ARTS COMMISSION
MINUTES
May 6, 2014 5:00pm Tukwila Community Center
Call to Order: Arts Commission Chair, Trisha Gilmore called the meeting to order.
Attendance: Commissioners — Cynthia Chesak, Brian Kennedy, Trisha Gilmore, Steve Mullet
Staff — Stephanie Gardner — Parks and Recreation
Approval of Minutes: Minutes from the April 1, 2014 meeting were unanimously
approved.
Citizen Comment: Austin Hacket attended the meeting to learn more about the Arts Commission role in the
Community. He is seeking opportunities to become more involved in Tukwila.
Presentation
Alma Villegas presented a program she has developed called Azucar!, a musical experience and exploration of
culture and self- identity inspired by the Music and Life stories from Cuban Icon Celia Cruz. Ms. Villegas presented
the format of her program and discussed the benefits he program has for school aged children, youth and teens.
She would like to make connections with Tukwila School District staff and find ways to integrate programming
into the schools. She is seeking the Arts Commission input about the program and suggestions for ways to
connect with the School District. She may return to the Commission in the future to present a funding proposal.
Business Items
• Plaques: Pat Brodin was present to provide an update on the bronze historical plaques the Commission
supported in 2013. Mr. Brodin described how the plaques were installed and reported that they are
secure and would be extremely difficult for thieves to remove. He is pleased with the quality of the
plaques.
• Military Road Play Update: Cynthia Chesak provided an update regarding the Military Road play by
Foster High School Students. The Military Road is an original play about the Duwamish Valley during
1855 to 1856. It depicts the life of homesteaders at that time and the reason for the road to be built and
how the forthcoming creation of Military Road will change their lives and the growth of this area. The
script is a collaboration of Foster High School theatre students and playwright, Rachel Atkins
performances are scheduled for May 22 and 23 at 7 p.m. in the Foster Performing Arts Center. Tickets at
the door, $5 for adults and $4 for seniors and students with ASB.
• Tukwila Village Art Selection: Stephanie reminded Trisha and Brian of their upcoming commitments to
the jury process for Tukwila Village public art. They will each report back at the June meeting.
• KCLS Art Selection: Stephanie reported that the KCLS Tukwila Library artist selection meeting will be May
19, 9:30 -noon, at the Tukwila Community Center, KCLS is seeking participation from an Arts
Commissioner, Brian Kennedy offered to attend. Mr. Kennedy will report back at the June meeting.
• 18th Annual Tukwila Days Art Show: Stephanie provided an update for the May 10th art show and sought
assistance to set up the show. She invited Commissioners to attend the art show reception which would
be held on Friday, May

Other
• CASTT Update: Cynthia Chesak provided an update to this year's theme for the CASTT plays: Science
Fiction. The performances will be held on July 18th and 19th
