November 6, 2014
Present: Joan Hernandez, Crystal Sweet, Nate Robinson
Absent: Kathleen Gantz, Melissa Hart, Aaron Draganov, Thong Ung, Kathy Hougardy
Staff: Joyce Trantina
Meeting was called to order at 5:15 p.m.
OLD BUSINESS
Minutes from the October 2, 2014 Commission meeting were reviewed but not approved due
to the lack of a quorum.
NEW BUSINESS
Goals for 2015 were deferred to December since so many Commissioners were unable to
attend the November 6 meeting.
Joyce provided a review of the proposed 2015/2016 budget, which recommends the same
funding as the previous biennium budget, or $3,257 per year. The Commission discussed 2014
budget dollars which have not yet been spent and whether there were recommendations on
use of the remaining 2014 budget allocations ($3,257).
Joyce will check status of resource guide to see if there is interest in supporting translation into
other languages. Nate will also talk with folks in Parks and Recreation to see if there are
basketball teams that need sponsorship. The Commission has supported a team in the past.
Joyce will check with the School District regarding possible needs, especially in our low income
families, for warm weather clothing (coats, hats, etc.).
Nate mentioned the Storehouse — they support needy kids (World Vision is part of the project).
The Storehouse has a school section where people (students, teachers, etc.) can collect needed
school supplies. Organizations /individuals purchase a "membership" to the Storehouse, $300
per year, which then allows members to go to the warehouse and take items that are needed.
This could be a huge help to families in our area. Nate will check into this further — the
Commission may want to consider supporting a membership for one of our Tukwila non - profits,
so they can use the resource as a way to meet needs of families and kids.

Joan shared that representatives from the various community churches are looking for
volunteers to help stuff food bags on Friday's, so kids can take food home for their families.
Unfortunately, many kids eat meals at school, and then have very little to eat at home over the
weekend.
Nate shared that he hopes to lead a bi- monthly meeting with Parks and Rec. staff around
cultural competency, etc. This would be beneficial to the department, and would help keep
our cultural competency work moving forward
