requests for sign area
increases of up‘>.to 50% for each: doubling: of the minimum required setback per
TMC 19.32.140. The maximum sign area that can be approved is limited to 6%
of the wall area on which the sign will be located or 500 s.f., whichever is Tess.
The CM zoning designation requires a front building setback of 50 feet.. The
proposed sign is located on the south wall of the building Puetz Golf will
occupy which is setback 140 feet from the property line. This is 2.8 times the
required 50 foot setback and so qualifies for the sign area increase.
The wall area fronting the space that Puetz Golf will occupy is X1760 square feet
so the maximum sign area that would be allowed based on the-6% limitation is
1'05.6 square feet.
CONCLUSIONS
The proposed sign easily meets the setback requirements for the increase in sign area
and complies with the 6% maximum limitation. There are several signs in the area of

approximately similar size including: Sears Homelife next door with a 133 square foot
sign.
RECOMMENDATION
The Planning Division recommends approval of the proposed sign area increase from
72 to, 104.8 square feet.

Dear Nora,
We are requesting approval of a 104.85 square foot wall sign exceeding the square footage allowed
from Table 1 but less than 6% of the building face (105.63 square foot), the maximum sign area
allowed by section 19.32.150.
Our request for additional square footage is based on section 19.32.140 (A) ". Upon application to
and approval by the planning commission, the permitted sign area may increase no more than fifty
percent for each doubling of the minimum setback distance for a wall upon which a particular sign is
to be placed, but in no case shall sign area exceed that permitted in section 19.32.150 ".
The proposed sign is to be located on the south evelation with an E.B.F. (exposed building face) of
1760.58 square feet which allows a maximum 72.82 square foot sign. This allowance is for a facade
meeting the minimum setback required for the zone. The applicant's facade is located 140 feet back
from Strander Boulevard in a CM zone requiring a 50 foot setback, therefore the minimum setback
has been doubled 2.8 times, allowing for the additional requested sign.
This additional sign area is to become part of the existing wall sign. The applicant has a sign on the
south elevation of 58.72 square feet rather than the allowed 72.82 square feet. This request is to add
32.03 square feet to the allowable area to include a golf club and a capsule sign describing the nature
of the business. The additional signage meets the requirements for the approval by requesting a sign
area not exceeding 6% of the facade, which is achieved by one doubling of the setback.
We feel the applicants request meets the intent of the code and is compatible with the signage in the
