Reappointment TUKWILA CITY COUNCIL Regular Meeting M I N U T E S c oo Tukwila City Hall Council Chambers Mayor Van Dusen called the Regular Meeting of the Tukwila City Council to order and led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. An invocation was given by Reverend Nicholas Krantz from the Foster Tukwila Presbyterian Church. MABEL J. HARRIS; JOE H. DUFFIE; EDGAR D. BAUCH; MARILYN G. STOKNES; JOAN HERNANDEZ. JAMES HANEY, City Attorney; MAXINE ANDERSON, City Clerk; DON MORRISON, City Administrator; TOM KEEFE, Acting Fire Chief. Municipal Court Judge Jerry Belur was present to administer the oath of office to the newly elected Council Members, Clarence Moriwaki and Dennis Robertson and to Gary L. Van Dusen, re- elected as Mayor. Mayor Van Dusen noted that this is the eighth Council he has been involved with. He is very optomistic that the City will move forward in the next two years. This Council makes up a broad base of the City, and they are intelligent, hardworking people. They want to do a good job. If we all work together in a cooperative manner, we will do what we need to do for the City in the next few years. COUNCILMAN BAUCH NOMINATED MABEL HARRIS FOR THE POSITION OF COUNCIL PRESIDENT. Introduction of Donald Mayor Van Dusen introduced Donald Persson who will serve as Persson, Acting Police interim Police Chief until a new Chief is selected. Don Chief Pierce has resigned to take the position of Police Chief with the City of Bellingham. Introduction of Firefighters Comments from Dennis Hidell, Chairman, Arts Commission NEW BUSINESS Resolution #1062 Expressing sincere thanks to Wendy Morgan Council Member Resolution #1063 Expressing sincere thanks to Charles Simpson, Councilman Approval of Vouchers 000 Mr. Persson thanked the Mayor and Council for this oppor- tunity. He was born and raised in the Tukwila area and is a graduate of Foster High School. He has been with the Renton Police Department for 22 years. It is an honor to serve the community that is one of the best and most progressive. Tom Keefe, acting Fire Chief, introduced Phil Lyons who has just been promoted to Lieutenant. He also introduced Chris Flores and Alan Codenys who are the newly hired firefighters. They will enter the Fire Academy on the 25th of January. Dennis Hidell introduced himself to Council as the new Chairman of the Civic Arts Commission. He said the City is fortunate to be able to afford the luxury and the benefit that an Arts Commission offers. We now have a collection of about 30 pieces of art work with an acquisition value of about $35,000. MOVED BY HARRIS, SECONDED BY DUFFIE, THAT THE PROPOSED RESOLUTION BE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY. MOTION CARRIED. TUKWILA CITY COUNCIL REGULAR MEETING January 4, 1988 Page 3 REPORTS Incinerator Sites Council Committees oco Mayor Van Dusen reported on the solid waste process. There is a proposed County Ordinance that designates four sites: Black River, Kent, Issaquah, and the SR -18 site. There is still a lot of discussion to be held on this. Council President Harris asked Council Members to submit their preference for the committee they would like to serve on. She will have the assignments ready by next Monday. Unsightly Business Council Member Hernandez reported that a citizen had complained about the unsightly area being created by Monster Auto Wrecking on Empire Way South. They are dumping junk cars down the hillside north of Tukwila. The business is located in the County but can be seen by many Tukwila citi- zens. Mayor Van Dusen offered to look into it. Grocery Store Closing Council Member Hernandez reported that some citizens are unhappy because the grocery store in the Southcenter Mall is closing. This will create a problem for some of the older people. Cable TV ADJOURNMENT 7:50 p.m. BENEDICTION Don Morrison, City Administrator, explained that citizens along 58th Avenue have, any number of times, requested that Cable TV be made available to them. The only way this can be done is to dig a trench in the street. He asked if anyone has an objection to the City issuing a street use permit to make this cut, please let him know. Council President Harris asked, on behalf of her neighbors, to allow the cable company to install cable for Interurban Avenue, So. 143rd, 144th, 144th Place, on the existing poles. Mayor Van Dusen said Administration would request this. MOVED BY DUFFIE, SECONDED BY STOKNES, THAT THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE TUKWILA CITY COUNCIL ADJOURN TO HONOR THE NEWLY ELECTED OFFICIALS WITH CAKE AND COFFEE. MOTION CARRIED.
