HomeMy WebLinkAboutEquityDiversity 2015-03-05 Minutesx J � s�os EQUITY AND DIVERSITY MEETING MINUTES February 5, 2015 Present: Joan Hernandez, Aaron Draganov, Nate Robinson, Kathy Hougardy, Kathleen Gantz, Crystal Sweet Absent: Melissa Hart, Thong Ung Staff: Joyce Trantina Meeting was called to order at 5:15 p.m. OLD BUSINESS Minutes from the January 4t" meeting were approved as written. Moved by Kathy Hougardy, seconded by Aaron Draganov. UNANIMOUS APPROVAL NEW BUSINESS The group talked about the Commission goals for 2015 and the desire to focus on one of the 3 program goals each quarter as follows: First Quarter— develop the work plan for the remainder of the year (target events, budget, grant process, marketing pieces). Second Quarter— Organize a book drive (target distribution end of May) Third Quarter - Participate at summer community events (Touch a Truck or Cultural Heritage Event, Children's Festival at Cascade View Park, Taste of Tukwila, Backyard Wildlife, last day of school kick off etc.) Fourth Quarter— Invite speakers from our culturally diverse communities to participate at meetings, share their stories and build relationships and learn from each other. Equity and Diversity February 5, 2015 Page 2 Commissioners were asked to come prepared at the March meeting to discuss: • Work assignments for book drive • Possible give- aways, marketing materials for summer events • Be thinking of a "catch phrase" we could use in our materials - "One Tukwila" and bring your ideas RI in(-.FT The group discussed an approach suggested by Melissa Hart regarding allocation of funds ($3,200 in 2015) that would provide for marketing materials at events, grant awards, supplies for the Commission, translation needs, etc. and still be flexible enough to address unanticipated needs. This will be discussed further at the March meeting. nTNFR Jenny McCoy provided an update on the SnackPack program. About 75 packs were sent home with students from Thorndyke, and the youth group wrote personal notes to include in the packs. She inquired as to whether or not the SnackPack program could have a collection bin at City Hall or the 6300 building. Joyce will follow up with her. She shared that King County Executive Constantine is visiting Thorndyke on February 19 to learn more about the program and meet volunteers. Joan Hernandez recommended that everyone see the movie McFarland USA — a very good family movie. The group discussed the possibility of sponsoring /hosting a movie night at Showalter. Joyce shared that Community Connectors would be interesting in attending future E/D meetings, when appropriate. REMINDER — THE JULY EQUITY AND DIVERSITY MEETING IS CANCELLED.
