While the publicalion has been on hiatus for the psi two years. Ihmugh the City's enhanced communications efforts, the Hazelnut newsletter will now be pub- lished twice a year. As a part of the Cty's adopted Strate- gic Plan, one of the identified priori. ties was creating a positive cam munily identity and image. Within this goal was the desire to enhance connec- tions among communities. In order to achieve this goat, last year we estah- hshed a Communications Division as pan of the kiayor's Office. With two, staff members redeptayed from the Inlormation Technology Department and a new manager hired. the Division is locused on using a variety of tools to keep residents and business owners apprised of civic issues and encourage dialogue with the City. As parr of these activities, the City has relaunched 05 Comcasl cable Chan. nel. Now called TukWV, Comcast sub- scribers can find it on Channel 25 and everyone else can access the City's original content via the City's websile. Currently, the City has one original (a mimed an bark page) t aoA: inside upcoming events calendar ,,2 2015 Public Works projects ..... 4 Neighborhaad Parks program 5 Tukwila Human services 7 ,..and more information! Comm unity focus: Policing our neighborhoods Increasing the Tukwila Police Department's accessibility, visibility and rr5pon- sivenessto the community has been a key focus area of The Depanmenl'cStra- tegic Plan since it was developed in 2014. Thanks to earlier initiatives and planning, law enforcemem resources have been freed up, and in 2015 the Department is expanding its reach into residential neighborhoods with fool and b0Cy(le patrols. These will Supplement regular patrols done in veholes. Foot and bicycle patrols give officers the opportunity to better connect wilh residents, hear d i redly about potential law enforcement issues. and discourage criminal activity through officers' active presence The Police Department's work to close the problem motels on Tukwila Interr1a- Conal Boulevard (TIB) has resulted in a 1256 decrease in violent crime citywide, with a 40% drop in violent crime along the TIB corridor, Residents and busi- nesses in that area report feeling safer and indicate increased comfort in being out and about. walking through the neighborhood. Another direct result of the action that closed the motels and reduced crime along TIB was a significant reduction in calls for service. which oceans freeing up more officers to he avail- able in other parts of the city. Tukwila Police officers havea long hoiory of community involvement, playing a key role in a number of charitable and civic events around the city. From sponsoring the National Night Out poster contest in Tukwila schools. to the an- nual "Shop with a Cop" program, from the ongoing Police Explorers program to the recent visit our 0-9 unit had with a local Girls ROUE Troop. the Tukwila Pahce Department believes strongly In the power of emn muddy involvement. Because of all this. the entire Department is pleased to Lake this commitment to the next level by expanding loot and bicycle patrols to additional neigh- borhoods in Tukwila. Officers welcome the opportunity to meet additional residents and business owners in their neighborhoods, talk about issues lacing specific Mocks, and hear feedback as to how the Department can continue to be a partner to promote safe and secure neighborhoods.
