These Instructions apply to the installation of SMD or SMDR series leakage
rated smoke dampers supplied with factory Installed damper actuators.
Dampers not supplied with factory mounted actuators may have actuators
field mounted. The actuators must be Installed in accordance with the
supplied Installation instructions and must conform to the size limitations
outlined in the Actuator Limitations for Field Installation sheet
Specific requirements In these Instructions are mandatory.
These instructions meet the requirements of UL 555S.
U.L. listings R13447 and R13448, California State Fire
Marshall listing 3230 - 0981:104 and New York City
BSNMEA listing 260 -91 -M apply to these dampers.
1. Smoke Damper Requirements
Smoke dampers are required to close and prevent the
passage of alr and smoke through ducts or ventilation
openings In smoke barriers; Smoke dampers are also
applied In engineered smoke control systems to
establish air pressure differentials and thereby prevent
the spread of smoke.
2. Location of Damper in Ductwork
Place the damper assembly In its proper position relative
to the barrier as shown in the figure to the right. The
plane of the closed damper blades must be within 24" of
the rated smoke barrier and before any duct Inlets or outlets.
3. Attaching Damper to the Duct
Attach the damper to the duct using 110 sheet metal screws, t/h' diameter
bolte and nuts, 1 /a" long welds or 2 /ti" diameter steel pop rivets,
Attachments must be made at each flange spaced a maximum of 6" on
centers and a maximum of 2" from comers on rectangular dampers, and a
maximum 6" on centers on round dampers.
4. Installing Multiple Damper Section Assemblies
The maximum size of multiple damper assemblies is unlimited, but is to be
made up of factory assembled sections no larger than 96" wide by 50" high.
The damper sections must be attached together with 110 sheet metal
screws, 1/4" diameter nuts and bolts, 1 /2" long welds, or a /16" diameter steel
pop rivets. Individual damper sections attached together in this manner will
form the necessary mullions needed to support the multi- section assembly.
S. Sealing the Installation
After installing the damper in the ductwork, seal the Joint between the
damper frame and the duct using GE1200 Silicone Construction Sealant or
Dow Coming WV 732 Sealant. Make sure to press the sealant Into the Joint
to guarantee a proper seal. Use the minimum amount of material required to
completely seal the joint.
11 Installation Involves multiple damper sections, joints between the damper
section frames should be sealed in the same manner.

misapplications of rated floor /coiling assembly
systems in building design and construction. The
ceiling radiation damper overcomes these prawbacks
and makes the use of ratsd.Aoor /ceiling asCembll•s
practical.

hard in the open position by a fusibts link, which melts .
at a specified temperature (usually 1116° a).' When the
link melts, the damper closes under spring power,
closing off the HVAC ceiling opening. This prevents
the spread of flame and heat to the space between
the ceiling and the floor above. Key to the qualifi-
cation of telling radiation dampers le their capability
to limit temperature rise above the ceiling membrane
to protect the structural support for the floor above.
Ceiling radiation dampers can be rated at 1, 2, 3, or
4 hours. The damper system selected should have a ;
rating at asset equal to the floor /coiling assembly •

Thermal Insulating Blanket Requirements
When the ceiling opening is largsrithan the ceiling
radiation damper, a Thermal Insulating Blanket is
required to protect that part of the coding opening
not covered by the Ceiling Reaal$on Damper. This
Insulating Blanket should be provided by the Damper
Msnufact ew to ensum its compatibility with the
damper and ensues its ability to protect the opening.
