HomeMy WebLinkAboutFriendsLibrary 2014-05-06 MinutesFriends of Tukwila Libraries Minutes - May 6, 2014 — Tukwila Community Center — 7:00pm Attendance: Sharon Kidd (Chair), Steve Miller (Treasurer), Marie Parrish, Gerie Ventura (Secretary/Vice Chair) Staff: Darth Nielsen, Rachel McDonald (KCLS) Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 7:06pm Treasurer's Report: Steve reported a current balance of $2,854.88 and cash. Business Items 1. Darth reported that there are 15 active members in the Tukwila Teen Library Club (TLC). He showcased recent events they've had since October 2013 that mix media, books, and arts /crafts: Hunger Games, Valentine's Day "uncelebration ", monthly book displays (2 different themes each month) in the Foster Library teen area, promoting author visits, creating posters for those events, on April 23 for World Book Night, a national program, they gave away 100 books (5 different titles) on Shakespeare's birthday. They truly represent TLC to their surrounding community and have really improved /changed teen visits to the library. 2. For the upcoming TLC read -a -thon for the Tukwila Library, their goal is to raise $5,000 for a decorative brick. They plan to do it in Fall and then in late 2014, maybe in October. 3. Darth proposed that the Friends donate $250 for club t- shirts— with $20 of that allocated as thank you gifts to the graduating Seniors of the TLC who will graduate in 2014. Marie moved that we give TLC $400.00 for them to put on their read -a -thon and we give Rachel $20 as Senior gifts for a total of $420.00. Gerie seconded and the motion passed. 4. Marie proposed that we add the $250.00 proposal for club t- shirts to the June TLAB meeting agenda. 5. Rachel shared some ongoing programs such as GameON, Teen Book Club (a high- English Language Learners club where they get advance copies of new books, Project Cool (a partnership with the University of Washington), and a free "teaser" event on June 18 — a 3 -day Summer Camp for 25 middle school students at Foster Library, which they hope to have as a showcase for the community We will be invited to attend as well as the Tukwila City Council and local legislators. 6. Sharon asked about the KCLS Director search. Darth reported that the public comment on important attributes in a director is over, the survey results are on the kcls.org website. 7. Marie will be attending the May 19 selection committee meeting for the new art that will be commissioned for the Tukwila Library area. Adjournment: Steve moved to adjourn. Marie seconded and the meeting was adjourned at 7:15pm.
